Ashwalkers: A Survival Journey

CD-Action
An interesting, quite easy and simple survival game that puts emphasis on atmosphere, storytelling and decision-making rather than action. Overall, it’s like a dish with too little salt in it, not amazing, but still tasty. [07/2021, p.52]
By no means is Ashwalkers an action-packed survival adventure sim, but the story and importance of the journey was compelling enough to have me on the edge of my seat through my playthrough. I cared about Squad Three and wanted them to succeed, and for a narrative-driven game such as this, isn't that all you can ask for? If postapocalyptic survival games are your jam, Ashwalkers is worth its very reasonable $12 price tag and offers a different spin on the genre that you know and love.
It will take you 3-4 hours to complete your first adventure in Ashwalkers, and after that you will realize that it should have ditched the out-of-balance survival layer and presented the story as a pure visual novel.

*These Are Just Notes Taken While I Played The Game* The Good: The story in this game has been interesting and one of the few points keeping engaged while playing. While you trek through the game there will be bits and pieces of story given to you and tell you more on the on going social and personal conflicts within this world. During your trek you will be told to make decisions and each one while have either a positive or negative reaction. I loved that whether you get to be stealthy and avoid as much conflict, or being diplomatic and try to solve things without any violence and a couple other choices as well! The Bad: Pacing... OMG the pacing in the game the characters walk but they walk so slow and maybe for me it should have speed walking or running with a negative buff on your survival status. I started to zone out a bit half way since the slow pace did deter me and made me feel **** Ugly: resources. After the 3/4th way of the game there is a sudden resource drought and it felt unexpected as most of the game there were enough resources to keep your squad alive enough to keep going. This could just be due to my play-through. More info on this in the IMO section. IMO: So this game... It’s been a pretty average experience for me and that’s due to having a good story to keep my attention but not enough where I would remember to play this game the next day. Thankfully, this game depending on how your play-through is, You can run through this game start to finish within 2-3 hours. Now talking about how long this can take you, this game pacing like I said before is really slow and may make you check the time thinking you spent 3-4 hours when it was only 30 minutes and that’s not a feeling I want a game to make me feel. To elaborate further on the resources section. This game has the choices and near the end I lost 2 out of the 4 squad mates. Will say 1 of them died due to my dumb choice but other one died due to being basically at the end but decided to take camp to prevent a death of one of them but due to once your at the end of the game you no longer get resources so your characters still lose survival status while being at the end where i feel should have not happened but none the less I lost my 2 squad mate due to this. Again thought will note this could be due to my play-through and the decisions I have made while playing. I call it ugly part of the game as I felt if you are at the end where I personally feel the survival status should no longer be in affect. Thanks for reading my ted talk! Nice atmosphere and visual design, but there is simply very little game here to actual engage with. The gameplay and narrative is just too limited for me to care, the worldbuilding is almost non existent and the interactions feel like a roll of dice than brainteezers. However you solve the puzzle, it doesn't really matter. The game is also surprisingly easy, never once did I come close to dying, which is at least nice, because the gameplay is so basic, I was already bored by my second hour.

Crazy control scheme. It seems to me the developers strove for being avant-garde, and disregard everything we have learned about game controls in the last few decades. So, they opted for inventing their own artistic controls which they do not even explain in the tutorial. Nice graphics. Unfortunately, I cannot say much about the gameplay, as I never found out how to use any of the camping controls.

God is a Geek
Ashwalkers is an inventive survival sim that puts the story centre stage. Whilst managing resources and the survivor's physical and mental health is important, the choices you have to make are where it's at its most inventive.

Ashwalkers tells an open-ended story the right way, mixing equal parts agency and powerlessness, hope and despair. From its bleak, monochromatic world to one of our own that can be just as unkind to the downtrodden, Ashwalkers leaves a memorable message to take away from this ambitious game.

Ashwalkers is an interesting and sometimes dark story. I was always curious whether I was making the right choices and getting my team closer to their goal, or if I was sending them to their deaths. Seeing how even the smallest of choices can affect the playthrough was rewarding, and the mystery of the Dome of Domes is worth a trek through the wastes for any fan of survival management and choice-based games.

While Ashwalkers has an interesting art style and atmosphere, it does little to capitalize on its survival mechanics, choice based narrative, and is far too easy for what it wants to be. While Ashwalkers may be worth a single playthrough, there’s not much to motivate repeat visits to this wasteland.

The core game of Ashwalkers is a great, atmospheric experience that takes classics like The Oregon Trail and transports them to a vividly realised post-apocalyptic setting. Characters are nicely defined, resource management is clearly presented, and I genuinely wanted to find out more about the world and its inhabitants. However, the actual process of playing the game is just too slow and becomes boring after the first couple of runs. There is a good survival and choice-filled game here, but you have to walk a long long way to get to it.

Ashwalkers really just isn’t an interesting experience. It takes the post-apocalypse and manages to make it soporific. I can’t really recommend it unless you’re looking for a unique way to cure your insomnia.

Both in terms of story-telling and mechanically a very superficial as well as drawn out experience.
