The Last of Us Part II10
Jun 28, 2020
It's hard to imagine what a sequel to The Last of Us should look like. I was always one of those people who believed that it never needed a sequel, and I think for those wanting one, they wanted an experience like the first one. another adventure with Joel and Ellie. That would have been a safe idea, but instead, Naughty dog gave us a story we weren't expecting, and I am so glad they did because almost every decision they made in this game paid off for me. There were so many moments that I questioned, was frustrated with or even hated, but as the game went on, I came to love the plot and even the structure of the story, which I know many people are mad about. I can understand the frustration of some players, and the game asks a lot of you, to trust the decisions of the game's creators. If you do that I think you'll see the true intentions of this game and walk away astounded as I was. I love this games story. this is a game about empathy, forgiveness, perspective, redemption and reconciliation wrapped and disguised as revenge story that demonstrates the nature of hatred and the cycle of violence up close and personal through the characters eyes and by their hands. its not pretty. Its grotesque, horrific and brutal. The gameplay translates this flawlessly. every combat encounter is white knuckled, because every gunshot and throat stab has a level of detail that is beyond any other game I've played. the controls, animations, gunplay, stealth and melee combat are polished to the highest degree. the way shootouts can transition into brutal slugfests and how you can find yourself jumping back into stealth is so seamless and so natural that I not only find it to be really fun, but one of the most immersive gameplay experiences ever when you include the incredible visuals and level design, character performances great writing and world building. There were moments I was left in tears from sadness, despair, anger and even joy. I cant stress enough how brilliantly this game comes together, but I am shocked to see how many people have pushed against it. In a way it's kind of fitting. I get where people are coming from. Instead of trying to understand each other we are too often irrational and see ourselves as the good guys. but we are all a bad guy in someone else's story to some extent, I'm sure its something most of us are already aware of but don't consider it often enough. this game asks us to consider that, when you shoot down an enemy and hear their friend cry out their name, or are deep in a story moment that frustrates you because its not what you wanted, try to understand why instead of thinking about yourself, because its not about us vs. them, its about all of us and in this fictional case it may very well be the last of us. for real though this game is incredible, but I get why some people don't care for it. I think the most interesting games and movies are the ones that are a bit divisive as well. I'd give like a 96 if I could review it like the critics. very small things that keep it from a perfect 10 for me.

Outlast 26
Sep 8, 2017
outlast 2 is a first person horror game and does many things right and also a lot wrong. the graphics look a lot better compared to the first game, with all the textures looking a lot cleaner and the enviroments have a lot more variety, and there are times when game looks really pretty and it creates a really spooky atmosphere. the lighting I feel could have been done a little better, its essential that this game has many dark areas to make the camera a necessary tool to use and it makes you feel lost and creates panic when trying to find yourself through the darkness, but since your camera needs batteries to work, you need to be able to turn your camera off sometimes in order to conserve battery, and that means you need times where you have enough light to get through areas without us without using the camera the whole time, and unfortuently the game is so dark that there are not many times where you can actually see much of anything without the use of your camera and that can be frustrating, especially since this game is a lot more open than the first and its a lot harder to figure out where to go. the sounds in this game add a lot to the horror and atmosphere, with the chase music making me scream outloud some times, not a lot of variety though. the voice work is fine, nothing memorable about it or bad about it, which is a little unfortunate because I can distinctly remember some of the characters chilling voices and dialogue from the first game and whislteblower dlc but nothing really stands out here. the gameplay is kindof a mixed bag for me and it really depends on different sections of the game. first of all im happy to say that this game is more ambitious and takes great steps in making innovations from the first game when it comes to level design and some of the mechanics and story elements, but some of these ambitions ended up hurting the experience greatly. they made the game more open which created more panic when you were being chased and were trying to find a way to go and I felt this worked really well in early parts of the game, except when you would just hit one of the games many dead ends and turn around with like 4 men and women with knives and pitch forks forming a wall of inevitable murder. Unfortuently this really made the game frustrating when you get to the middle section of the game which takes place in the forest and there is little to no clear direction a lot of the time with an enemy that can attack you from a ranged distance. there were parts in this section of the game that were so frustrating that I wanted to quit the game entirely and the worst part was that this section of the game I didn't find scary at all and it took me about 2 hours or so until this part was over with. on a positive note, I loved how the game implemented some psychological horror into the game, and created some of the games best moments. when the game was scary, it was really scary. I didn't find the characters as memorable as the first game unfortuently and that was kind of a bummer but I still felt atleast two of the main bad guys for lack of a better term were pretty intimidating, with one of them being very forgettable to me, but I appreciate that they tried something different with this character. the story was kindof a mess, because unless your reading the files and notes you pick up, your gonna be left very confused by the end, and even if you do understand whats going on, I felt that the story was underwhelming in the same way a story about how in the end it was all just a dream is underwhelming, it has a similar thing going on. over all I was kind of disspaointed in the game as a whole, but the game was really scary most of the time and I really appreciate the developers for taking risks even though they didn't all pay off, and I think it is a game worth playing if you were a fan of the first game, but maybe wait for a discounted price.

