I was never a huge fan of Tlou, but I WAS a big fan of Joel and Ellie. This game does NOTHING to fill that void. The gameplay is a improvement overall and the visuals are stunning, so I can see myself recommending this game at the very least. But if you're looking for a coherent story, there is NOTHING for you here.

I don't think this game is NEARLY as smart and subversive as it thinks it is, but it's still pretty smart and subversive. The game is incredibly ham-fisted about its message and I feel like the game tries to guilt you a bit too much, but it's nice to see bigger games attempt something like this. It's decent, nothing more, nothing less. Not some masterpiece, as some would imply, but anyone giving this under a 4 is probably lying.

A very passionate indie project by the developer, who's clearly very talented. Great story, solid soundtrack and neat visuals. The game does feel very dated gameplay-wise though. It's not like the gameplay is poor, just that it fails to stand out in any real way when compared to some of its contemporaries (ESA, Hollow Knight, Guacamele). Overall a good game which I'd recommend to anyone who's a fan of the genre.

This is one of the most interesting indie games I've played. It uses the medium of games to tell a rather unsettling story that probably won't sit well with many people. I'm reminded of the Yakuza games, which have absurd humour and lighthearted moments between a serious story. As the title suggests, the game is quite painful. I'm reminded of Rain World a lot, where the game will just blow you up or poison you without giving you any real chance to avoid it. Your choices REALLY matter here. You're constantly losing party members, items and your ARMS, believe it or not. And they have real consequences, and can get you killed very easily, even on normal difficulty. The game is a RPG with turn based combat, and the gameplay is solid enough, even though I don't enjoy turn based combat very much. You have a party of characters with you, each one of them colourful and unique. As I said, the best thing about the gameplay is how much your choices can affect actual, real gameplay and not just story beats. I'm not going to talk about the story very much. It's rather messy and disturbing, which is fine if you're into that sort of thing, I guess. I'd much rather talk about the presentation and atmosphere. The soundtrack is ... weird. In good way for sure, but I highly doubt everyone will like it as much as I did. That fits more or less with the general tone and atmosphere of the game. Weird, sort of messy, quite dark, but endearing if you can manage to get into it. My thoughts on Lisa mirror those on Rain World. A rather dark, brutal and weird game, but if you can get into it, you'll love it. If ANY of what I've said sounds appealing to you, if you're tired of conventional games and want to take a risk, I'd recommend this game in an instant.

Just like the previous games (and, by extension, the Uncharted games), Shadow of the Tomb Raider has some great setpieces, nice visual, and some fun but shallow gameplay. Unfortunately, these games have always had mediocre stories, and this one is no exception. Lara Croft is unbearably shallow. Somehow, the writers thought that making her get hurt a lot would add some depth to her character, which is honestly a stupid idea. And unlike Uncharted, you can't argue that the story being shallow is the point. The writers clearly tried here, and failed miserably. As she is now, Lara Croft is whiny, unsympathetic and overall just unlikable. If you've enjoyed the Uncharted games or the previous Tome Raider games, you'll probably like this one. If not, avoid it like the plague.

Katana Zero's core gameplay loop is great, the soundtrack is incredible, and the story is at the very least interesting enough to carry the rest of the game. I just wish there were more of it. Most of all, I wish there was more gameplay. The one shot kills are incredibly satisfying, and I wish there were more levels to use them in. Many of the bosses are also too easy and get over too fast. In fact, some bosses have final phases that don't even trigger sometimes because you've dealt too much damage. I'm not kidding when I say that I would have given Katana Zero a 10 if it was pure gameplay. As it is, it's still a pretty good game though. If you want a game with a satisfying core gameplay loop and a killer soundtrack, play Katana Zero. I can't say you'll like the rest of the game, though.

What a great game. The player controls a girl called Madeline. Madeline's moveset is very simple: She has a jump, a climb move to grab on and climb onto vertical surfaces, and a 8 way dash. The entire game is built around just those 3 mechanics. It's easy to learn, but mastering it is one of the most satisfying things I've ever done in a game. The game's difficulty curve is PERFECT. After beating the main game, you unlock B-side levels of the main levels, and they are INCREDIBLY hard. I never thought I would be able to beat them, but I got better. And that's what makes Celeste such a fantastic game. It's genuinely great at getting you to overcome obstacles that seem impossible, which fits greatly with the game's themes. Celeste is about the difficulty of The End is Nigh, but is far less frustrating than that game. I attribute this to the game's music, which is INCREDIBLE. It's funny how much of a difference such a small thing makes. When you keep hearing the same track over and over again, it had better be a good track. I'd recommend playing with a D-Pad for an ideal experience. The sticks work, but they can be a bit annoying with the 8-way dashing.

