Chronicles of Mystery: The Scorpio Ritual
75
After drawing me in and taking me on a whirlwind ride, The Scorpio Ritual left me with nothing but a stunned expression and a heartache the like of which I haven't felt since 2007's Culpa Innata. Those with abandonment issues, play at your own risk.
City Interaction’s talent – as well as an appreciation for the genre – is evident in the graphics, in the structure of the game and in the attention paid to puzzle construction, but it is lacking in the attention to small details that most often separate the ‘must play’ adventure titles from those soon to be languishing in the bargain bin.
Chronicles of Mystery may be lacking in the excitement and action departments, but it’s and otherwise well-constructed adventure.

This game is a nice solid 6 for this point-and-click genre. When first started, has nice graphics, nice music, a nice main character, and gives a very pleasant feel to the game. It is unfortunate it is let down by having some odd and nonsensical dialogue to bring you along, the terrible ending (though that bothers me less if the journey to the ending is nice, which it is, but still, it is a very lazy ending), and that it is very short. If you get it for $5 or less it is worth it, and you will enjoy the experience for 4-5 hours, I know I did. You just also may wish afterwards that with such nice music and graphics, it could have been much more and much bigger. If you liked Syberia or Broken Sword, you will like the diversion this gives.

The highlight of this game is the well-presented graphics. The voice work is uneven but the main characters are done well. The story is yet another riff on the Knight of the Templar and remains serviceable until the ridiculous ending. The biggest problem is that the game is excessively linear even for the genre. You simply cannot do any actions until some prior action has been done and the game informs you of this bluntly. If you haven't got all the objects from a map, you can't leave. The game is plagued with do random event X in Random location Y and then get a phone call to make the story progress. It's nonsense. Then there is the problem of the voice acting getting clipped, and the fact that the voice acting often is vastly different from the text, and random objects you need lying around in random locations, and you have a mess. It's too bad because there are some parts of this game done well and other parts are done poorly. It has potential but just never lives up to it.

Still, if you're looking for a solid adventure game with some interesting story ideas, this is the right place to be.

I should also point out that The Scorpio Ritual is a short game—six to eight hours of play spread across four main locations—and it culminates with an unusually abrupt ending.

Worth Playing
Chronicles of Mystery: The Scorpio Ritual manages to partly succeed in introducing the world to a clever and adventurous character in Sylvie Leroux, and while she's got a long way to go before she can catch up to Niko from Revolution's Broken Sword series, there's enough potential for future installments to see her on a much longer episode of hidden secrets and ancient mystery.

Excellent adventure game takes advantage of a catchy story, charming graphics and really low hardware requirements. Ritual is a perfect choice for both experienced adventurers and newcomers. [Issue#174, Jan 2009]