Nioh9
Sep 8, 2017
nioh is an action rpg with heavy inspiration from dark souls but is unique enough in its own way to stand on its own as a an original title. the game gives you a few options on how you would like to run the game, I chose to have it run at 60 fps with a lower graphics, but even then the game still looks really good, and the 60fps is a much better way to play and would take that over the pretty graphics even though it does look very pretty in that mode. the games sounds great and with all the swords slashing and pulses bringing a lot of energy to the fights and the music is amazing. the game has a really great soundtrack, but it really could use more music, especially when it comes to the boss fights because for a majority of bosses your gonna be hearing the same boss theme, I would have loved a different theme for every single boss. the voice acting is ok with a lot of it being in Japanese, so its hard for me to judge the quality of it but there was never a moment of weirdness or odness from any of the voices that I could tell. the gameplay is absolutely the best part of this game, its extremely challenging and satisfying and brings a huge amount of depth that works too damn good. its easily one of the funnest games ive ever played and ive never played an action hack and slash kind of game like this with the amount of depth and attention nioh has. it just feels so good, and it never gets stale because of that. the boss fight in the game are on par in quality with those in the dark souls series and were some of the most grueling fights ive experienced in a while. a large majority of these bosses were excellent while some were kind of a miss, and there were two fights that really frustrated me but otherwise they were great. the levels themselves were designed very well with many looping shortcuts and a decent variety of locations kept it mostly pretty fresh, but there were many levels that got reused constantly for side missions and that could be a little disappointing, but there are so many different levels that I didn't mind this too much. the story is probably its weakest aspect but it isn't bad, just kindof hard to follow sometimes with a mix of cutscenes and lots of reading mission details to tell the story, so your gonna miss out a lot on whats going on in the story if your not reading everything. with that in mind nioh is probably my favorite game this year so far because of how much fun it is and rewarding it feels to overcome its challenges. the game took me between 60 and 70 hours to beat so you will get a lot of content out of the game, this includes all the side missions which I did as well. this game isn't for everyone though, this is a very challenging game and is in no way casual, so just warning you, its gonna be tough.

Resident Evil 7: biohazard9
Sep 7, 2017
this game returns to its roots while continuing to innovate the formula. the game usually looks really good with photo realistic graphics that really adds to the atmosphere along with some great lighting affects and excellent character models that make the game terrifying at times, but suffers from some odd really bad textures on certain things in the enviroments and is noticeable but not too often. the music does what it needs to do but is nothing memorable besides the main theme of the game which Is really cool and creepy. most things sound decent in the game with some of the guns needing a bit more kick to them. The voice acting is actually fantastic which is such a surprise since resident evil is known to have pretty bad voice acting. the gameplay is great, encounters with the baker family are unique and scary and you never feel that you have control of any situation and really feel like your trying to survive. unfortuently there is a lack of enemy variety but the baker family does a great job making up for that with how each one of them offers variety and new challenge throughout the whole game or atleast until you get towards the end of the game. this game is a hell **** time and constantly surprised me with great memorable moments and an actually pretty solid story. the key things here were that the game was scary, fun to play and never got stale, with situations changing and great level design for a majority of the game and was a very memorable experience and im very excited for the future of resident evil.

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice9
Sep 7, 2017
hell blade is sort of an exploration/puzzle/adventure game with with a combat system that's very familiar and fairly simple, but really satisfying and very tense a lot of the time. I enjoyed a lot of the puzzles in the game and thought a lot of the challenges with puzzle aspects were really interesting, but some of the puzzles get repeated quite often and even though I enjoyed them and thought they were neat, when you get into the late game and still have to solve the same kindof puzzle you've been doing since the beginning it can become kind of annoying, but thankfully there is a lot of variety to the kinds of challenges youll be facing through the game. the game uses audio very creatively and incorporates its audio as a main mechanic in the game and it works really well and makes you feel like a crazy person much like the main character Senua, and is one of the most original and fresh concepts ive seen in a game and brings a lot of awareness to mental illness and how greatly it affects people. the narrative is really good and there are many powerful and emotional moments that are well earned, and is one of the strongest aspects of this game. the story is very smart and well told and I became very invested in senua, her story, her struggles and her flaws. the story creates a very well realized world as well. this is a very dark tale with some really dark subjects being told and there are times where I was actually really scared and disturbed which I wasn't expecting. I think this is one of the best games ive played this year. the only problems I had were with a few of the puzzles being a little frustrating because the didn't give enough clear direction, but that was only with two of them, and a few sections of the game were drawn out a bit to long taking me out of the experience a little I don't understand why they needed to be that way they could of just shortened those small moments and I felt these little frustrations took me out of the game a lot especially the some of the reapeating puzzles, but other wise this is a must play game and I highly recommend it. there is no game like this out there and its a very unique, fresh, intense, epic and emotional experience. the game is about 8 hours but is half the price of a full price game, and I forgot to mention that the game is absolutely gorgeous and I adored the games design of the locations, enemies and atmosphere.

ABZU8
Aug 3, 2016
Abzu is somewhat of an exploration game, similar to journey. Im gonna be comparing this game to journey quite a bit during this review, because of how similar it is and the fact that the art director of journey was the lead director of this game. If you don't know what journey is, simply keep in mind that I find it to be a near perfect game and is one the most emotional games I have ever played. Is this game as good as journey? no, but it has a lot going for it still. The game is absolutely beautiful when it comes to its art design and game physics, possibly one of the most beautiful games I have ever played visual wise. The game mechanics work well but are way to simplistic and I wish they would have implemented more ways to make your way through the game instead of just swimming. The "puzzles" are way to simple as well, not that I expected the puzzles to really challenge me, but I did want them to be fun atleast, and they just weren't. The game didn't resonate with me as much as I hoped it would, infact when the game ended I felt like it was really missing something and was really disappointed, but after some reflection I think the game does a good job at making you feel a sense of awe and wonder and connection to the world of the game, but still fails to really leave a lasting impression. I might sound kind of negative towards this game, but I actually really enjoyed it while I was playing and was extremely immersed in the visuals and sound design of the game. I really enjoyed the mechanics and how they felt even if they were overly simplistic, and there definitely some emotional moments in the game, but it didn't leave me with anything to really remember by or take away from it besides it beautiful design, which was quite disappointing for a game that is so well made in almost every aspect. Journey had themes and messages that were very clear by the end of the game that were very impactful, and that's what made the game so great apart from is beautiful design, and I would say abzu is an even more beautiful game but has no impact in the end or at least a very underwhelming impact in my opinion, but I could see some people being very moved by this game and have a great love for it, and I hope that's the case for anyone else who plays it. I guess I simply couldn't get a clear picture of how I should be feeling or understanding of what this game was trying to be, and that could just be me not analyzing the game properly, but I did put a lot of thought into this game and really couldn't get much out of it as I wish I did.

