A survival horror game with a thought-provoking story and scary atmosphere, SOMA suffers from gameplay that is mostly running from enemies, hiding, and getting lost going from A to B.

When it comes to horror games, I either love them or hate them. I think you can guess where this one landed.

SOMA is one of the few games that managed to surpass it's high expectations. Frictional Game's magnum opus is dramatic, emotional, contemplative, and uniquely depressing. Rarely has a game gripped me from start to finish, and left me wanting for more.

To start i just want to say that this game is weird. I keep play and drop it yet i still feel it has something to offer, i couldn't bring myself to drop and delete it. The game the story that focus on conscious and life are really interesting. The horror gameplay enhance your immersion and that is amazing despite I'm not a fan of horror that why i have a hard time playing this game. I cant really say anything bad about this game except it was exhausting just trying to sink everything in. Overall, what a trip.

cringy speaking character "oh there's blood on my face because my brain bleeds sometimes" and clunky walking sim controls. Feels like bad indie writing that wants to be profound

You know that sensation when you finish a game and you're, like, "Damn". Well, that's what happened to me when I finished this masterpiece.

This game really makes you think on what it means to be human. It's not the scariest horror I've played but it's definitely the one with the best story also the acting especially by Jared Zeus was simply amazing.

My favorite game of all time. No game makes you think about life the way that Soma does it. Absolute masterpiece

i loved amnesia so i had to try soma, needless to say, it was a brilliant experience, frictional love playing with the ideas of insanity, existential dread and isolation and it adds a very strong shell to the story. the atmosphere bleeds stress from the second youre in pathos-II and
the world you see throughout the game is very oppressing the gameplay is standard frictional stuff but more sci-fi, instead of notes you get audio logs, which to me felt a tad irritating, because theyre very frequent, yet they hold you in place to stare at the audiobank until they finish, i feel that while frictional can write a wild story they seriously need to work on their gameplay, it can get dry, boring at times.

Amazing experience, a very well made game! It's without a doubt the best game in the Amnesia series!

It’s a glorified walking simulator at its core with roughly 3 or 4 enemy encounters but the story manages to make up for a few of the shortcomings. The world building was superb, and the ending was memorable. The sound design was honestly one of the best pulled off by a video game, and this right here is a great example of just how vital good sound design is in a horror game.

An overlooked, thought-provoking horror game from the creators of Amnesia: The Dark Descent. It has an underwater setting where you solve puzzles and sneak past ominous AI robots. It'll give you an existential crisis as it makes you ponder what it means to be human. Video review of this can be seen on the Gaming Gems YouTube channel.

This game desrves nothing less than a 10/10 rating. I randomly saw the game on sale and bought it without any expectations. Quickly i realised how well the game was made. It doesnt rely on jumpscares to keep you constantly under pressure, instead it focuses on it's lonely atmosphere and great sounds that keep you on the edge of your seat. The story itself shines because of the main topic of the game - Existence.

Man, this is one of my favourite horror games. I played it on Safe Mode, and the overwhelming consensus seems to be that that's the superior way to play in order to experience the atmosphere and be able to take in the setting and details, so I concur and would recommend other players do the same. This isn't a jumpscare-y game, per se, especially with Safe Mode enabled, but it's horror in the psychological, pervading, keeps-you-up-at-night-having-an-existential-crisis way, which is my favourite flavour of horror. Even when I was at my absolute wimpiest and couldn't make myself watch five minutes of a horror movie, I loved psychological horror - plot twists, bendy narratives, eerie atmospheres, that feeling of something just under the surface being terribly, terribly wrong but not knowing what yet... SOMA has all of it and more. People rag on Simon for being unintelligent as a protagonist, but I think he's written realistically for someone whose entire arc revolves around the fact that he has brain trauma, as well as the fact that he's very clearly in deep denial about a lot of things right up until the ending of the game. I also understand why people criticise the ending for adding the post-credits sequence and say it ruins the emotions of the initial ending scene, but I wouldn't change it. The crushing, shocking despair of the first scene, only for that overwhelming relief when you find yourself on the ARK, and the brilliant way they re-incorporated the survey that they'd had you take earlier was great. I ended up with completely different answers to when I'd taken it the first time, and a huge part of that was because of that relief and gratitude I felt in comparison to being down there; I don't think it could've worked so well any other way.

