Not even an actual game more than it is a series of cut scenes. Even the parts of the game where I should control the characters, like barreling down the street in a shopping cart is a cut scene. This game was also criminally short. The only reason we see positive reviews from the 'actual critics' is because they were paid to do so as the game creator's daddy is one of the richest people in America.

A ideia não é mesmo jogar, é viver, e tiver uma experiência incrível. Deu vontade de viver aquela época.

if you call this a "game" you need to have your head checked. you can beat this film while being in the other room minding your own business

Nostalgia-drenched angst but not enough meat in the gameplay for me to justify a higher rating.

One of the best "artsy" video games out there. I'm not a huge fan of mid 90's nostalgia, but I recognise the appeal. The "gameplay" part is lacking, but it excels in all other areas. The characters are fun, they keep it tight, and while the story isn't all that, it delivers the slice of life point well. The stand outs are the music and the art style, as well as the amazing voice over work. It's a very short game, so you might not feel like you get all the bang for your bucks, but as far as the game alone goes, it's very sweet.

No gameplay. This is the slopp you get when daddy gives you unlimited money to build a game. Forgettable in every way except for its mediocrity

This is a "game" that's not a game. Think of it as a series of little minigames (skipping rocks across a bond, skateboarding down a road, pretending to control your character as they float through a forest, etc.) interspersed with hours of the most pretentious dialog you will _ever_ hear as adult children in Australia write what they think middle America sounded like in the 80s and 90s based on what they saw in movies like "ET" and "Stand By Me", and with a healthy dose of their own political modernism blended in to reinforce the message. It's not fun, it's not clever, it's not original. It does have a very expensive soundtrack, as it was bankrolled by Megan Ellison, daughter of Oracle centibillionaire Larry Ellison. There's not much content here either — overall play time is 2 to 4 hours, although by the end of that you'll be thankful it's not any longer. Perhaps the most disturbing part of this debacle are the critic review scores which glaze the "game" undeservedly to a suspicious extent. Perhaps the most outrageous example is the perfect 10/10 assigned by IGN. No one who has _ever_ picked up a video game before could ever mistake this for a 5 or more out of 10. Whether it's a 1, 2, 3, or 4 is debatable, but it's objectively not a 5, and is galaxies away from a 10. So how did IGN get to a 10? Well, your guess is as good as mine, but a significant factor is that the game aligns the political priors and social objectives that game "journalists" push. However, that alone doesn't seem to explain it, and we shouldn't rule out some other kind of "sponsorship" for the reviewers in question. It's impossible to imagine any other way this blemish on human thought could get anywhere near a 10 otherwise. Even discounted 80 or 90%, this would still be a "do not buy". Don't waste your time.

A little gem that tells a simple yet moving coming-of-age story. The gameplay is light and minimalist, yet still manages to surprise. The audio and soundtrack are magnificent.

Magnífico, épico, melancólico y música brillante. Recuerdos y adolescencia en un mismo juego

