The Surge 2
All in all, The Surge 2 is a great game to pick up if you're looking for a more arcade-like take on the Dark Souls formula. It's a fun and engaging game with a solid combat system and enjoyable mechanics, and it's only dragged down by a mediocre story and lackluster environments. With the excellent improvements from The Surge to The Surge 2, the franchise is well on its way to standing tall in the Soulsborne genre. It's well worth playing if you're an aficionado of this genre and don't mind dying a few times.

The core combat loop delivers a unique and very satisfying soulsborne, and the push to an open world is a win. But technical problems and a lack of enemy variety hold The Surge 2 back from greatness . [Issue#168, p.80]
The Surge 2 is a sequel done right. With fluid combat, creative level design, and solid performance you would be hard pressed to not enjoy this title.

One of the things I really liked is that they kept the pause button. It’s a small detail, but it makes a big difference and is a very welcome quality-of-life feature. Some of the boss fights were okay in terms of design — not particularly impressive, but still enjoyable at times. Overall, the combat system feels much better than in the first game. The sound design is also worth mentioning — the effects are sharp, impactful, and really help immerse you in the action. From a technical standpoint, the game runs a lot better than its predecessor. I did encounter a few crashes, but they weren’t nearly as frequent or disruptive as in the original. I also liked the option to dismantle higher-level gear in order to create lower-tier gear. It’s a bit unexpected, but it adds a nice bit of flexibility when managing your equipment. That said, the game still has its share of problems. There's far too much backtracking, and many areas are reused, which can make exploration feel repetitive. New Game Plus is very poorly balanced — enemies become damage sponges and hit incredibly hard, even when you’re equipped with top-tier gear. A lot of bosses are just reskinned versions of regular enemies, and in one case, there’s a boss that’s basically a reskin of a reskin from the first game. After playing Sekiro, the directional block system here just feels clunky and poorly implemented by comparison. Enemy variety is limited, and that really starts to drag the longer you play. The camera can also be frustrating at times — it sometimes swings around wildly, almost like you're piloting a mech in Armored Core. It’s not as bad as in the first game, but it’s still **** sidequest system is another weak point. In fact, I’d say it’s even worse than in the first game. The larger, more open areas introduce more NPCs and more quests, which sounds like a good thing, but in practice, it just makes everything harder to follow. On top of that, choosing the wrong dialogue option can cause you to fail a quest, which means you’ll have to wait until New Game Plus to try again. Considering how broken NG+ currently is, that’s not ideal.Lastly, beating bosses often doesn’t feel particularly rewarding. There’s usually very little buildup or sense of payoff, which makes those victories feel kind of empty. There are more bosses this time around compared to the first game, but many of them feel too similar to each other. The level design starts out strong but gets messier as the game goes on, though thankfully, not as chaotic as in the original.

The Surge 2 is like a juicy, metal-plated bone that gamers looking for a well-crafted yet brutal combat experience can really sink their teeth into: it will push them to their limits, hurt and punish in all the right ways, but offers that sweet, sweet payoff when you finally emerge victorious.

The Surge 2 offers more and better than seen in the first chapter, polishing certain rough edges but keeping certain errors of its predecessor. Its combat system reaches the saga to a new exponent of possibilities and its futuristic setting brings a different vision to the genre.

Perhaps most important, for the first time, I actually felt like I understood the Souls genre with The Surge 2. It’s the first one that made me actually feel anything other than annoyed and confused and that I wanted to actually stick around to see the end of. It still has issues, and I’d love to see more enemy variety, but I can safely say that I’ll be back for whatever Deck 13 has planned next.

Thanks to a compelling combat system and a deep character customization, The Surge 2 is a better game than the previous one, but fails to stay close to the giants of the genre.

While Deck13 still has some work to do, The Surge 2 is a massive step up from its predecessor in just about every respect.

It’s definitely bigger, and there’s certainly more, but there’s still a lack of polish around the edges that stops it from being definitively better.

An unfortunately hollow universe is troublesome but ultimately a low-priority concern in the grand scheme of The Surge 2’s more pressing matters. Its multiple failings are almost bewildering because of how closely it copies much of its identity from its spiritual predecessors. But those similarities to much better games just point out how little imagination The Surge 2 has and how inadequately it has attempted to implement those popular mechanics.

I played this game on PSN and I don't know why I didn't play it earlier as it has a huge jump from the first one that didn't resonate on me. The game is really good and very fun to play, the graphics are really good. I didn't expect a great game story, but man the game mechanic is really fun!

I really enjoy soulslike games but there has to be a finely judged difficulty balance otherwise it just becomes frustrating. Liked the clean interface and fluidity of the controls in this game. However if you have to look for online help just to defeat the tutorial boss then there's a problem. By the time got to warden garcia I gave up. Story wasn't interesting enough to make me want to continue.

I thought i would love this game but it was the exact opposite. The game doesn't explain much, you need to find out the hard way, constantly dying. You try to loot and get xp but then you die far from the checkpoint so you try to get it but all enemies respawn so you need to start again and when you die you lose your previous hard gained metal. There is no map so you keep running around as there are so many shortcuts so it is easy to miss some paths to go further, then you die so you need to start again. There are lots of doors and teleports that you cannot access at the beginning of the game, some guides say "write down where there are because you want to get back to them once you have to tools to open them", terrible, especially without proper map. There is a stronger person just at the beginning of the game that will keep you killing over and over as the game doesn't really tell you how to kill him. Very frustrating experience, I wanted to spend some time playing this game, i hate not finishing games, but after 5 hours i had enough and deleted the game. Haven't even seen proper boss (Little someone? is his name) that must be hell can imagine that even now.

So I got myself this game right away, because I was looking forward to the improvements that I expected from them. However, I got utterly disappointed. The game suffers from exactly the same issues as the first game. They have improved only minor things, such as there now being a character editor and adding some pointless moves for weapons, that you will never use, because there is a single best move for everything. The game itself is just really not good at all. The same bad lighting. The same poor level design. By that I don't complain about the looping, just the overall layout, playability and believability of the levels is extremely poor. The same way too easy combat. It's still possible to just jumpattack everything to death. No skill involved whatsoever. Also I can stack my stats way too easy. The same pointless limb targetting, that is more of a chore than a fun addition. I swear this system is just a poor excuse to make the player grind and artificially stretch this game with 10 hours of actual content to 20 hours. It sounds good on paper, but in reality it's just annoying. This time they also managed to poorly optimize the game. While the first one worked flawlessly for me, this one has some unexplainable stutters all the time, really making an average experience feeling even worse. Also, again, the game is super short and they are asking the same price as for other 100h+ games. That is just not acceptable. Why can't the devs set a price that actually reflects the value of their product? I don't even want to bother giving this thing detailed points, so in short: The game itself is maybe a 6, but with the technical issues and the poor price-performance it's a 4 at best. Though that is just objectively speaking, since I personally derived no fun from the game, because it was just way too easy to cheese things, even if I didn't try to, while most of the moves in the game are utterly pointless to perform. So for me the whole things was a big fat 0. The 4 is basically for people that don't play too seriously.
