Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order7
Sep 19, 2021
This game has great voice acting, good visuals, and a pretty good story. Unfortunately, several design decisions really drag it down. 1) No dark side path. You don't really have any incentive to replay the game because of this. 2) It is highly repetitive and you end up having to backtrack over areas constantly The first of these is really the biggest shame frankly. A dark side path wouldn't just give you this second gameplay option. It also forces your companions to have to address how you are changing as a character. So it's an opportunity to explore the personality of these companions more. By stripping this out **** like this they completely missed a huge opportunity as far as I'm concerned. Plus it just removes so much replayability. Also the force powers are underwhelming as well.

Great game that has very distinctive factions and some excellent multiplayer. The campaign is also pretty good as well. Overall I'd highly recommend it.

The game has tons of performance and graphical issues. It shouldn't have been released in the state it is in for that reason alone. But beyond that it is not worth the price just for the gameplay. The story is linear, you are forced into dialog options that no reasonable person would say, all to drive the plot forward. Some of the backgrounds are better than others. The corporate background is painfully boring at the start. But generally the story is filled with boring cutscenes. The NPCs are totally forgettable and come at you a mile a minute. I'm a fair ways into the game and I can only really remember one NPC by name. Even then I would say they were fairly generic. Weapons are a joke. I can shoot someone point blank range in the head with a pistol and at best they take 20% damage. The combat UI is awful. I played a stealthy tech character and I was having to hold down all these keys and do all this stuff just to do very basic tech moves in combat. Levelling up itself is honestly pretty forgettable because of how little you get when you do it. I don't think the game is a 0 and it certainly isn't a 10. But I would not recommend anyone buy it. Even if it were half of its current price. It just doesn't offer enough to be that special.

I don't know how anyone can call this an excellent port. There are serious framerate issues in the games cutscenes, to the point where MyCareer is extremely tedious to play through (since the cutscenes cannot be skipped). You basically end up with cutscenes where the audio is about 10 seconds ahead of the video by the time they are done. Wait to pick up this game in a few months. Its clear its not ready in its current state.

My only criticism of the game would be that you should be able to move your characters as far as they can move in a turn if you decide to only move a fraction of what they can. Only allowing one move per turn is ridiculous when I would otherwise have been allowed to move further.

I've got about 40 hours on it thanks to the head starts. I definitely think they have more work to do with it but overall I quite enjoyed it. I'd give it a 7.5/10.

Magic: Duels of the Planeswalkers 20147

If you haven't played magic in years and are looking for an easy game to pick up and play then this is basically a good choice for you. More hardcore magic players looking for more variety will need to look elsewhere. For $10 I ended up getting a solid 15 hours out of it, which I consider to be a good bargain. Thats even after playing two of the previous planeswalker video games.

This game is amazing. Pros - Rich music - Great atmosphere - Lots of dialogue options - Factions (so that you can never do every quest in one playthrough) - Multiple endings for many quests. - Highly replayable - Many different classes to choose from, and a lot of variety for how you can build any given class. - Good writing - Good voice acting (largely) - Interesting companions. Cons - You have to take your stronghold before you can get 1/2 of the companions. - There are only 8 companions (Baldur's Gate 2 had 17 companions) - The game forces you to take the stronghold (this is an immersion breaker for people who don't want to be tied down) - You can't cast buff spells before battle, but you can cast offensive combat spells and healing spells. This is dumb and breaks immersion. Given that resting (and therefore your ability to cast spells) is supposed to be limited by your access to camping supplies I fail to see why people shouldn't be able to pre-buff, especially given that the game already lets you cast spells outside of combat. - Still is buggy. I've had annoying sound issues on occasion. - Different priests lack variation regarding spells. A priest of Skaen casts the exact same spells as a priest of any of the other gods. At least Baldur's Gate 2 had a small amount of variety when it came to cleric kits and combat. Its definitely not a perfect game, and there are some areas (like companion access) where it should have learned lessons from Baldur's Gate. I'd probably give it an 8.6/10, which rounded makes it a 9/10. Given the total lack of games like it in the last decade its still a welcome addition all the same.

Homeworld Remastered Collection9
Feb 26, 2015
I haven't had any serious issues with the game. The only bug I've seen involved a resource collector getting stuck on an asteroid. So a pretty minor bug all things considered. This is an update that makes the game look gorgeous, even if your computer isn't the most up-to-date. My computer is like 7 years old and yet these uodate graphics play really well. There are also a lot of graphical options that you can go through if you are in a similar situation. The game does change a number of things compared to Homeworld 1. However, it also features a classic edition of Homeworld 1 if that is all you want to play as well. Finally, anyone who gives this re-release anything less than a 7 is a fanatic. Yes, there are changes made to the game as it was converted into the HW2 engine. However the gameplay is still extremely enjoyable and the only people who will notice many of these differences are hardcore Homeworld players.

Its a solid game. However unfortunately they left the game riddled with bugs. I just picked the game up after years of not playing it and lo and behold the game will still continue to freeze on occasion when you say to start a next turn. This was a problem that the game had back in 2009 when it launched. Basically buyer beware.