This is NOT a game for everyone. The solutions for some of puzzles can feel insane to do without looking them up, but almost every puzzle has meticulous detail, subtle hints, and cleverly hidden environmental details. Almost every puzzle feels satisfying to solve, and many left me feeling "how did they program that?" That being said, I do feel that making all the puzzles grid based limits the game's potential a bit. The amount of reused/filler puzzles isn't insignificant either, which is disappointing for a 40$ game (more on that in a bit). The game has NO respect for the player's time. A simple raft takes 2 minutes to reach its destination. This is annoying to me because the game claims to respect player's intelligence and time in the description, when it does no such thing. I think The Witness is pretty good game, but costs 20$ too much. The game isn't too long, and it reuses so many puzzles that it simply does nothing to earn the 40$ price tag. If you've enjoyed games like Riven, Myst, Outer Wilds and the lot, I recommend waiting for a good deal, and grabbing it then.

The bulk of Death Stranding's gameplay is walking across an empty terrain, and it's surprisingly engrossing. The walking is a very meditative experience, and quite unique in it's own way. Some missteps were made here in regards to the balance of the goods you carry, but the walking is a fairly engaging and calming core gameplay loop. Almost everything else in the game is subpar, though. The biggest offenders are the driving sections. You don't have to do anything during those sections. Nothing is happening, and nothing will ever happen. There is no threat, no rules to follow, nothing. It's repetitive, boring and I wish they just weren't part of the game. Setting up zip-lines to skip bits of walking was a very satisfying experience, but they break the game. I'm amazed how much the game lets you skip through zip-lines. The story and characters were a bit of a letdown. The game has been shrouded in this air of intrigue and mystery, but it turns out that despite everything, Death Stranding is a pretty conventional game. Please don't go in expecting any great writing or characters or anything. I'd recommend the game if any of what I said sounds interesting to you. Keep in mind that the walking is quite repetitive, and if lots and lots of walking doesn't sound very fun, I don't think you should play it.

The game also has an interesting New Game Plus which is further enhanced by achievements, making the game a lot more replayable as well. For the cheap price, the game offers 20+ hours of content and lots of replayability, which makes it nearly a must buy. I do wish the performance issues were fixed though.

Still the 2nd best game in the souls series, and one of the best games ever made. I haven't been able to get my hands on a PS5 to play the new remake, but I hope that it stays faithful to the original. The souls series have been relying on their action elements more and more recently, and it's refreshing to revisit the series before it found its identity in action, because the souls games have NEVER been good at that. Your choices really matter in this game. NPCs don't just sit around waiting for you, you really have to be careful. The game isn't difficult when compared to more recent entries into the genre (Hollow Knight, Nioh), but it's far more unforgiving than any of those games, and it's that that makes the game so special. This game is still fantastic 10 years later. The recent souls games and all the "souls-likes" have just helped me appreciate the game more, not less. A must play for anyone who likes difficult games, and I hope the PS5 remake helps more people experience this game.

I, like many others, didn't like 3d World when it first came out, but in retrospect, this game is great! It's rather linear and restrictive when compared to the more open ended nature of the previous games, but that's not really a bad thing, because the game is filled to the brim with creative ideas and it's linearity allows it to channel it in a focused manner. Maybe it isn't as great as some of its predecessors, but it's never bad either. It's a consistent flow of inspired and creative platforming through a series of linear obstacle courses, and is almost 100% perfect in this regard. If you didn't like this game at first, I'd encourage you to play Mario Odyssey first, and play this one after that. It helped me appreciate the game much more, and maybe it'll help you do the same.

