There is so much to love about Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma, from its improvements to farming to its lovable cast and how its story calls back to previous Rune Factory plot elements. The game clearly loves its heritage just as much as it loves Japan, so it’s easy to love it back. Guardians of Azuma is by far the greatest Rune Factory game yet, thanks to its forward strides in farming and player expression. And while there are still some minor limitations to overcome, Rune Factory 6 has some massive shoes to fill. The best simulation games keep you coming back to maintain your personalized worlds, and Guardians of Azuma does just that, with flying colors of all the seasons.

I am sure I have not mentioned everything this huge game offers. But Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma is a great game that I wholeheartedly recommend. It’s got the many-games-in-one content extravaganza that previous Rune Factory games have had. But unlike Rune Factory 5, this time it really works together and meshes into an addictive and immersive experience. I’m no series expert, but I played dozens of hours of this. And I feel like I barely started. If you’re looking for an action RPG where you can play music, fight monsters, grow turnips, and get married, Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma is the game for you.

Great game, completed it 100%. It is like a mix between Genshin Impact and a very decaf Rune Factory. It is great if you want to start understanding the genre.

Honestly there isn't anything I can complain about other than not being able to date one of the NPCs. First visit to the series but the adventuring is really fun, the dating SIM and range of characters is really good, and the farming is viscerally **** setting is absolutely stunning, art style and graphics and beautiful, character designs are stunning and the story is enjoyable. Couldn't have wished for a better day 1 switch 2 game and it's probably my most memorable game this year.

Having previewed it earlier this year, I was delighted to see Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma deliver on its promise of being an approachable, varied adventure that expedites some of the slower, more mundane trappings of the farming game genre. It deftly blends multiple systems without overcomplicating them, and provides ample freedom for players to explore its world at their own pace. The farming and construction mechanics are designed for expedience and ease of use, exchanging realism for simplicity, a real bargain given the satisfying main story and likeable characters. Even the helper/partner Woolby ended up growing on me by the time I had rolled credits. Guardians of Azuma may do as much to spoil farming games as invite players to earlier Rune Factory entries, but it’s a worthwhile dance that marches to the beat of its own, confident drum, and I’m hopeful we’ll see more like it.

Whether you decide to invest in Guardians of Azuma will ultimately come down to what you’re looking for in your life sim games. If you just want a breezy and casual farming/romance experience and you’re not bothered by mediocre environments and combat, then this will serve your purposes just fine.

Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma is a fantastic addition to the series and the genre as a whole. It’s got plenty to enjoy for farming game fans, life sim fans, and RPG fans, a lovely cast of characters, and mostly solid presentation that makes it a delight to play. There are a few shortcomings here and there, but it’s hard not to recommend it to just about anyone looking for a nice, laid-back experience with lots of charm.

WellPlayed
Despite the game’s issues, many of which I haven’t the space to detail, I could not help but keep playing. Although it feels like Guardians of Azuma would have benefited from a bit more development time, there was enough satisfaction and enjoyment in the steady cadence of explore-build-socialise-rinse-repeat that I simply didn’t want it to end. In good news for anyone sharing these sentiments, to a certain extent it doesn’t end; you can continue to explore, expand your villages, and develop your relationships in the post-game. The main gameplay components fit together like jigsaw pieces, and, if you can look past the issues, on the whole it’s a bit of an unpolished gem – multifaceted, perhaps a little scratched up, but ultimately with some value under those surface imperfections.

Simply put, Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma did not live up to my expectations. However, I don’t regret my playthrough. As tedious as it was, it was still nice to be back in the land of Woolys and Earthmates as everyone’s favorite amnesiac, even if just for the nostalgia. The truth of it is, you’ll probably have more to do in this game than you’ve had in any previous Rune Factory title. But that comes with the understanding that the journey may not be as fun, and the scripted moments not as emotional. For die-hard fans like me, that can come with disappointment. But for more casual enjoyers of the genre, you will find all your farming sim staples in this title. It truly gives you the opportunity to build the world as you see fit. In fact, you have 120 hours of content to get your villages just right. And because I want to end on an optimistic note, I do feel like with the right fine-tuning, some of the foundations laid out in this game could serve as a great jump point for expanding the future of Rune Factory in a very promising direction. I just hope that future doesn’t take as long as this game did to arrive.

I am unbelievably impressed by how good this game is. It wasn't on my radar and honestly i didn't know it was part of the Rune Factor series as I thought they'd name it RF6 or something, also the complete change in art direction - i thought this might have been a title from before 2023. Little did I know this would be one of my fav games of all time. Of all the rune factors - it feels like this is the magnum opus. I'm SO HAPPY they have amazing VA work and direction - i think RF5 the biggest issue was how little life and telegraphed movement was of npc's. But now it feels really good, and there's actual direction in the game. Much needed. I REALLY like the character FMC design - and VA - phenomenal. Also the combat feels a lot better than prior RF's. And the camera angles during conversations feel good as well.

