Nier: Replicant is a game for true fans of action JRPGs. For those who have the patience to overcome the slow start and generic environments. And who are willing to play the game several times to fully understand what it was about. They will definitely be rewarded.

As a remake, NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139... is a bit disappointing, because in terms of graphics it only reached the level of NieR Automata, which means it doesn’t look great. The content, however, is still brilliant. It’s an amazing adventure you must experience. [06/2021, p.36]
If anything, the amazing story of the original Nier has only become more valuable today than it already was back in the day. While many elements have received a significant update, some remain the same, but the story more than makes up for it.

Intro: I played Automata and enjoyed that game a lot. I decided to play through Replicant because I thought it would provide me with more lore/backstory, and because I liked the soundtrack and character designs to be honest. What I liked: Well, the music, obviously. And most players do, and many people are introduced to the game via this path. Snow in summer, Radiant winds, The incomplete stone, Cold Steel Coffin (belongs in a dark souls game lmao), City of commerce, Song of the Ancients, The Ultimate Weapon, Kaine/Salvation, Lost Forest, and Emil's Sacrifice are my top 10 songs. The combat was simple but fun thanks to the variety of weapons and the different moves they enabled, and the parrying system. I thought that the best thing the game did story-wise was give a good sense of the passing of time. Shades evolve, characters change physical forms, time skips happen, childhoods are explored, characters are frozen in time or cannot age properly, etc. etc. And Kainé was unique and lowkey inspirational, and Emil was wholesome and you cant help but pity/feel sympathy for the lad - and Yonah who has a disease like the whole game. But then what Yoko Taro does with those characters... I do not like much (see below in the 'What I did not like' section). What could have been improved: Tutorial system. Also, not sure I understood the concept behind what words did to weapons and why. finding outfits would have been cool. Fast travel or boar riding earlier. What I did not like: the fact that it was never explained what was happening at the start of the game, who Devola and Popola really are, why Emil's mansion was so weird, and why we can hear gestalts after ending A but you couldn't before. Where are any of the real humans actually? How old are all of our characters?? Why isn't Kainé a human since she is possessed by a gestalt? I don't understand why Weiss leaves at the end so abruptly and while saying so little - and what his purpose in the story even was... Same with the redhead twins, they say so little. They just laugh, explain they must fight, and then... fight... Why does a massive flower appear at the end of the game? I'm just critical of a lot of story delivery decisions and I'm confused on many things, even though the story's ideas and what I thinkkk it was trying to tell seemed interesting and fine to me. And lot of blank screens with text to read. Reading isnt an issue, and I thought the forest of myth village dreams being told through text was cool and understandable, but telling the backstory of Kainé this way? Either lazy or they didn't have the resources to animate those childhood scenes... which was disappointing since she is a major character. Finally, the wolves were really annoying to fight. The way they run around in circles and flee away from you was painful to go through. Especially in a blinding storm. Especially when there is an endless stream of them spawning and being sent to you. Conclusion: In the end, while it is a frankly good game which kept me entertained for about 24 hours, I think automata was better, and Nier Replicant simply has too much missing content - yes, it's ridiculous to ask people to buy official lore books or read reddit posts for a few hours to get the full picture. I wish the game was longer, had more interesting and useful side quests, and had more cutscenes and lore to read/find. Combat was fine for me. Music carried the game. Lowkey the best part, and dare I say the rest of the game does not reach the height of the soundtrack. Keiichi Okabe and Emi Evans r the reason this is in the high 70s. I give Nier: Replicant 78/100.

NieR Replicant ver. 1.22474487139… is a pitch perfect update to one of the greatest stories ever told in the medium. Combat feels fast and fluid, much like players’ tears once they finish the game. The new content feels natural, magic is more useful than ever, and the reprised music and voice over bring the world to life.

A complete upgrade from the original. The story, characters, and sound track are phenomenal. The game makes you actually care about the main characters and gives them a lot of depth. The gameplay is pretty good for a remaster of an older game that had clunky controls. Replaying the game 4 times to get the full experience is a bit tedious but it wasn't that bad. Very underrated in my opinion

How far would you go for your sibling? Nier Replicant is a story of sibling love, loss, and revenge. Our protagonist stumbles upon a lost tome who could hold the secrets to saving his younger sister Yonah from a life threatening illness called The Black Scrawl. Throughout your journey you’ll come across many different faces. Soon you learn not all is what it seems. This game isn’t just visually stunning but it hits on an emotional level. Showcasing what it means to be human let alone family. This game was a masterpiece in my eyes. From all the different perspectives. The gameplay style shifts. Its ost is gorgeous but that’s not a surprise for Nier games. It’s difficult to put into words what I felt. When it ended I felt myself tearing up whilst merely sitting in my chair. I couldn’t speak. Not a single word. My overall for this game is a 10/10 not a single complaint. Keep in mind I’m no game journalist. So maybe you won’t agree with my takes and that’s alright with me.

