Far Cry 410
Dec 18, 2017
I've just re-played Far Cry 3 and Far Cry 4 again right after each other and I can tell you now (in my opinion) that Far Cry 4 as an action-oriented experience is by far better than Far Cry 3 and it looks a hell of a lot better too. From the graphics to the UI they improved on 3 by quite some! What you might like: * A lot of activities to play around in, many optional unless you have to have absolutely every weapon in the game. * Unexpected world events that will sometimes make you laugh (and cry at other times when things don't go in your favour) * Co-op, user created maps (some of the outposts are absolutely brilliant), varied gameplay elements that round it up just beautifully (standard races, "danger" races as I call them that have you race in dangerous conditions all while switching vehicles to keep the adrenaline pumping), arena combat pitting you against NPC's and wild animals (and against each other), etc. * Some fun sequences that will mix things up in areas that look and behave differently to the standard game world... What you might not like: * Some appear to dislike the story enough to give it a fairly low rating. Sure it's not the best story I've encountered in a game but I honestly don't have it weigh as heavily as the other elements that make a game fun. * There are still un-skippable cut-scenes in this one and even after letting a few years pass between replays I found them rather annoying to have to sit through again when I just wanted to get on with the action. * A world littered with collectables. This can get pretty long in the tooth having all of these little icons just prompting you to collect them especially when combined with the hunting required to upgrade some vital elements (more weapons, more ammo, larger backpack to carry around stuff, etc.). Conclusion: * It's a fun game that I've had an absolute blast re-playing again especially while waiting for Far Cry 5. Sure nothing will ever make me pre-order a game ever again but this one will be watched very closely after release to see how the review scores pan out.

The Evil Within 26
Nov 13, 2017
It's, okay: I enjoyed the start of the game more than I expected to, the middle-portion started to wane quite a bit and by the end I had started to get bored with it. Initially it had a bit of a Silent Hill 2 feel to it (I never did play the first Silent Hill) and I was hoping that it would open up in the same way with exploring various areas and finding out via "brute force" where you could or couldn't go. Sadly TEW2 instead have me a lot of "points of interest" that turned out to not actually be that interesting. The weapon and character customization are pretty cool however the lack of weapons and actual "abilities" made this all feel sort of tacked on. I ended up with an over-powered pistol that left me hardly ever using my shotgun or crossbow; fun for an experiment but too cumbersome to bother with unless you like counting your steps between doorways. Another thing that started to really annoy me was the slowed down pace at many points...I'd just had an adrenaline-fueled shootout or encounter and then I was forced into a slowed down walk to a gate, a jump to an alternate "alternate" reality that did nothing but frustrate me (because why slow down the action so quickly to almost halt it entirely)... It tries to be a lot of things but fails to actually master any of them. At one point an AI enemy ran away from me but forced my character to move very slowly (appeared like lag) until it had exited the **** what now? Nothing really scared me either so while it does have some really nasty looking subjects I really almost felt as if I was in a cheap horror movie more than something making me want to run away. Your character will almost always start with saying "What the hell...". It gets stale really quickly. Anyway enough with this review. It was okay but not worth picking up at full price and if you're okay with everything I've mentioned above then you'll probably enjoy portions of it as I did but at the same time don't expect it to be all fun and games.

I had a great time with this one and while I normally don't play games for too long in one sitting anymore these days with this one the further I got the longer I had to play with each sitting (just one more sequence, just one more level...). Very little doubt the story is going to not fit with everyone but there are two things you need to realize when playing: - It's an alternate reality - It's a friekin' game, enjoy it for what it is and if the cut-scenes and story upset you then good news: most of them can be skipped! So don't get your panties in a bunch like a lot of others appear to have you'll get: - A wonderful game that ran smooth as silk for me. A lot of reviews seem to suggest otherwise so I might just have been lucky (hell I never even bothered updating my graphics drivers lol). - Excellent gun-play - Weapon customisation and a perk system that rewards your particular play style - Some really gorgeous looking levels - Decent challenging FPS experience that forces you to react quickly making it an adrenaline fueled delight to work your way through.