Journey10
Jul 21, 2016
journey is a puzzle platformer, and as the name implies, its about a journey that the player goes on for reasons that aren't immediately clear. The game really focuses on making the puzzles in the game add context to the world and story, favoring visual storytelling over a narrative. The game does an incredible job at evoking emotions through the way you interact with the world and other players you may, or may not see in the game as they go on their own journey. As I progressed through the game, I found myself so in the moment all the way through and I didn't want to stop playing, and when I finally got to the end, I was almost sad that it was over. This game is the embodiment of the expression, "its about the journey, not the destination." an expression that people may or may not agree on depending on your view on life, but after playing this game, I'm sure you will believe it. there are lots of games that have gotten me to tear up a little bit out of sadness, but very few have ever got me to shed tears of joy. This game does everything it sets out to do perfectly without a single flaw in my eye. for those looking for a challenge or steller gameplay, you wont find it here. For those looking for a meaningful and unforgettable experience, play it. not to say the game play isn't good, it adds a lot to the game, very relaxing and feels very natural, but its not the reason the game is so good. The reason this game is so great is because of how well it evokes emotions with such a simple story and game mechanics, relying on its visuals and the context of the player's role within the world. If you enjoy this game as much as I do for these reason's I would highly suggest playing other games like shadow of the colossus and Ico on playstaion 2 or the ported version of these games on playstation 3. I cannot praise this game enough for being so simple and yet leaving such a huge impact on me. I don't think everyone is going to necessarily get what I got out of this game, because the enjoyment of this game is completely based on how much the game resonates with you. If the game doesn't speak to you then all your left with is the gameplay which is fun and relaxing but in itself nothing really special. This isn't really a flaw, because it is pretty clear that this game was meant to be looked at as a piece of art. Even though the Mona Lisa is undeniably one of the greatest paintings in the world, it literally means nothing to me and that's fine, if this game means nothing to you that's also fine, but you cant deny that it is one of the most beautiful games of the last generation of consoles.

INSIDE9
Jul 14, 2016
this is a very fascinating and profound experience. Inside delivers on everything it sets out to be, its visually stunning with a very unique visual style, and the gameplay also has its own unique feel to it. Its that kind of story that paints a big enough picture to get some idea of whats going on but leaves lots of areas for you to fill in yourself and make your own interpretation of this very ambitious story, themes and ideas. Not everyone is going to enjoy this game, because to fully appreciate it you have to really read into it, but even for those not willing to, the puzzles in the game should keep most people entertained. the puzzles are very well thought out and just as unique as everything else, unfortuently I do wish some of the puzzles could have been more challenging, but that's more a nitpick than anything. the only real issue I have with the game is that it can be a little overly obtuse, which for some may be a good thing allowing more discussions for theories, but it leaves feeling more confused then enlightened once you finish the game. I love that it leaves a lot to interpretation but it feels that it leaves to much of the picture blank and by the end of the game your not really sure what your looking at. But after reading some theories and some analyzing of your own, it may become a bit clearer, but I really do feel the game would be better if it was a little bit more concrete and is what is keeping it from being a 10. the gameplay can make you feel a little gloomy, but I feel the developers were trying to evoke those kind of emotions from the player, even if it made the game a little bit less enjoyable, which I really appreciate them doing, sacrificing what people may want for the sake of art is something developers are too scared to do now a days and its great to see small indie games taking those sorts of risks. definitely something you should try if you are into artistic games, you may end up loving it.

Pokemon GO6
Jul 14, 2016
if im looking at made the game is, I can confidently say that there is a lot of things that need improving, but the overall experience of this game and what it means for gamers, and the gaming community is very good. servers go down constantly, the game freezes up a lot, and the actual battles are quite disappointing, but capturing pokemon and the way they have it set up for pokemon to appear is done in a very clever way and is what makes this game really fun and addictive to play and has started a phenomena that gaming culture has never seen before, and that's getting players excited to walk around there town or city looking for pokemon in the real world, and just being able to pull that off enough for it to be enjoyable as it is a huge achievement. this game is going to get great media attention and possibly for once improve the gaming communities reputation, possibly helping people to respect it more and possibly bring more people into gaming culture in a very positive way that encourages exploration of real life. as important as this game is though, it definitely is perfect, infact it feels very unfinished even in many areas or lacking in others, but being a free game, you can only complain so much, of course it is fair to judge this game a little more harshly though due to the people working on it and it being a very anticipated pokemon game that has seen lots of coverage and had a lot of hype for a mobile game. overall the game is fun but very flawed but is a game I am very glad was made and will have a large impact on the gaming community in a very positive way.

God of War III8
Jul 12, 2016
this is an extremely entertaining game. god of war has always been known for its amazing presentation, over the top violence and extremely satisfying hack and slash gameplay, all these things still ring true for this game and then some. easily the most grand of all the god of war games and the most fun to play. the set pieces are unlike any other game as far as there scope goes, and the one thing god of war 3 does better then the previous games is make you feel as powerful as ever striking down the largest and most dangerous foes kratos has yet to face. the downside to this game is its story, while the writing isn't necessarily bad, it is really goofy and hard to take seriously, especially when compared to the previous games that felt a lot more thought out and had a much more enjoyable story that added to the experience. The story in this installment is overly simple and still manages to feel goofy and unnatural in many parts, especially when you meet Pandora. this definitely was disappointing and is the weakest as far as story goes, but strongest in gameplay. the other thing that brought the game down was the puzzles. Some of the puzzles were enjoyable but many felt unnecessary and slowed down the game to the point of annoyance. that's the only real thing wrong with the game, otherwise its an absolute thrill ride, to its incredible opening to its climatic end.