Mixtape clearly wants to be a sensitive, nostalgic, and generational story about adolescence, growing up, and the emotional power of music. On paper, the concept had real potential. In practice, however, the result feels more like an overconfident interactive music video than an actual video **** one undeniable strength is its soundtrack. The music selection is strong, memorable, and often well integrated into the gameplay. Some sequences understand how to combine music, visuals, and movement in a way that creates a clear artistic identity. At this level, Mixtape does have something. You can feel that the game wants to build its emotion around songs, memories, and teenage melancholy. Unfortunately, that is almost the only element that truly **** a game, Mixtape is extremely weak. The mechanics are poor, the interactivity is minimal, and several sequences feel like they are simulating gameplay rather than actually offering it. The issue becomes obvious when the game pretends the player has to dodge obstacles, choose a direction, or control a path, while the real impact of those actions seems almost nonexistent. When a level can continue, or even be completed, with little to no meaningful input from the player, it becomes very difficult to call the gameplay satisfying. This is where the game fails the hardest: it confuses presentation with game design. Being contemplative is not a problem. Being narrative-driven is not a problem. But asking the player to hold a controller just to give them the illusion of participation, without any real mechanical depth behind it, quickly becomes frustrating. Mixtape wants to make the player feel something, but too often forgets to give them something meaningful to actually play.Even its direction, which is clearly intended to be one of its biggest strengths, ends up showing its limits. The game constantly relies on stylish shots, “cool” sequences, slow motion, musical set pieces, and moments meant to feel poetic. But after a while, much of it feels forced. By trying so hard to be touching, rebellious, and visually striking, Mixtape often feels like it is chasing the image of a coming-of-age indie film without having the writing or gameplay needed to support **** character writing is not convincing either. Rockford and his friends are supposed to carry the emotional weight of the story, but their dialogue, behavior, and relationships often feel more like written intentions than truly memorable characters. The game wants to talk about youth, freedom, friendship, and the transition into adulthood, but it does so with a heaviness that regularly breaks the authenticity it is trying to **** treatment of the time period is also problematic. The game tries to evoke a retro adolescence strongly shaped by an ‘80s-inspired atmosphere and musical culture, but it sometimes brings in themes, dialogue, and relationship dynamics that feel much more contemporary. The issue is not the presence of modern themes or different kinds of relationships, but the way they are integrated. They do not always feel natural within the tone and period the game is trying to portray. As a result, the story sometimes feels caught between retro nostalgia and modern concerns, weakening its overall narrative coherence.Visually, the game has a recognizable art direction, but that is not enough to hide the lack of substance as an interactive experience. A beautiful image does not replace good mechanics. A great song does not automatically turn a passive sequence into a memorable gameplay moment. And an artistic intention, however sincere, does not justify such a lack of depth in the actual game **** sliding sequences perfectly represent the game’s main problem. They are designed as sensory, musical, and emotional moments, but they quickly become repetitive and mechanically empty. You understand what the game is trying to do, but what you mostly feel is what it fails to become: a strong interactive **** the end, Mixtape is a massive disappointment. Its soundtrack is excellent, and a few visual ideas may impress for a few minutes, but the game collapses the moment it is judged as an actual video game. It is too passive, too shallow mechanically, too satisfied with its own presentation, and too clumsy in its writing. Instead of offering a powerful coming-of-age journey, it too often feels like a pretentious interactive video that forgets the most important part of the medium: gameplay.

If there's a game that tell you the problem of modern gaming, well, this is the one. The unlikeable narcissistic characters, the non-sense story, the amount of parts where you actually do something, everything is a joke. This isn't a game, it's an "interactive" movie that it's just dumb and insulting. And guess what, all the critics all love it. I wonder why.

Decent game. Great soundtrack & coming of age concept. These “life is strange” type games are just getting a bit tiring though.

One of the best games of the year. We definitely need a sequel. Everything about this game is just right: graphics, gameplay, story, and performances. A well-deserved 10/10!

The game is a steaming pile of ****, but beyond that, this games receiving high reviews helps us find out which game “journalists” can be bribed to give this game a 90-100. There is not a single 90-100 review that is being honest.

This is not a video game and should not be considered one. It's a bad movie that lasts for over 8 hours. Even as a movie, this ****. The characters are obnoxious and the story if you can even call it that is pure crap. Stay away from this trash

I can't fell the nostalgia at all as it's purely american stereotype of teenage years.

Strongly dont recommend. Why?
Somewhat simple. The 'game' is not really a game. Its more of a movie and even for a movie it isn't that good. The characters are really dislikable, self centered and kinda abrasive. The only good character was the cop and he was supposed to be the bad guy. I mean, how **** of a writing does it have to be, that you side with the supposed villain? Also about the 'gameplay', even though its an interactive movie, shouldn't there atleast be choices? I mean, the whole 'game' is just: press one button, hold W, press one button and the outcome is always the same. BORING. Giving it a 1 instead of 0, since the graphics (besides the facial structures of the characters) are quite nice, but everyone knows that graphics dont really matter IF the game is actually good. Graphics are a rating safety net for really bad games.

A wonderful trip down memory lane to the 80s and 90s. I wouldn't pay any attention to the negative reviews from some users; this is organized review-bombing by people who begrudge the developers their huge success. I’m hoping for a sequel featuring different characters and more great music.

This is not a real game; it is just a movie. Nothing feels alive because you have zero control over the action. The gameplay is completely hollow, lifeless, and boring. You just press buttons to advance scenes without making real choices. It is absolutely not worth buying this product. You are much better off just watching a YouTuber play through it on YouTube for free. Save your money and watch someone else react instead

You can literally experience the whole game by watching a yt video and it would be the same thing as buying the game. It has little to no gameplay and most of it is just walking. The story is very meh and the kinda stuff a very edgy 7th grader would find "badass"

Un voyage nostalgique à travers la musique et les souvenirs/émotions liés à celle ci.
Sublimé par des scènes visuellement magnifiques et une bande son incroyable.
Un gameplay très cool et créatif.