NieR Replicant is a game I won’t be forgetting anytime soon. Its story is fantastically dark, incredibly unique and told in such a fascinating way, while its mix of combat and exploration has just the right hints of Zelda that make it a hell of a lot of fun to play through. It has some repetition issues and shows its true age in some areas, but it’s a game I’d recommend to the first-time NieR players like myself as well as the Automata die-hards. I guess it’s time for me to finish that game after all.

Despite some dated shortcomings, this “version upgrade” is more than the sum of its parts. Novel design choices like camera and genre shifts are as impressive today as they were more than 10 years ago. Main characters are dynamic with their own interesting backstories, and the plot is as deliciously devastating as you’d expect. Nier Replicant might not convert players that were turned off by the original or Automata, but there are more than enough quality-of-life updates and story-centric nuances to keep longtime fans and new initiates coming back for subsequent playthroughs.

Nier Replicant 1.22474487139… gives the cult game a second chance. Technical improvements make the experience much better than the original without changing its essence, and new content nurtures Yoko Taro universe, although it didn't age well.

While not perfect, NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… manages to address the biggest flaw from the original game, which is its gameplay. After being fine-tuned and modeled after NieR: Automata’s combat, NieR Replicant feels absolutely fantastic to play. Fans of the original will also appreciate the new perspective that the teenage protagonist brings to the table. This game is the perfect entry point for newcomers and the definitive way for veterans to relive a truly iconic game.

Taro’s approach is of a restless rarity; he swaps genres as though trying to scratch an itch.

Nier: Replicant is a game that's hard to hate despite itself. Every time it feels like you're getting invested, there will be some annoyance that pulls you right out of the experience. While vastly improved over its PS3 original, combat in this remake is still serviceable at best. Meanwhile, boring fetch quests, frustrating busywork, and repetitive design choices mar an otherwise strong narrative concept. Thankfully, Replicant's sequel, Nier: Automata, is a vastly improved experience, making good on Replicant's potential, and minimizing the original game's flaws. However, because Automata is so improved, it is difficult to recommend Replicant to anyone beyond morbid curiosity. Still, if you're invested enough in the franchise and its lore, there is enough within Nier's main story to warrant seeking this game out, and players who invest enough to see Nier: Replicant to its true conclusion will be greatly rewarded. For all else, just play Nier: Automata instead.

Adored Nier Automata. Completed it to ending E twice, on Playstation and Switch, and have it installed on PC for a third playthrough one day when the mood strikes. Nier Replicant however..these are my main gripes after giving up on it at 17hrs of playtime: 1.Tedious, laborious and unnecessary side-fetch quests. I do not want to look up a website to decide which sidequests to do. This "game" already feels like a chore and I don't wanna add on to that in real life. 2. Slow story that was bizarre and didn't hold my interest unlike Automata. I just couldn't gel with any of the characters and NPCs. 3. Combat too easy and annoying enemies that make backtracking around the bland world so tedious. 4. What made me rage quit was the visual novel sections in the Forest of Myth. If I wanna read a book, I'll read a book. Absolutely poor, cheap pretentious game design. I had to switch my mind from mindlessly travelling around the world, button mashing through hordes of incessant shades to reading a wall of text, the consequence of skipping through said wall is a series of questions which if you answer wrongly, you gotta go back to the start of the text. Forcing you to read through this time. Dropped the game immediately. Yoko, RESPECT OUR TIME. What I really liked was the music which was similar but not as memorable as Automata's. Song of the Ancients was great. What a huge disappointment this was for me. I watched a 9hr playthrough on Youtube of Drakengard to gear up for Replicant. I was so excited to see what happened to the world of Automata but was completely turned off by everything this had to offer. Made me dread switching my PS5 on. Just gonna watch a Youtube playthrough of Replicant to bridge the gap to Automata. No way am I playing through 5 times just to get the true ending E if my first playthrough attempt was torturous. Bottomline for newcomers, absolutely play Nier Automata and enjoy that game as is, a generational experience that is completely unique. Replicant is too encumbered with old game designs that do not respect our time in today's fast pace world.

Lacking a PS5 patch / version. Graphics, combat is very outdated. World is empty. Platinum experience is not even fun. A lot of grind and repetitive tasks. Would be better to release it 10 years ago.