Fantastic game! I really enjoyed everything about this game, specially the atmosphere and how the gameplay makes you feel. I don’t really have anything to say about it but you guys definitely should buy it or at least try to play the game, you don’t regret it.

This game will forever be in my top 10. When I first played SOMA, I went in blind. I expected a survival horror game set in the future, where you have to either destroy the great evil, or flee from it. What I got instead was multiple hours spent both retrospective and introspective: How far would humanity go to secure even the smallest remnant of our existance. How far can we push the limits of our own psyche in order to fulfill one of our most basic needs as human beings. But most importantly, how much of it really matters in the end? Whether we like it or not, one day -in the near future or not- we all run out of power.

The game has been in my library for long time never got the need to play it until i did and i regretted not playing it earlier. Its not your typical horror game that depends mainly on the monsters and jump scares, this is an immersive psychological Horror game that lets you feel unease throughout. its the perfect game for me that mixes horror with exploration, to understand the story better you have to read and look through things to get the bigger picture, the story also very intriguing and made me want to know more, voice acting was sublime, level design were nicely instructed (i do like to stare at the doors mechanism for some reason lol). They capture the horror of advanced technology and AI and how it can affect the livelihood of humans. Sure, you can argue that the concept has been tried by many before, but it is rarely as good as this one. It will leave you emotionally invested in the characters and story. This game is designed with love and care that most modern games today don't do. You can actually touch things and your not being held by the hand for the sake of progressing fast. You get to take your own time to figure out the environment and learn about its unique worldi Highly recommend it

Literally one of the best games I've ever played. Its scary but not the scariest compared to some other horror games I've played. But the story and its concept is where this game peaks. It actually makes you think about life. Really wish they made something like this again if not a sequel.

The game itself is OK on the surface, average gameplay, great ambiance.
However it will leave a memorable experience with its unique story and twists. Highly recommended.

I love Soma, mainly the history, the mystery and the feeling of the ambience. The controls could be better but it's okay for a game from 2015. It is worth it play it but you be in a Open mind mood and not expecting anything, just play.

Stunning and terrifying. This demonstrates that Frictional can absolutely play outside of its usual gothic sandboxes, with them building here a seminal dystopian nightmare with elements of cyberpunk and biopunk. The existential dilemmas offered by the story will make your head spin. The mastery of set-pieces and environments remains intact, with a particular segment in the middle of the game that remains the scariest thing I've ever done in a game. Brutal ending, too.

SOMA is one of those games that you play assuming that a game is good just because it has extremely positive reviews, but in reality it turns out not to be as great as claimed.SOMA is actually one of those generic horror games where the gameplay is not intuitive and the main character can do nothing but hide and desperately run away from enemies. As interesting as the story and the philosophy behind it are, the gameplay ruins it. The only way a game like this can scare the player is if the locations are pitch black and accompanied by loud tension sounds. Then be prepared to be bombarded with enough jump scare to make you vomit. I don't find this stuff scary, it's just very annoying and cheap stuff that is used in every **** don't need to play this game for 10 hours, walking around, getting lost and wasting your time. You can learn its story by watching the less than an hour long videos that play the game for you and then summarize its story.

Excellent plot and incredible atmosphere, as for the minuses, it’s a simple gameplay where you just walk, the levels are too dark, even your eyes start to hurt.

