With the way it combines genres, Spiritfarer simply shouldn’t work – and yet it works perfectly! It offers a varied and engaging gameplay, introduces you to fleshed-out characters, sounds and looks really good, and has plenty of content. While the story of a girl who takes up Charon’s duties of carrying souls into the afterlife tackles death without needless pathos and affirms life, it does not lack touching moments. [11/2020, p.66]
Spiritfarer is a perfect example of a game where one has to keep their expectations in check. I honestly feel the trailers have misrepresented what the majority of the game is, and I wish the developers had actually cut the content in half or found a way to speed up the entire process. What’s here hints at the depth of quality that could have been, but the designers seemed more concerned with giving their audience their money’s worth rather than packing ten hours with high-quality content. Or maybe I should have engaged in more meditation over the 25-hour experience. Regardless, Spiritfarer has moments of beauty that will resonate with many players, while others, like myself, will be left wondering what could have been.
Spiritfarer has the body of a seafaring exploration game, the mind of a management sim, and the soul of an emotional journey depicting love, loss, and grief. With gorgeous visuals and a soundtrack to match, Spiritfarer is pleasing to the senses while providing a core loop that’s easy to get lost in. If you like crafting and crying, take a voyage with Spiritfarer, with fair warning to the completionists that this journey may cause more suffering than intended. For smooth sailing, be sure to choose the Switch version of Spiritfarer over anything with achievements enabled. Regardless of the conduit, you should absolutely play this cozy management sim about dying — just be sure to keep the tissues nearby.

In the beginning half, the game was fun enough and the storyline engaging enough that it created a genuine desire to finish, which kept me playing long enough to slowly run into its flaws. Over time I found the later half increasingly frustrating, unclear, and mentally exhausting to get through, as I pushed onward trying to reach the end and eventually slipped into a kind of sunk cost loop where stopping felt harder than continuing.Progression often depends on vague triggers and poorly communicated objectives, which leads to constant backtracking and repeated checking of areas without any clear sense of direction. Instead of feeling like I am moving forward, I spent most of my time trying to figure out what I had missed or what was supposed to happen next, doing tedious tasks that were unnecessarily drawn out and painful to get through, including endless dialogue and repeated interactions that added fatigue rather than **** pacing breaks down significantly in the later sections. What should feel like steady narrative progression instead turns into stretched task loops that interrupt momentum and make the experience feel repetitive and drawn out. Rather than building engagement, it creates exhaustion from constantly managing unclear objectives. I also found myself caring much less about the characters as the game progressed, to the point where I simply wanted each section to end rather than appreciate what it was trying to convey.Overall, the experience became psychologically taxing, exhausting, and a prolonged waste of time that I felt compelled to finish rather than enjoyed.I didn’t finish it because it was rewarding, I finished it because I needed it to stop.

Spiritfarer is a rather unique management game that explores themes rarely tackled in video games. Guiding characters toward the afterlife creates some very touching moments. I really enjoyed its cozy atmosphere and lovable characters. The gameplay can become somewhat repetitive over time. Still, it’s an emotionally powerful experience overall.

Spiritfarer excels in every genre it dips its toes in. It’s a joy to see what’s in every corner of the game’s ocean, explore every nook and cranny of the various islands, and play various minigames all while managing your ship and making sure your passengers are happy before you see them off. It’ll make you laugh, cry, and feel terrified all at the same time. It’s one of those games that, after finishing, you immediately want to play again.

Spiritfarer is an excellent game in its own right, yet its candid handling of death truly sets it apart from its peers. It's addicting gameplay loop is well complimented by its thoughtful story - anyone who likes their relaxation with a side of healthy contemplation will be hard pressed to find a more compelling game this year.

Spiritfarer is a beautiful and unique adventure about death. It might not be revolutionary gameplay-wise, but the way it combines the game mechanics with the storytelling is outstanding.

Spiritfarer has a soft, caring, bittersweet tone that I've rarely encountered in video games. For a game all about death and dying, I only ever felt calm and relaxed when playing it. The management gameplay is varied and engaging, and even though the scope if it leads to the game getting a bit too long in the tooth, it helps connect the incredibly emotional story beats together so well. Mix that up with its beautiful art style and enchanting music, and you've got one of the most emotional management games I've ever played.

Edge Magazine
Spiritfarer loses itself in so much tiresome back-and-forth, ladling on delightful incidental details in the hope that you won't notice that each character's story has become little more than an extended shopping list. [Issue#350, p.96]

Good game with a very original atmosphere and theme. Beautiful and moving. Special mention goes to the soundtrack, which is excellent. A good story with peculiar characters, all of them with very strong personalities, you end up loving many of them, while others you’d gladly throw overboard. Toward the end, it becomes quite repetitive, and resource gathering and crafting start to feel rather tedious.

Spiritfarer is nearly excellent. Beautiful art and music. Heartwarming story. An easy platformer and construction game. A mild woke theme in the story could leave a bad aftertaste if you have fatigue, but can be forgiven, and was likely a publishing requirement because the authors took Canadian government money.