The Last of Us Remastered10
Jul 12, 2016
this is probably the best game of the last generation, and the remaster is the best version of it. when it comes to its storytelling, it has many similarities to the uncharted games, but with a much darker tone and even better writing. there is not a single moment wasted in this game, not a single time I was not immensely invested in the gameplay, story and the characters. no other game has ever had me as captivated as this game. It is full of moments in gameplay and cut scenes that I will always remember and always resonate with me, wether it be moments of extreme sorrow, horror, joy, tension, or anger. this one of the most well crafted narratives ever made, if not the most. what really brings this game home for me though is how its gameplay is equally enthralling, always tense and surprisingly engaging and deeper than the surface would suggest, I couldn't find a single flaw in the game, perhaps for a few nitpicks with how certain gameplay moments such as using a plank to bring Elli across water gets used a few times but that's really reaching. Naughty dog has made a name for itself as possibly the best game developers working today.

Call of Duty: Black Ops III5
Jun 28, 2016
this is definitely not my favorite call of duty game, but its still a good time when your playing multiplayer. it functions quite well and I like the use of classes or whatever they are called, but much like the last few games in the franchise it does very little to make itself stand out and does nothing to surprise anyone, you already know what this game is and there are plenty of first person shooters just like it out right now. some people don't even worry about the campaign in these games but since there have been some actually really good campaigns in the past like in the first two modern warfares and the first black ops I think we should get a good campaign and that we deserve one, but we don't get it once again. the one thing black ops 3 does try to put effort into is its zombie mode, its had a lot of changes to it and is overall deeper than previous zombie modes, but unfortunately I don't feel its better. I definitely prefer the older zombie modes but I do appreciate black ops trying to do something different. very generic game, but still ends up being just as addictive and fun as previous titles, but honestly I could have just as much fun or more fun playing any of the other games in the series.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain9
Jun 26, 2016
This is easily the hardest review I have ever had to write. Let me start by saying that metal gear solid 5 is definitely an incredible game, and is unlike any other game ever made and probably unlike anything that will ever be made. the gameplay is undoubtedly the strongest and most incredible part of the game. No other game uses an open world environment as a part of the gameplay as well as the phantom pain. exploring the beautiful open deserts of Afghanistan and the wet jungles and barren plains of Africa is fun but what makes the open world so great is how its terrain, weather, time of day and enemy bases placed in the world plays a huge role in how you decide to go about your missions and the enormous amount of resources and gadgets you have at your disposal gives an endless amount of gameplay styles and options while in the field. the game leaves everything up to you and does not hold your hand at all, allowing you create your own war stories unique to you. I genuinely feel that any one else who plays this game will have a completely different experience than I did when it came to how they went about completing their missions and that's pretty freaking awesome, in fact this has alot to do with the games key themes that are reveled at the end of the game, which I will not spoil for you. every mission is memorable and well directed and realized and are extremely enjoyable, until you get into the post game, which is my biggest issue of the game. unfortunately the director of the game hideo kojima did not get all the time he needed to finish the game how he intended, and the game was rushed by the publishers of the game. This left the last ten or so missions being recycled missions from earlier in the game with the difficulty of the missions being ramped up. this is extremely disappointing because the meat of the story is in these final chapters of the game and the narrative doesn't flow at all because the missions don't translate into whats going on near the end and its such a shame that we couldn't play the missions kojima could have made if he was given the time. The story of the game is the most controversial topic it seems when it comes to the game, which I wont spoil, but I will say the main story until the post missions start is pretty straight forward and easy to follow. The cut scenes are beautifully directed and the voice acting is superb, and the main story is actually quite compelling even though it doesn't have the amount of revelations and plot twists fans may have expected, but the incredibly profound ideas and themes the franchise is known for is still all there in spades, especially in the post game. The post game and ending are where people are really divided on this game, and when I played through the ending of this game, I was dumbfounded by the twist and to be honest quite angry, but after a day or two thinking about it and trying to figure out what kojima was trying to do with this ending, I ended up loving it and I feel that much like metal gear solid 2, people are going to be really upset about it for a while, but as the years go by and people think about it more, people are going to appreciate what the ending was trying to do and I think people will start seeing how incredible **** and a work of art this game is. I would love to give this game a 10 but because of the recycling of older missions by the end and how it breaks up the flow of the narrative, I cant, but I do believe this game is a masterpiece.

Jun 16, 2016
Im very surprised to see how mixed the reviews for this game are. Its not perfect, It could definitely of had more options and ways to customize loadouts and equipment, and for me the worst part of the game is its decision to make go through the ten situations before you can do multiplayer. these situations were not fun whatsoever and it took me a few hours to get through them all be for I could play the actual game. and once I got into the multiplayer, I was really bad, but I got better, and once your competent enough and learn the unusual mechanics that are quite different and much more deep than other online shooters, its really quite fantastic and easily my favorite online first person shooter I've ever played. an truly one of the first shooters where I felt communication with my team drastically affected our success. This game manages to be very fast paced and exciting while making you step back, plan your attack and coordinate with other players on the spot and requires more strategic thinking than fast reflexes. making this just as much **** of getting the upper hand on your opponent by out smarting them and overwhelming them. Im not going to go into the game mechanics because there is a lot to talk about, but basically you are trying to complete the objective or take out the other team if your attacking, or your defending and keeping the other team from completing there task. the amount of options and ways you can go about beating the other team is unlike any other game I've played and far deeper as well. really great game. would be nice if it had more content because I don't feel that this game should be priced at 80$, 60$ sounds more reasonable.

