The main downfall comes with the closing areas of the game; they seem rushed and are indicative of the sale of Rare to Microsoft, but don't let that prevent you from thoroughly enjoying one of the best videogames of this year.

Takes its inspiration from "The Legend of Zelda" - and that ain't bad. [Feb 2003, p.96]

It lacks tension (combat is totally one-sided), set pieces (there are two whole bosses in the entire game), a gripping story (Krystal's kidnapped, you rescue Spirits, you fight General Scales), and any of the myriad different things that the game it principally tries to emulate (Zelda) was so famous for.

Plays like a direct descendant of "Ocarina of Time;" it's a fun, fast-paced adventure, packed to the brim with interesting puzzles and exciting action sequences. [Nov 2002, p.46]

Offers just enough variety and story to keep you hanging until its early end. [GamesMaster]

The entire adventure lasts anywhere from 18 - 25 hours + depending on your abilities and in todays market that's a decent bang for your gaming dollar.

As a Star Fox title, it is disappointing, as the flying sequences are little more than filler in between routine planetary adventures... [but it's] worth the price of admission alone just to see the lush environments and astounding special effects.

There are a couple of very ingenious puzzles, but these are few and far between. Often you find yourself wishing you had to do something more interesting, as the game gets repetitive.

Such an amazing game, so ahead of its time for the gamecube. Amazing graphics that have ages well. Cant wait to replay it again when it eventually comes to Nintendo Switch 2 online expansion pack.

Instead of creating a new Star Fox game, Rare seemed content to try and ape Ocarina Of Time making for a pretty but generic third person platform adventure with half-hearted shooting sections tacked on. It's fine for what it is - more Ratchet & Clank than Lylat Wars - but it will disappoint fans of the original franchise.

This game is terrible, and I'm not saying this in the context of being a good Starfox game, but this game fails at being a good Zelda game/clone. I have no idea how Rare could drop the ball on this one. The whole game consists of doing boring fetch quests but without the interesting scenarios or an absorbing story. To be honest Rare was never really good at storytelling, but the gameplay was usually top tier. This game however feels like an early draft **** without the polish. The combat system is as inspired as a Track&Field level. They should have dropped the puzzles altogether since they don't require skill. None of it ever feels like an accomplishment, not even the boss fights. Most of this stuff feels like blowing the game up so it 'feels' as if you spent a lot of time doing something. For example just getting from one planet to the other requires to pass a classic Starfox level. But the problem is after the third time it's clear that it's just the same level over and over again, it's stuff like this which makes the game tedious and grating. The game is also riddled with terrible level design since it's not clear where to go next, there's a lot of backtracking or backtracking by mistake. The map feels totally useless in that regard, since it's always too small and there isn't a good zoom function or full-screen view. It's one of many frustrating details. Compared to Ocarina of Time it also feels very linear. You never have the urge to explore the worlds, since they are very small and lackluster in design.
SummaryGeneral Scales has unleashed powers that are tearing apart the once-peaceful Dinosaur Planet. With the survival of his home planet at risk, Fox McCloud receives an urgent message to battle Scales and his vast army of SharpClaws. As Fox, you'll gain support from Star Fox Team members Slippy, Peppy, and Rob. You must rely on the mystical p... Read More