The atmosphere in this world is **** has a good variety between stress and exploration sections. The story is well thought out and very exciting. It really gets under your skin and has philosophical **** puzzles are rather easy to solve, but not boring. I was annoyed 1-2 times because it wasn't clear how to insert an item or it was very fiddly. The game runs wonderfully smoothly and the graphics are beautiful. I only had a bug once. The game has certain parallels to Bioshock and Amnesia, but fortunately it only seems inspired, not copied.

I first played this game in 2024, nearly 10 years after its release. I can safely say that this game is a masterpiece and is easily in my top 5-10 games (I have been playing games since 1984). I am not even a fan of horror games and tend to avoid them as they creep me out too much (e.g. Resident Evil VII). However, the story kept me drawn in. Some players criticise the water sections, but for me those are needed for pacing reasons to give breaks and contrast to the tense moments. My enjoyment of the game was improved by using the frame-generation feature of Lossless scaling so I could experience this at "almost" 120 fps.

I'm not a huge fan of survival horror games, but this one really stuck with me. While the stealth action is nothing to write home about, you are here for the story. It has one of the best stories I've seen in one of these style of games.

Great writing comes seldom in games. SOMA does a terrific job at delivering a thought-provoking, engaging and entertaining narrative that leaves you questioning what it means to be human, what it means to be alive, the nature of sentience, our relationship to morality and our definition of reality. It's an eerie yet beautiful video game. Kudos to the Frictional Games team!

A really good and amazing story with gameplay that is a bit tedious because the enemies just feel like kind of a hint to get to the plot. The thing I like most about the game are the themes and the story and their horrible thinking you can do about the plot and what you do. I saw every living copy as if was a living being which was really sad because it meant I have to kill them to put them out of their misery that will so they don't have to live on the bottom of the ocean forever at least at some time. But they were scary they worse really scary the enemies at least for me which is weird because I didn't think they were at the Beginning but that was because I played it when it was light outside the moment it was dark and I played it. I got really scared so maybe it said some more things about me that I only get scared when it's dark completely. It's a game that's going to stick in my mind because of the themes and the story and thinking about what I would do in this horrible situation that the main characters in.

SOMA Dignities:
1. The plot of the game is made very well and thoughtfully.
2. The locations and their atmosphere, everything is transmitted very well, sometimes it was scary.

I don't understand where all the praise that surrounds this game is coming from, gameplay is just your formulaic run from monster amnesia standard affair, and the story was mostly predictable. I really never want to think or see anything about this game ever again, I can't believe what mediocre Calvary this experience was, I genuinely can't see what the fuss was all about.

This game is nothing short of perfection. In as few words as possible I'm going to just say that it's a very claustrophobic, mysterious thriller with an ending so good that you have to re-evaluate your entire self.

Nigdy więcej i kibicuje twórcom.

Frictional Games can make games, Amnesia, Penumbra are really great titles, and now Soma, great job. The plot is very interesting and thanks to it the game is really addictive, and the ending makes you think about every choice you made during the game. The graphics are very good for me, but I never have any high requirements in this respect. The sound as well, ambient noises or the monstrous screams of a creature called Proxy are very well realized. The gameplay is simple, however, this game cannot be called a walking simulator, we solve a lot of puzzles here or hide from opponents, it is not the most mechanically complex horror game, but it does not interfere with the fun. I recommend checking it out to every horror lover, he shouldn't be disappointed. 9/10

SOMA took a while to grow on me, but when it did... holy **** A truly brain-bending concept executed in a brilliant manner. What irritated me initially were the significant resemblances to other classic games, such as Dead Space and BioShock, but eventually SOMA found its own character and became a deeply immersive experience. In many ways the exploration of the underwater base (and open seafloor) was very realistic, and always immersed in a thick and tense atmosphere, created by the world and character design, music, sound, and charismatic and convincing voice acting. It could be better visually (which I guess is down to the relatively small team behind it), but that didn't prevent it from providing some of the most intense and profound moments I've ever experienced in a game. A definite must-play.