Neverending Nightmares6
Jun 10, 2016
This game is pretty good. It's not perfect but it does a lot of things right. The first thing you should know before you get this game is that it is an artistic statement on mental health and the dark emotions that go along with it, all set in a horror themed game. I really appreciated the art design, I haven't seen anything like it and fits some of the themes really well, I personally felt like every colored object I saw I had to interact with even though there are many doors in the game that lead to nowhere. I don't know if it was intentional or not but this aspect of the game really made me think of ocd and having to wake up constantly in to a new nightmare over and over again made me think of insomnia. So artistically I think the game accomplishes what it tried to do. It is also quite frightening with very disturbing imagery and atmospher although most of the tension seems to be caused by the unique art style which seems to fade away after you get used to it, but the game throws new things to be scared of as the game goes on and keeps you on your toes since you have to avoid the new enemies you see but each one has a different way of avoiding them. That's everything I really liked about the game, but unfortuently there are many place where the game falls flat. Even though I like how you have the urge to click on every door handle without the doors actually leading anywhere, once you begin to understand that, these moments loose are there tension and begin to become annoying and tedious especially when you find yourself in a room you have seen many times before. That game also feels way to short, I think I finished it within an hour. The gameplay is overly simple as well, you can walk, run and interact, that's it. It's disappointing because the game looks so cool and has a lot of interesting ideas but the gameplay just doesn't match up making it feel even duller. It's not a bad game, but it's definitely not for everyone, those who are easily scared will probably be really scared playing this game, and for those who enjoy aritsic games may appreciate this as well, but anyone in between might not get much out of it

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End10

I think this is my favorite in the series. the second game was a tighter package and slightly larger set pieces but the writing, story, and characters are better than they have ever been in uncharted 4. the set pieces and action sequences are amazing and maybe aren't as large in scale as other ones, but there is a lot more going on in these sequences and are more exciting than previous ones, thats something I didn't think was going to be achievable. these sequences were so good that during these moments I just had the hugest smile on my face. the developers added enough to keep the gameplay from getting old, a problem that I felt was present in the 3rd game. the addition of the grappling hook was awesome, nothing made me feel more badass than using it to dive bomb an enemy undetected. speaking about being undetected the option to go stealth and not attack if you wanted to was a great addition, even though it was fairly simple mechanics. Even little things like being able to double team a bad guy with the other characters when beating them down was awesome and the little side conversations you could have or not have like in the last of us were things I really appreciated and added to the emersion. despite all this, the biggest thing this game does right is the story, it is extremely emotionally investing, and I appreciate that they do this without being gloomy like so many other titles. there are so many games that try to provoke emotion by being dark and depressing that its refreshing to have a story that's actually very light hearted in tone but still hits you in the heart. not to say that aren't sad moments, this game focuses strongly on betrayal, obsession, and letting go but it still manages to keep you laughing and smiling most of the way through. I was never bored for a second, but I can see the replay value not being that strong in the first couple chapters. best villian yet in the series in my opinion because not only was the villain a complete scum bag you could also understand why he does the things he does and even empathize with him, infact hes not to different from nathan drake, they happen to have alot in common. I cant talk to much more about the gaem without going into spoiler territory so ill just say that this is easily game of the year for me so far with dark souls 3 alomost on par. the perfect uncharted game

this is possibly the best souls game yet. Its definitely the most accessible and I feel that it is probably the first souls game that anyone can get into. many of the game's functions have been simplified and make it way easier to understand. Its far less cryptic as far as its story and progression goes compared to the other games, but still leaves many elements of the lore and story up to interpretation and can be deeply read into through item descriptions and visual storytelling just like the other games. the gameplay sticks to the same formula but adds enough new stuff to keep it from getting stale like new weapons, awesome armor and battle arts. the thing that makes this game stick out among the other games is the amazing art direction and incredible boss battles. every area in this game is memorable and incredibly detailed and is the best looking souls game to date, I do prefer bloodborne's art design though. The bosses are some of the most epic fights of all the series, they really focused on making sure everyone of them stood out. there are maybe two or three bosses that maybe could have been done better but they you can tell that a lot of effort was put into them this time around. The story really works for being the last souls game, and adds a lot to the lore to the series. the only thing I found disappointing was the last boss. the fight itself was excellent, but the lore and story implements of the fight were underwhelming, Im not gonna spoil anything but I was wanting more from the final boss of the last game. this was the most disappointing last boss in all soulsborne games in terms of lore. besides that though, this game will probably be my game of the year.

Resident Evil HD Remaster9
May 26, 2016
besides resident evil 4, this is the best resident evil game. This remastered version of the remake is easily the best way to play, it's gorgeous, and makes you realize how pretty pre rendered backgrounds can be. Easily the scariest game in the franchise, the old school gameplay still managed to make me jump out of my seat and fill me with a sense of dread in every hall of the mansion. there is no reason to play the original, everything the original does is done better here and is way more accessible. you have the ability to play with the analog stick (Im not sure if that was a feature in the gamecube version or not) which is much nicer than tank controls, but if had to use them, I would be fine with it, but I know that's gonna be a make or break thing for most newcomers, for me its fine because I played a few of the original games. So even though some people may think the controls are old fashioned, I think they add to the tension and sense of vulnerability to the game and I'm sure that was the intention when the game was first released and in my opinion still works well today, in fact its quite refreshing as apposed to the saturated amount of first person horror games on the market right now. the fixed camera angle is able to achieve a different kind of horror that you simply can't do with over the shoulder or first person games. Instead of being focused on what is directly in front of you at all times, your focus dwells on the environment and makes you want to take the game slowly and cautiously, then when something happens you have to suddenly change your pace and react quickly creating these intense moments of panic. The story isn't necessarily "good" but it is charming and plenty of fun, same goes for the voice acting, even though its better than the original game, its still not great, but I wouldn't have it any other way because its really funny. the pacing is excellent, the puzzles are fun, and the gameplay is subtle yet intense the whole way through. one thing that I don't like at all is the inventory system. It adds some sense of strategy by limiting what your able to carry at one time but its more of a hassle than anything. otherwise its an awesome game with very memorable characters and moments that will stick with for a long time and maybe keep you awake at night.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves9