Its not bad but all it really has going for it is the environments (which are incredible). The quests tend to be worse than Oblivion. Especially when it comes to the thieves guild (where you don't even need to remain hidden to complete the quests and get all the rewards), dark brotherhood, and mages guild quests. The mages guild quests in particular are just terrible. The dark brotherhood quests are probably the best quests in the game and even then they are pretty average by RPG standards. The other criticism I'd have with the game is the frequency in which naturally formed caves turn into large ruins. It just takes away from any immersion when nearly every cave leads to something extensive and grand. Finally races have very little impact in your interactions with people in the game. Its said that dark elves live in poverty and are looked down upon in one of the cities, yet when you go there as a dark elf people react to you no differently than if you had been a Nord. Its just sloppy, lazy, programming on Bethesda's part to not have included different reactions based on race. Even Dragon Age Origins managed to do this (so they had 2 years to improve on what other games have already done). The interface is also clearly designed for consoles and not for PC's. Overall I'd say. Gameplay : 7/10 Graphics: 8.5/10 Sound: 9/10 GUI: 6/10 Replayability: 8/10 Overall: 8/10

Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition10
Oct 30, 2014
It works very smoothly, the new spells are pretty neat, and its nice from a roleplaying standpoint to have all the kits available. They also added in two new cleric kits. Supposedly the Priest of Tempus gets additional dialogue but I haven't yet played as one so I can't say how much that is. Still, its a huge improvement over the original (which I sparked up to compare it with) and it doesn't seem to me like its has the kind of problems that BG2EE currently has. The only fault I could maybe give is that they should have added in more kits, though these are relatively easy to mod in anyways.

Icewind Dale: Heart of Winter7
Oct 11, 2014
Icewind Dale is a pretty impressive game, but the only thing that Heart of Winter really adds to that is Heart of Fury mode and a number of additional spells. Yes it adds its own campaign (as well as ToTL) but it is very short and the storyline is lacking compared to the original game. I'd probably give it a 7.5 as expansions go, but since some have given it an inexplicable 9 I'm giving it a 7 over an 8.

Rise of Nations: Extended Edition2
Aug 28, 2014
The original Rise of Nations is an amazing game. The "extended edition" is just a money grab. Save yourself the money and avoid this re-release. This was just Microsoft wanting to get some extra money from its older games, rather than actually spending the development dollars on a sequel.

Kotor 2 has a lot of fanboys that make the game out to be way better than it actually is. The problem with the game is that you basically have to talk to your companions to get a good idea of what exactly is going on. If you don't you'll get to the end and will wonder "what just happened" because of how poorly explained many things are in the game. What some people call the "richness" of the characters is really just making up for the otherwise sloppy writing and game development. The game was left by Obsidian in a totally unfinished state. There are parts of the game where they clearly intended to add more, but didn't. The final area is an example of this. There is considerably less to explore in this game compared to the first game, and it is much more linear. Also you are never going to be awed by a richly created background on a planet like Manaan. Nope, instead you get a lot of very bland areas like Nar Shadaa and Telos. Nar Shadaa was especially disappointing as the enemy you fight there is probably the least interesting boss in both KOTOR 1 and 2, and the quests you do on the planet are cartoonish at best. The balancing is also frankly laughable, as the additional force powers and advanced classes that they add to the game make it so that enemies are barely even scratching you. The pretty much make your jedi a god by the end, which makes it just not particularly fun if you are looking for any kind of challenge. Ohh and then there are the bugs. The game is full of them, to the point where FANS HAD TO PATCH IT. Even then you only have to go onto other places like the Steam forums to see how many problems people have in trying to either get the game to work or to not crash when they enter their ship or go to a new area. Overall it is inferior to KOTOR, even if KOTOR has a cartoonish final boss itself.

I think its a solid 8/10 game. It requires a lot of effort to learn how different aspects of the game works but overall its very worth it to get into. Just make sure you buy the expansions as Paradox isn't known for its willingness to patch games after release unless its in the form of an expansion.

The game has a few wayword bugs still but you can get fixes for them from the main forums (you can just drop the fixes into an easily found folder its far easier and less time consuming than installing Tutu). They are very easy to find if you google them. I'd give it an 8.5/10. Its better than Tutu or BGT, in that it addresses some of the more serious problems that they never could (due to hardcoding). Also it contains all fixes contained in any of the fixpacks released for Tutu/BG2 and modders like Camdawg have been working with the development team to improve the game. So astralphoenix77's statement that BGEE is "obsolete" because of other community patches is actually far from the truth. The game actually uses an updated version of the ToB engine, better than the version being used by Tutu/BGT. Overall I'd say this is worth spending the extra money on. The new kits they added are interesting, there are no game-breaking bugs (unlike a lot of the older NPC mods for BG2 that haven't been updated in years like Saerileth), and you'll get plenty of hours out of it regardless of how much you pay. Plus you'll be able to use the new kits when BG2EE comes out.
