Mexican Ninja is a great beat’em’up, albeit a little on the short side. But that doesn’t matter, because the gameplay more than makes up for its shorter length. You have exceptional attention to detail, stunning visuals and intense gameplay that feels very rewarding, especially control-wise. Combat is skill-based, so it encourages you to get better and better as you play, making the experience way more interesting every time. I also liked the progression loop since every run unlocks new upgrades, combos and abilities, so make everything feel fresh. Unfortunately, the game doesn’t have co-op for now, which would be incredible and a great addition to the experience. There were also some technical issues and repetition, which is normal for this type of game. But as a whole, it felt like a great beat’em’up that doesn’t overstay its welcome. It’s intense, you can repeat the experience and make it slightly different, and the combat always feels very good.

Mexican Ninja’s satisfying combat and art style are worth more than its low price of admission. Its standout thematic is a great start to hopefully something more from the Madbricks crew, even if some of its roguelike elements feel underdeveloped.

Mexican Ninja is a very likable Roguelike game that knows how to stand out in the right places. All in all, it's a very nice and fun experience, even if, in the final test, the combination of Mexicans and ninjas feels less high-quality and impressive than I would like it to be.

Mexican Ninja is an incredibly entertaining game packed with contemporary references to geek culture and hilarious cultural mashups. Bold and irreverent, it turns its clever use of language into one of its greatest strengths. Its mechanics are somewhat limited and its visuals could use additional polish, but its humor, distinctive identity, and unapologetic personality make it a must play.

It may not be a deep roguelike that will keep you going for months, but wandering the streets of Nuevo Tokyo with a katana in hand, Latin tunes playing in the background, and a sombrero on your head was still a damn good time.

If you’ve played most of the other great games in the genre in recent years and still want more, Mexican Ninja offers a very solid experience. The more I played it, the more I was impressed by how many things are well done, even if I never entirely got past the fact that it doesn’t quite live up to the best of its competition. If I’d connected with its world, if it offered multiplayer, or if it had a few more elements that set it apart from the pack, I might have fallen in love with it, but it’s ultimately a good game worth considering.

Mexican Ninja’s strangely easy gameplay and crass humour fail to deliver on such a promising concept. It’s cheap, broken, entertainment for the brainless that lazily throws swear words and stereotypes together in the hope it masks the need to commit seppuku.