There are many things that make this game great that you simply can't see by viewing some gameplay footage. naughty dog does an incredible job at making the characters in this game feel human and vulnerable. They achieve this through the smallest details, for example, when you are playing as Nathan Drake in the game, those moments when you are leaping across towards a ledge off a crumbling building just to barely grab the ledge by your fingertips and have that ledge collapse and cause Nathan to swing his arms wildly to grab whatever is near by causes a sense of urgency that exists in the shoot outs and plat forming bits. and as you sit there dangling by a pole hundreds of feet from the ground you worry for Nathan's safety. the writing is so good and makes the characters feel human and real, and are so entertaining. the enormous set pieces and action sequences made me go "wow" and I can not think of another game that has done these kinds of sequences better. the gameplay is simple but works well because the enemy AI will challenge you by making you actually take good use of cover and think on the spot as they try to distract you with gunfire while there friends slowly creeping up to flank you. the plot is fun and works, but what really makes it stand out is the writing and characters. the only thing I can say bad about the game is there are moments of down time that are a little to long, I understand that there needs to be some down time but some of these sections can be a little boring and take you out of the game as you wish for a cut scene to entertain you instead of the gameplay at some of these parts, some of the puzzles feel a little unnecessary as well, but are never hard. I forgot to mention how memorable the opening sequence is, the only other opening sequence to top it is by another naughty dog game in the last of us that I can think of. love this game, but has some sections in it that really slow down the game, without those moments this game would truly be perfect.

this game gives you a lot of bang for your buck. there is so much content here that you could spend hundreds of hours playing and still have lots to discover. unfortunately you may end up finding yourself getting board before you get to that point. overall I love these kinds of games that Bethesda has been giving us along with fallout. an enormous beautiful world that you can just lose yourself in, hundreds of quest that expand upon the lore of the world and make it feel real. these are things many gamers crave but few games can satisfy. Its extremely accessible do to its simplistic but deep leveling system and first person view that makes it more appealing than traditional RPG's. but unfortunately the biggest strength of this game is also its biggest flaw. there is so much to do in this world but very little of it feels meaningful. A big reason for this is the lack of character motivation. without spoiling anything, the story evolves around you being someone very special and destined to fulfill somewhat of a prophecy, but the character has no emotional value attached to this quest, making the main quest feel just as much as a side quest as any other. There are some really cool quests in the game but there are just as many boring ones that you will find your self doing simply to gain experience. I'm not saying the story is bad, its definitely engaging enough, but the lack of an emotional connection to it can cause you to question why you are even playing when you are in the middle of a boring quest. combat isn't anything special, and will feel dull in later hours of the game, but a good thing about it is that it gives you a clear idea of what your limitations are based on your level. for example, you know if early on in the game if you see a giant, that you definitely don't want to mess with it, but will be something that you can take on eventually, and probably have a good idea of how high of a level you'll need to be to do it. Even though I found the game to get dull after about 40 hours, many other people may not have the same problem and be engaged the whole time because of the beauty of the world, and is overall a pretty great game, and I understand why it was such an enormous hit, but I don't believe it to be as great **** as people once thought now that it has been out for a while, but still a game I think is definitely worth your money, due to the amount of content you get out of it, and would say I definitely really liked it despite finding myself having to really push through the times I got bored.

great game. dark souls 2 makes a bunch of changes to the souls series, but still stays true to what makes the original great. gameplay is still challenging and rewarding and you will die ALOT. there are some things that were improved, but overall I feel that this was not quite as memorable as the original. the ability to warp to other bonfires is great, but not being able to level up at any bonfire is kind of annoying, but I wouldn't say it effects the game that much, what does effect the game though, is how the world doesn't really intertwine with itself and doesn't feel cohesive like the first game. the world it a bunch of branching paths that just end instead of weaving into each other like the first and that was a bit disappointing. another thing that was disappointing was the bosses. dark souls 2 went with a quantity over quality approach this time with the bosses and is probably the biggest flaw about this game. You get the feeling that the developers really ran out of ideas when it came to the boss designs and fights in this one, many of the fights are simple mob fights, knights in armor, and actual 100% rehashes from the first game, with that being said there are some stand out bosses that were awesome, but with about 30 bosses in the game, half felt too easy and uninspired. other wise the rest of the game is great, the added death penalty of maximum health depletion feels a bit to harsh at first, but you simply get used to it. this game definitely is a worthy sequel but is not quite as good.

bloodborne is so good. If you are new to the souls series, this is the place to start. I tried playing darksouls about 2 years ago and quit early on. I am now currently playing dark souls and am almost at the end because after beating bloodborne I now how the confidence to beat dark souls. bloodborne isn't necessarily easier in all aspects, its just more accessible and more straightforward than darksouls, most of the things that frustrated me about dark souls were how getting from one place to another could be absolutely tedious cryptic. bloodborne on the other hand is much easier to traverse but still offers a challenge that feals a lot more fair. the combat is much different and is extremely well fleshed out but wether its better or not depends on your preference for either calculated or aggressive gameplay because the combat is much faster and aggressive in bloodborne. the art design is breathtaking in this game and looks a lot different than any of the other souls games and I think is a lot more creative not to say dark souls isn't a good looking game. I could talk along time about the great things about this game but to some it up, I couldn't find a flaw in this game besides wether or not the learning curb is worth struggling through for you personally to get into it.

some things about this game were a bit disappointing, but there were also a lot of things that took me by surprise. One issue I have with this game is how the story unfolds. I was invested at first and then it took a very unexpected turn, which was clever but I think the experience would have been better if it would have stuck to the direction this game has you believe that its going, without spoiling anything there is a twist and even though it was fun I think the game went a bit too wild. The other thing I wasn't impressed by was its replay value, the developers had sad that most people will only get 50% of the experience the first time through and will imidiately want to play it again, without spoiling anything, this is simply not the case, even though there is reason to replay the game, it is not for that reason. that's really everything bad about the game, everything else is great, but one thing that really surprised me was the depth of the characters and how much I actually ended up liking them. this is a great game for those who are into games where your choices matter and those who also love horror clichés because this game embraces them in the best way possible.

the perfect ending to one of the greatest franchises of all time. I have nothing bad to say about this game it was a blast the whole way through. the only thing I will say is if you are not an invested fan of the series or are not a fan of cinematic games than you probably wont like this game because you probably spend more time watching cutscenes than you do actually playing. that's not a bad thing because the story and cinematic storytelling is the main appeal of metal gear solid games and this one just happens to be the most cinematic yet. and when you do get to play, the gameplay is nearly perfect and some of the best in the series. Stealth is not as emphasized in this game as it was in previous entries but the change to a more action orientated style of gameplay works really well and fits the story well. this is one of the best games in the franchise and is one of the best games of its generation.

