The first game in quite some time that captures the feeling the old Sonic games gave you. It’s very fast and has pretty big levels with multiple routes through them.

Though it still exhibits many of the camera and control issues that vexed Sonic's previous forays into 3D, it's truer to its 2D roots than any other 3D Sonic game before it.

The concept is well and good, and works well – except for the fact that you still must slow down to use Knuckles and Tails (or the equivalent member in one of the three other teams in the game). These are the moments that the game truly lags, and once again the shoddy camera has come back to once again make the game a pain.

But with this much constant repetition, sloppy enemy and level designs, artificially-prescribed deaths, lack of bonus GBA-connectivity and even some glitchy overlapping voice samples, it's really a matter of how much the player is prepared to tolerate.

Sonic Heroes takes a simple concept and makes it complex seemingly for the sake of complexity, and the result is an overly frustrating game that feels more like work than fun.

So far pretty mediocre. But i'll get through it and then I will edit this review to show my true feelings.

I am honestly not sure why this game is so positively rated and rated pretty well within the community, but I've only had unpleasant experiences with this game. I decided to play Sonic Heroes because I wanted to play through the 3D Sonic games, but I ended up not liking the game very much. In fact, I had the least amount of fun playing this game compared to any other Sonic game I've played including Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic x Shadow Generations, Sonic Mania Plus, Sonic Forces, and Sonic Frontiers. I don't like the sensitive, slippery controls (I've died many times due to this by falling off stages), the camera movement is very awkward and I often have to manually correct it, the stages are very long and repetitive, the bosses are confusing, don't seem to work as intended, and two of them are just hordes of enemies, the team battles feel RNG based (as if I am waiting for everyone on the opposing team to fall off the stage), the story is not as engaging as previous Sonic games (notably SA1 and SA2), and from my knowledge, there's little to no character variety with the four team story campaigns so it would almost feel like replaying the game 4 times, and playing through all four story campaigns is not enough to unlock the last story as I would need to additionally complete the seemingly tedious and difficult special stages to 100% complete the game which seems like a chore. I don't want to continue playing this game after I beat the Team Sonic story campaign, and I am at the last stage. The only thing I can compliment is the music, which even then I don't rate very high compared to other soundtracks in the franchise. Overall, it seems like what was cool in concept such as the stages and content built around the 4 teams did not translate as well in execution for me. I can see the potential this game had. If the requirement for reaching the last story wasn't so demanding, if the stages were shorter and less repetitive, if the bosses were more fun and engaging, if the camera movement wasn't so awkward, had there been more variety with the 4 story campaigns, and if controls weren't so sensitive and felt like I was ice skating all the time, then maybe I would've been more satisfied with the time I spent playing Sonic Heroes. I was looking forward to playing this game, and I really wanted to like it, but all I got from it was a frustrating and disappointing experience.

Not that fun, and playing the same game 4 times with very slight changes feels more like a chore than anything else really. Bad game.
