Not only were my fears of the roguelite loop unfounded, but the Burnout roots baked into developer Fuse Games’s DNA was joyously evident in every moment I spent on the track with Star Wars: Galactic Racer. And the times I wasn’t going hundreds of miles per hour when I was on foot did a great job of further Star Wars-ifying my experience. After spending an hour and a half with Star Wars: Galactic Racer, I was eager to immediately get back to speeding across the glaciers of Ando Prime and through the canyons of Mos Espa. Fuse Games’ experience in the racing genre shines through, resulting in a title that appeals not only to Star Wars fans but to anyone who loves high-speed racing. The races are furious and adrenaline-fueled, the track design is fiendish yet surprising, and the roguelike-style story mode offers an intriguing way to play and replay the campaign—experimenting with different builds while unlocking new challenges, abilities, and customization options. Questions remain regarding the actual volume of content: while the roguelike structure extends the campaign and boosts replayability, just how many tracks, planets, and challenges will the final game include? This is not to be confused with Burnout Paradise, since Galactic Racer isn’t an open-world racing game. But the takedowns themselves feel pure Burnout, albeit with speeders and speederbikes and swoops instead of cars and motorcycles and trucks. [Hands-On Impressions]