Mixtape is an ****, sickeningly, uncompromisingly terrible experience from back to front. It markets itself as a video game yet seems to WANT to be a movie - the reason why it failed at the latter is easily found in the shallow, laughable writing. If it wants to be a movie so badly, then fine - I’ll review it as such. The characters are such a heavy-handed and unsubtle mountain of unlikeable cliches that receive no development at all throughout. The main character (Rockford) is snobby, arrogant and capable of ruining even the least terrible and derivative of scenes. The dialogue is often laugh-out-loud levels of bad, the kind that’s so bad it’s almost funny, until you realise that it’s actually taking itself seriously and isn’t intending to be a satire of 90s culture (Samantha’s final monologue to her father). Even the plot is terrible - most of the game’s runtime is made of flashbacks that serve to fill in context, instead of introducing and alluding to aspects of the characters’ past organically through the present. It makes for a clunky experience made even more unrewarding by the realisation of just how little the characters develop over the entire timeframe of Mixtape. In short, even if this game were to market itself as a movie, or at the very least an “interactive film”, itd still be a 0. I haven’t even gotten to the “””””GAME””””””” part yet - primarily because there really isn’t any to speak of, and what there is can’t even be called a game. You can quite literally not touch anything to progress the game - the “minigames” aren’t actually games since they require zero input to pass, and have no fail gates. The rest is just a walking simulator around an incredibly small area of someone’s room where you can occasionally interact with something and Stacy can give her characteristically snobby comments on it. I can only commend the soundtrack because it’s the only thing that the studio or producers did themselves, and it shows. Even then, it’s often ruined by Rockford’s UN-FRICKING-BEARABLE commentary on what’s playing. Yeah, man, I can just listen to the Smashing Pumpkins on Spotify instead of needing to play this godforsaken game. Do yourself a favour and don’t bother buying this game. Watch a YouTube walkthrough of it and you’ll get the same amount of interactiveness out of it. Or, better yet, don’t, and walk away with your sanity and an untarnished view of the 90s and one of the best ages of music ever. Take my downvote. 0/10

Pretty decent soundtrack. Honestly didn't get past the Stacy/Cassandra fight and looked up the ending. I don't know who the audience is for this game. It's hardly even a game. The characters are a-holes, the story is paper thin, it just felt like a major drag to play after a while.

Not agreeing with the critic on this one.
I love artsy games, but this game seems to cater to a very specific audience, that is very removed from who I am (or, in this case "was" back in the 90s). The discourse around it is incredibly toxic.
To me, the game has lacklaster gameplay, lacklaster characters and story. To others, they resonate so much with everything that is going on, that it's even moving. For me it's too much, I couldn't wait for it to be over

fun fact: since mixtape can be beaten with only 200 button presses, and the fact that on average you need to move your analog stick 2000000 times to get stick drift, if every single one of those button presses was on the analog stick (Which they werent) you would have to beat this game 10,000 times and the average playthourgh of mixtape takes 4 hours so on average you would have to play this game 40000 hours to get stick drift from only playing it and stick drift is a common issue for a lot of people (i personally had it on one of my controllers), this game isnt a game its a movie with no plot disguised as a game

One of the most beautiful and best games I have ever played. It immediately made me feel nostalgic for my own youth. The graphics are fantastic, and the music fits the poignant story perfectly—every single second of it. We need more games like this.

How the fk this almost held to the level of Ex33 is just laughable. Graphics from the early 90s, awful, unlikeable characters, boring and pointless story. Absolute garbage. The Disney Star Wars of indie video games. Embarrassing.

Ok so this isn't a 1 out of 10, but it sure as hell isn't a 10/10 either. How someone can give it 10/10 just shows reviews are bought or/and flawed. Absolutely nuts to compare this to games like RDR2, Mass Effect-series, Witcher, Last of us, Cyberpunk 2077, FF-games, God of war, Uncharted-games, et etc and all the old master pieces like Doom, Half life, Civilization, Deus Ex... it's just deranged. + Some story elements and scenes/convos that stood out, the sound and the music choices is REALLY good, in many scenes they fit what happens on screen very well and the environments around the characters are gorgeous. - the main characters, holy crap.. I really dont care about them, and in a story driven game, building on emotionality, that must be one of the key elements. And yes, I grew up in the time this game is supposed to play out. Also, the.."gameplay"? Or rather lack of it? Huh? This isn't a game, it's an ok interactive movie with annoying main characters. 6 out of 10. Maybe even a 7 for the little nostalgia effect it actually triggers. Not a 10.