this episode was able to go much farther than the last episode as far as humor and wackiness goes because it already established the plot. I loved it. the only things wrong with this episode is there is a little bit of down time that sticks out like a sore thumb and the ending that I got was abrupt, but maybe if you made another decision it would be different. I liked this episode and am still on board with the series. the only reason I like the first episode better is because it really established the tone of the game and this episode didn't really do anything new which is fine but the first episode just stands out for that reason and I think that has been the case with all of telltales games so far (except first season walking dead the second episode was probably the best)

I feel that it starts to get a little bit boring after you've gotten atleast halfway through because the story doesn't really add anything to the game and there is no variety to the gameplay besides shooting which is fine I just wish that they could of incorporated some situations that acquired you to change tactics but you pretty much just want to strafe and shoot. besides the story being only acceptable and the gameplay getting a bit old near the last bit of the game doom is a great game and I can imagine it being a big deal during its time of release

the greatest strength of this game is its art design and the options it gives you to complete your missions. this is not a completely open world game but definitely gives you lots of room to explore and it is far from linear and is one of the best stealth games I have played in a while, if you choose to play it stealthily. the only problem with that is that there are definitely some parts where stealth or fighting were a much better option but for the most part both options were even. being stealthy is harder but is much more rewarding while fighting is easier but has consequences. I like that dynamic and it is done excellently. the few problems I have were with the characters and dialogue, they were good but you could tell that they had so much potential to be soooo much better which keeps this game from reaching its potential. the game is also to short, not like it feels like it ruins the game in any way, but by the end of the game you are really wanting more unfortuently. I feel like it could have been atleast another 4 hours longer but at least there is a lot of replayability. I think if they were to make a sequel these complaints would be solved and we would have a nearly perfect game.

there is A LOT to discuss about this game so I'm just going to say right away that this game is hella fun, and if you liked resident evil 4 than you will definitely like this game as far as gameplay goes anyway. there are definitely some things that this game does wrong, but there is a lot of things that this game does right too. the two big things that are wrong with this game are its flat characters and its overly ambitious story. the characters in the game really aren't interesting or well voice acted at all, but because this game's strength is primarily focused on gameplay, this issue hardly bothered me, what did bug me a little was the story though. I'm not going to spoil anything but for the first have of the game, I was compelled by the mystery and the concept of the plot but by the second half was confused and underwhelmed by the lack of good story telling, but after piecing the story together I have come to like the over all story but I don't like how they chose to tell it. the great thing about this game is that it is remarkably fun. if I was to sum up the game, It is like resident evil 4 mixed with psychological horror aspects like silent hill with much more gore and incredible atmosphere. this game is not quite as good as res4 or silent hill (at least the first two) but it has a similar quality. I can see why people were disappointed by this game, the developers had hinted that the story was going to be one of the main assets to the game but in the end it was mediocre to some and terrible to most others. but to me I can see the positive and intriguing aspects of the plot after taking some time to interoperate it and the flat characters to me makes it feel more welcoming to put my self in the story instead viewing it from my characters point of view making it more immersive, to make it clear I'm not defending the games faults I'm just saying it didn't really bother me so much because the rest of the game was so great. It was challenging and felt very satisfied when I overcame those challenges, the gameplay was awesome, and the letter box camera may have been a little annoying at first, but I got used to it and loved how cinematic it made the game look and create a limited view for further challenge and scares, and if you have a problem with that then you really shouldn't be playing a SURVIVAL HORROR game, it is not suppose to be easy and setting limitations is a very classic survival horror method to creating a greater challenge (fixed camera angels in early resident evil titles). It is not perfect but I really do love this game and was completely satisfied with it

Alien: Isolation8
Dec 8, 2014
alien isolation is a very unique experience and I think that's the best word to use to describe this game, an experience. one of the most immersive games I have ever played, and is genuinely frightening at least for the first half of the game, and then often the challenge of the game over takes the horror sometimes, which is ok because I enjoyed the challenge, but unfortunately there is not enough variation to hold the frightening tension through this surprisingly long game. the thing that this game does best though is that it truly recreates the atmosphere and setting of the first alien movie to perfection. the AI of the alien has been fine tuned to near perfection, but the humans in the game frustrated me a little bit. in the game tips are given during loading screens stating that some people on the ship will leave you alone if you back off, but never have I had a person not try to kill me after they have seen even when I tried walking away from them, so I feel that the people could have had a bit more work done on them. the ending of the game wasn't anything special infact it was a little underwhelming considering how grand and climatic the game had been so far. the characters are pretty well lifeless except for your character Amanda ripley, who ever did her voice acting did a really good job in my opinion, because I felt I was really able to empathize with her fear and other emotions. there is a lot to say about this game but in the end I found that this game is definitely worth playing especially if you are a fan of the alien franchise.

this game is outstanding! shadow of the colossus is one of the greatest games on the playstation 2, close competitors would be the metal gear solid games and god of war (in my opinion). if not the best game, definitely the most beautiful and unique. the concept of having only boss fights and no other enemies in the game is pretty risky, but it totally works in this game. the story is unique as well, it is told very simply and has very little dialogue but has a deep meaning, and its very appealing. the only gripe I have is that it is pretty hard to die in this game. the game isn't easy, but any time I died it was not during a battle, I accidently rolled off a cliff or something. after you get over the height and size of the colossus, you soon realize that its not really that big of a threat since they hardly attack and do very little damage when they do hurt you and your health recharges. Figuring out how to kill the thing is the hard part and the most enjoyable part of the game. the other gripe I have is that the camera can be a bit irritating and can take you out of the game a little bit otherwise this game is awsome