I'm really conflicted about this game. It's one of many games which translates the souls formula to 2d, and one thing the game excels in is its themes and atmosphere. It's a lot darker than many similarly inspired games, and there's a lot more blood too. However, gameplay-wise, the game is quite imbalanced and messy, and hardly a stand-out for the genre. The game isn't very hard, especially when compared to the similarly inspired Hollow Knight, but the game is so incredibly inconsistent that it becomes a lot more frustrating than the latter. Magic builds break the game, and the difficulty steadily decreases as you progress, but some enemies will still one shot you out of nowhere. Sometimes. When they feel like it. The game is VERY poorly balanced, but these are things than can be fixed in patches, so maybe this criticism will be redundant soon. The game feels great to play, but I doubt I'll be replaying it anytime soon. Overall I recommend it if you're a fan of the souls series. The game is best experienced blind, so I won't spoil much. Suffice to say that the game has some incredible moments, and should be experienced by anyone who appreciates great atmosphere and storytelling. The game is terrifying at times. It's not the typical type of fear in horror games, it's more the feeling that you could be caught anytime and killed any second, while giving you the feeling that you escaped by the skin of your teeth. It's really something that must be experienced, and it's one of many great sensations the game gives you. The game has some ****, the biggest of which is the game's barriers in certain spots which can glitch out and trap you forever. It's not a huge issue, but worth mentioning. The game also has some performance hiccups, especially if you go very deep, but it's hardly a deal breaker. If you have ever enjoyed a survival game in your life, play Subnautica. I really do mean it when I say that Furi has some of the best music I've heard in a game in a long time. That's going to be subjective of course, but I thought I would mention it. The combat is strictly 2-D, but that's not a bad thing because it solves the biggest issue with most action games: the camera. Where the combat does fall apart is the parrying. There's a green flash, you parry it, you get some health back. You never have to really register the attack animations, you just reflexively hit the parry button. It's not a bad thing really, but I thought it dragged down the combat at least a bit. There are some other issues with hitboxes and your dash length, but those are minor and don't occur very often. Again, the combat itself is quite simple when compared to many other action titles, but the bosses more than make up for it. The story is pretty much a non-element, so I wish they had got rid of the stupid walking sections between bosses. Yeah, downtime is important, but I wish you could skip them somehow. This won't annoy a lot of people, but it hurts the game replay value a lot. Furi is a boss rush with great bosses. That's pretty much all that matters. The other issues exist, but Furi is a 5 hour game, and I enjoyed each one of them. If you want a solid action game with hard bosses, get Furi.

For the price, this game is unbelievably good. The platforming is challenging, the music and story are great, but the game's humour is what sells it. It's much more light-hearted than I expected, but it was a welcome surprise. The indie market is rather oversaturated with retro styled platformers, but this one really stands out. I don't think it's a 10/10, but I'll give it one anyway. The game's up there with Dead Cells and Shovel Knight. What else can I say?

Night in The Woods is a well written piece of semi-interactive fiction, and mostly delivers in this regard. The walking is painfully slow, as is the overall pacing. If you can deal with that, the game's story is quite relatable and touching. It deals with the theme of displacement, but the story takes an abrupt turn after 8 hours which may not sit well with some. The ending was also rather weak, but the writing and mini-games more or less make up for it. As I said, if you can deal with the pacing, there are some great moments here, and I think this game means a lot to a lot of people for good reason.

I see why people love this game. I don't like JRPGs, or RPGs in general, but this game is something special. I think what's really impressive is how well this game holds up even in 2018. I don't want to spoil ANYTHING, so I'll just recommend this game if you can even remotely stand turn based combat.

Why do games like this get so much mainstream attention? Yeah, it's bad, we all know it's bad, Jim Sterling. In that case, support some great indie titles instead. Don't just whine about the same thing over and over again. Destiny 2 is quite bad, and deserves most of the hate it gets. But instead of focusing on games like this, I think it's a lot better to move on and play some good games instead. I hope someone who's reading this user section for laughs sees this. We need to focus on the good, now more than ever.

The game looks fantastic, but I don't think that graphics should be the defining factor in deciding a game's quality. The rest of the game is surprisingly a lot more like your David Cage-Telltale Games interactive movie type of the thing than a shooter, which is a let down (for me at least). The cutscenes are endless, but the thing that irks me most are QTEs. QTEs are NOT interactivity. This would be acceptable in one of David Cage's games, but this is a SHOOTER. I wish that the game had been more clear about this. I wouldn't have purchased it in that case, and I wouldn't be writing this review. If you like interactive movies with pretty visuals, sure, you'll like this. But don't expect an actual game out of this.