This game doesn't even understand its subject matter. It takes place in the late 90s, but everyone acts like it's the late 80s. Plus, the euphemisms and speech eccentricities are far too modern.
Very little that could be considered gameplay, and the plot is too thin and poorly written to care about.
Gave a 2 because the rock skipping minigame is okay.

Really? This game gets a perfect score? It's supposed to be a narrative-driven game with an amazing, nostalgic soundtrack that "defines the '90s" and whatnot. Sure...
Most of the songs aren't actually from the '90s, and they are absolutely not generation-defining. Instead of hip-hop, grunge, or punk rock, we get this sanitized pop that has absolutely no place in the '90s—it's just someone's idealized fantasy of that era. The '90s were rebellious, edgy, and rough. This feels like a game curated by someone who grew up in 2010. The main characters are obnoxious, annoying, and selfish. Look, if you want to give us characters like this, they need to have redeeming qualities or some motives. But these absolute husks have nothing at all. I couldn't care less about any of them. Most of their dialogue is cringey as hell and unlikable.
Then there is the "gameplay." It takes about three hours to complete (in my opinion, it only lasts that long so you past the refund window by the time you finish). So, how is the gameplay? Well, there isn't any. You just move forward and interact with objects to progress. Sure, games like Life is Strange or Telltale's series have a similar gameplay loop, but the reason those games work is because your choices matter. What you say or do can lead to a different ending. But in this supposed 10/10 game, you have no choice at all; everything leads to the same uninspiring conclusion. In my opinion, Mixtape is a terrible "game" with a terrible story. It would have been much better off as a miniseries or something.

Visually interesting with a lovely art style and fantastic soundtrack… however, it falls apart when you have to play the game. To call it a “game” is an interesting conversation. There are entire sequences, including important plot points and story climaxes, that don’t even require the player to play. It creates an illusion of you needing to hit quick time events, but ultimately if you lay down the controller there is no consequence. Entire chapters of the game don’t even require your input as a player. It has some good writing and fun aspects but ultimately fails to become a game worthy of players time. There is not much **** here per se. Ultimately a novel experience, I would consider it highly passable. This is by no means a must play game. With about 3 hours of “gameplay” it’s difficult to justify the purchase. If youre interested in the game you are probably better off watching a let’s play video on YouTube as your experience as a player and a watcher are essentially the same.

This "game" is more a movie than a game... Also when is a indie game made 30 people?
Soundtrack is decent. How did a indie game get licensed music?

I'm an X'er. I was a teenager in the 90s and believe me: 90s wasn't like it is in this game. We love punk, funk, metal, pop music (secretely), anime, cartoons, MTV talkinbg about internet, the end of the 16 bit era and the arrival of PS, Saturn ****'s off! Reminded me of people using "Everybody wants to rule the world" with 90s footage.
And it isn't a game. Youtube has more interaction than this game. The game isn't horrible because it has some charm between the characters. For people who likes movie games, ok! But not for me.

I have played a lot of interactive games that are also movie-esque in my life. Many telltale games, many quantic dream games repeatedly. And as someone who have played those games let me tell you:This is not a video game. It's just not. In many games, the soundtrack can be a significant tool. But a tool regardless. In games like Undertale actual indie games. Here, the music is the whole point.. And they didn't even made the music themselves maybe that would be acceptible. The characters are very stereotypical 90s hollywood punk rock kid stereotype. The protagonist is utterly unlikeable and cringe. Instead of buying this game, look at the soundtrack, make a playlist of it and listen to those yourselves. I'm sure it'd be a much better experience than this waste of money.

the high reviews that this game has from the press and where they come from already should tell you all you need to know, its not a bad game (if it can be considered a game), i enjoyed it, but its also not good, and way far from excellent, my whole critique would literally be: lacks gameplay, lacks an interesting story, but very beautiful art direction and style

The greatest surprise of the year! Whether in terms of the nostalgic atmosphere or the vigorous vibe, the game so actively stirs your emotions and bounces back and forth until your emotional defense is completely crushed. The medium of game, paralleled by neither literature nor image, perfectly serves to be the tunnel through which senses of freedom and exuberance pass and flow. Undoubtedly a genuine tribute to both youth and music, and definitely an emotionally overwhelming catastrophe for tiktok and trash songs lovers