I see the negatives, and I agree that this episode was a little shorter, and had fewer emotional or intense dialogue choices, but this episode played with a good theme that I really enjoyed and made bigby's character feel more human than ever, friendship. this episode touched back on the characters that truly seem to understand bigby and like him for who he is, such as Collin, and I'm thinking even Merissa. I really liked that element to this episode. I also like that they really focused on brining all the pieces of the plot together which I think the game needed. If they had to focus on plot this time around instead of dialogue choices, that's totally fine with me and I enjoyed this episode for that. I do strongly agree that the episode could have been another half an hour longer or so

so much detail was put into this game to appeal to every sense of fear a person has. the atmosphere is chilling and dark, no where feels safe and when you have to run, you do not want to look back. I don't know what makes the monsters so scary, but let me tell you, playing the game and watching a video on youtube is a totally different story. I don't think its the scariest game I've ever played, but definitely the most consistently scary, there is not a second in this game where I was just able to run down a hall all willy nilly without checking behind my back. the story is quite creative, but just isn't portrayed in the most appealing way, I never wanted to read any of the notes or journal writings after the first two or so, which unfortunately are sometimes needed to figure certain puzzles. although I did feel scared when nothing was actually happening... there still wasn't anything happening, which made some of the places that are free of monsters feel pretty boring, but the parts where there are monsters totally make up for it. a must play game for any horror or pc gamers, you will not be disappointed, it is very short though, took me just over 4 in a half hours to beat

lets start with the negatives and just get them out of the way. because this game was the follow up to heavy rain, we all expected that our choices would have a tremendous role in the story and the ending, unfortunately that is not the case, you do get to make decisions that have immediate effects at the moment, but does change the story at all, huge bummer and a real let down. second negative, some scenes are quite boring and could care less about. now here is everything great about the game, the story is pretty damn good, and very original. the voice acting is some of the best I've ever heard in a game before, and if you don't already know its because the main characters in the game are voiced by ellen page and Wilhelm Dafoe (don't know if I spelt that right) very talented actors. I said that some scenes are boring but the majority of the scenes are so amazing and a lot of them are surprisingly relatable. one thing I think this game did better than heavy rain at was capturing the emotion of the protagonist, now to be fair, heavy rain had four characters that the developers had to focus on while this time around they had one, so it should be expected. I can not say this game is amazing because of the amount of flaws present, but when the game gets it right, it is so emotional and gripping that is so memorable it will make you question your view of life, it is spectacular and makes up for so much more than what people are giving this game credit for. I don't think of this game as a disappointment at all, it is a totally different game than heavy rain, which I think where most of its negativity comes from. you cant compare the two games because they are in reality very different and unique from each other although the gameplay is the similar. and one more, the ending is amazing (in my opinion) despite that it cant really be changed, it is the most thought provoking scene I have ever seen, it kept me thinking for days to come. the ending truly shows how games now a days can actually be considered art

Star Fox Adventures6

this is not the game starfox fans were wanting, but is definitely not a bad game. the game looks quite good for its time and has beautiful design. I love the fact that this game has dinosaurs in general, which may be a bit biased but hey, what was the last game that you played with dinosaurs huh? dinosaurs are freakin cool. this game can come off a bit weird and doesn't quite feel like a starfox game at all really, but its still fun none the less, nothing totally special though

The Walking Dead: Season Two Episode 3 - In Harm's Way8
May 15, 2014
this episode hit all the right notes and I hope future episodes follow the same chemistry. less walking around and solving tedious puzzles and more of what the game is really about, the characters and your interaction with them. the title of this episode totally explains the focus, wether or not to put yourself at risk for the people you care about, there wasn's a specific moment that made this episode particularily memorable besides maybe the last ten minutes, not to say the rest was boring, infact quite the opposite, It kept the same tone the whole way through, its just that the scenes were I was shocked at first made future scenes a little bit more predictable than they should of been, not going to spoil anything. but this episode was freakin awesome none the less of course, and I am very eager for the next one

Outlast: Whistleblower7

this dlc was just more outlast, which isn't a bad thing at all in my opinion. there were a few new environments and the story in the dlc was a little bit more interesting and a few of the new characters you are trying to escape from are very disturbing. there were a few things that were a bit negative like the fact that you are running more than hiding which takes away some of the tension and that the ending isn't all that satisfying just like the first one, but hey if you liked out last you will definitely like this dlc

this game has an interesting concept of that the game is only as violent as you are, but fails miserably at following through with that statement. it encourages you to proceed in violent activities that loose their fun quite quickly and the textures look unappealing. there is a lot of things wrong with this game and I could not play it any longer than an hour before I realized this was a total waste of time. the only reason this game is worth playing is to see how controversial this game can get and how many obsurd and disturbing ways you can kill the npcs. It try's to be funny but fails at that as well. no matter what this games price goes for, it really isn't worth the money, I would have more fun playing sonic 06

Ape Escape7

the title and premise sounds goofy, but it is so much fun. basically you are trying to capture monkeys that have escaped through a time machine to take over mankind as the new dominant race by having them take over every major period in time starting from the dinosaur ages to modern day. lots of gizmos and gadgets to use, fun and interesting stages for the most part, and a very original and unique experience can be found in this game. there are a few flaws in some of the stage designs that can make the game quite frustrating at times, but doesn't subtract much from everything that is so fun from the game. the game feels like it drags on though, and although you get new items and such through out the game, it feels like your still just doing the same thing from the very first stage. Its not repetitive exactly, it just feels like that even though the environments are new, you don't feel like you moved on to the next stage. the game is definitely worth a play through for sure despite the negatives

Outlast8

this game is terrifying. it does so many things right in terms of giving you the best horror experience you can get, but fails in adding any variety to the games settings, and the story is interesting, but clichéd and starts to feel more and more unnecessary as the game progresses. but with all that being said it is one of a kind, you could compare the game's style and gameplay to Amnesia the Dark Descent, I like to think of Outlast as a modern day Amnesia with its own distinguished atmosphere. The thing I like the most about this game though is the camera, which is also similar to Amnesia's lantern in its use. you use the video camera to see in the dark using its nigh vision light thing just like you would see in a found footage film, and that's what makes this game so cool, because it makes you feel like you are in one of those movies. its a great touch that really makes outlast stand out as a creative and very scary horror game