I played the Switch 1 version on a Switch 1 console so it makes a for good comparison. 1. This game tries to be 3 kinds of RPGs, Action-RPG, Farming-RPG and Townbuilder-RPG. It makes it work alright but comes with a lot of limitations and simplification of mechanics you otherwise expect from these games. In most cases it's welcomed but what I don't like is that while you can have random villagers do the planting and watering of crops, you have no say about what and how much gets used from your inventory which can screw your plans over. I ended up doing all the farming myself while the villagers do other jobs until I had most seeds on max level and it cost A LOT of extra time probably not meant to. The farming part also comes with less crops to grow than you'd hope for. 2. Limitations for the Action RPG part also means much smaller variety of monsters and dungeons be less plentiful and not very deep. There are a few very cool themes for the dungeons though, that haven't been used as much in the many other RPGs I played in my life and very on-theme for the games feudal Japan inspired world 3. The town building section while telling you exactly how many more buildings and decorations you can place, will never provide you with enough space to even get all the missions done, without at the very least finishing some then tearing apart your town to focus on meeting the next objective. Maybe there is an optimal build to get it at once but then again, you have to find the recipes first and some only unlock after town growing milestones. It would have been a welcomed price for post-game at least to have one giant area you can freely build your town in. 4. There where a lot of quality of life improvements in resource gathering, party organization and forging and I really like them. However, in the late and post-game crafting and upgrading equipment is WAY TOO EXPENSIVE with the limited ways you have to get actual money. Since your fields share the same base as town buildings it restricts you a lot because you really need tons of Gold Crops to sell to get enough currency to pay for incremental upgrades. At least at this point, there is not much left of them game and you don't need to be at the absolute top in equipment, at least on normal difficulty. It still annoys that you have to grow 2 in-game weeks worth of Gold Crops to get enough money for 2 or 3 levels on 1 piece of equipment if you don't demolish most of your town to have planting space (I had about 200 tiles of field to grow crops reserved through all the towns). 5. Graphically it wasn't improved much since RF5. The environment looks more 3D-ish and now you can go more freely through areas with different elevations but the world feels much smaller and all the textures look more swampy? murky? blurry? pixely? Not sure how to best describe it. Character models also look like they barely have any details and are more apparently 2D skins on polygonal models. 6. One of the biggest issues with RF5 was the excessive loading times, especially when leaving and entering buildings. The solution here, you don't have building insides anymore and the area loading times are still there but not as annoyingly long. On the contrary, most buildings are half open rooms or rather boxes with a few decorations inside now but completely rendered into the world. 7. Often however, models and textures or maybe layer, can't say for sure since I don't code and know the terms aren't loaded in quick enough after the player can walk through the area and there is a lot of pop-up. I even had a case where a person was loaded with the wrong vertical positioning and while the mini-map shows their location, they are moving below ground so you can't interact. It did seem to be patched out eventually or at least I didn't encounter that bug anymore. 8. Overall, it's a pretty good spin-off? Side-game? For Rune Factory and people who enjoy it will still enjoy it and be very happy with all the sense making improvements in organizing things but it's still a watered down farming experience if that's important to you. I don't think though it will draw in much new blood but fans will be satisfied.

Not nearly as good at 2-4 but way better then 5. Tho I dislike the favoring of combat over farm and live sim mechanics. you have to beat the long story to date most of the characters and you can’t farm other crops until you unlocked other villages. Plus the villager chief system encourages you to automate the farming. The harvest moon elements of this “fantasy harvest moon” has become an after thought.

I purchased this game for 49.94$ for Switch at Walmart.I grew up playing the Rune Factory series: Rune Factory 1,2,3,4. I wished I did more research before buying this game, but my nostalgia kicked in, and I purchased the game without a second thought.I'm about 1.5 hours into the game, and I absolutely hate this game. They've removed the farming simulation, there's way too much dialogue, and the game is very linear. This game is just a bootleg version of Genshin Impact but not as good. The game play mechanics are your standard hack-and- slash, plus you get to debazzle trees with your dancing. I'll give the game a few more hours to see if I warm up to it but I've already started to skip the cut scenes because the dialogues are from generic characters with lack luster voice acting. (Except for the main female lead, she's quite good).Users' reviews overall seem to like the game, but if you loved the self exploratory and farming sim aspects of the past Rune Factory games. This game is your standard open world game with only the iconic Rune Factory inventory names and mechanics sprinkled around the world. TLDR: I hate this game.