Spent a good few hours with it now and it does have that tiny bit of appeal that just wants to you keep going, just one more little discovery here and there before I leave the planet or even think about moving onto another system. Runs just okay (I have fairly old hardware but not ancient) however for what it is I'd have expected better personally (I mean Ark: Survival evolved runs a lot better than this at twice the resolution lol) while being 10 times prettier and with probably 100 times more colours in its palette). It sure isn't going to win any princess awards but that isn't to say it's ugly but at best it's maybe the average girl you knew at school. In playing it though I found it was a lot more involved than what I thought it would be in some areas while also not being very deep or as engaging as I had hoped for in others. The ships handle like crap forcing you upwards if you dare aim too high (no mofo, I don't wanna leave the planet just yet) and also preventing you from just hovering around at stand still when you're actually just wanting to scout specific areas on a planet (this works okay once in space though). The inventory management is just pretty awful with UI that shifts beneath your movements (I'm using a mouse but I believe it's true of all control versions) and if you're comparing ships with large inventories (and then trying to move stuff across) it just cuts off a bunch on the sides. Another minor issue is that I constantly get a reminder to redeem my pre-order DLC for a ship that is far worse than the one I have now (I just didn't want any special bonuses at start you see). Overall though I've enjoyed some bits and found that perhaps like others I had just gone in with unrealistic expectations. This would have been okay with it coming it at half of it's current asking price but at a full priced AAA game I feel it's just a pure cash grab primarily driven with Sony being at the back door (as usual) pushing it far more than it deserved to be. The FOV settings don't actually give you the angle that you expect so instead you'll have to resort to editing one of the config files if you want anything that closely even resembles what should be standard on PC (i.e. I set mine at 125 which is probably closer to 90). Having to hold in your action button (left click) to change settings is also just stupid - I'm okay with this for the in game activation stuff but on the settings screen when you first start it's absolutely stupid. The map just **** too. So you move your mouse along to the path to highlight a direction and if you move too much before you know it it'll have jumped along to the next system again in that path (so very obviously created primarily with a controller in mind). A neat sort of little trick I found was sprinting and then using the jetpack just before you run out of stamina...jetpack in bursts (while at the same speed that you were running at) to keep from getting to high and then just as you land toggle the sprint again. Still awfully slow if you've wondered too far from your ship and that's probably one of the things that helped for the boredom to set it quicker than what it should. Blah blah blah I've gone on too long. It's okay to mess around with and maybe it'll get better later on but right now it's no where near worth the current asking price.

As a fan of Limbo I knew I had to play this. It looks great and plays in almost the same way with one or two extra little features that set it apart all while also being a tad nicer to look at when compared to Limbo. You control a little boy through an environment moving along and solving a few puzzles here and there to allow you to continue on your quest "to the right". This journey is completed in a mostly dark environment that fills you with all sorts of questions as you progress: How did I get here? Where am I supposed to go and why am I supposed to get there? Why are those people and "things" chasing me? Am I meant to be "absorbed" or "assimilated"? etc. Fret not my dear friend as almost none of these questions will be answered and that is probably this games biggest fault. In addition it's also quite an expensive experience (for what you get in my personal opinion) as in before you know it you'll have completed the game and you'll also most likely be left with more questions than answers. There are perhaps one or two puzzles that are decent enough for you to not instantly figure out however others will just ensure that you back track a bit to make sure you have all of the pieces. There is also a hidden set of most optional bits (I'm trying to not give away anything here) that will unlock a secret "ending". Overall it was a fun experience and I'm glad I got to enjoy it however I was also left slightly empty afterwards especially knowing that I'd have to wait a good few months to possibly a year or two to make it viable for a second play through. In the end I was just left wishing that I'd rather just ignored it until it had gotten cheaper as it just didn't feel as if I had gotten my values worth. Buy it if you really, really really loved Limbo and you want more of the same thing and don't mind the current asking price otherwise wishlist it and pick it up with a discount a while later on down the line. 7/10 hurt mostly by it's very short playtime, limited replay value (it really is going to be almost identical to your first play perhaps with one or two additional secrets discovered here and there) and finally leaving you with more questions than answers after completion.

It's an okay game (not AWESOME but also not CRAP). I had a bit of fun with it and while it was a tad bland in places it at least had a few decent puzzle sections and it held my attention for long enough to eventually finish it. Is it something I plan on re-playing again (as I have done quite a few times with something like Portal 2)? No. I do wonder about the outcome when given a choice near the end but not enough to actually re-play it through again (so instead un-installed to re-claim space for my next Portal 2 download an re-play again lol). - Performance wise my PC had no issues running the game however I did get choppy sound quite a bit (which they may or may not have resolved at this point in time, couldn't bother to check if they've actually fixed it because I'm kinda done with it now - just too much other stuff to play) but at least it wasn't enough to prevent me from playing. I do wish they'd rather have implemented named saves so that I could re-try the last portion again without having to start from scratch but other than that it worked fairly well. I give it an acceptable 6.5 (rounded up to 7) out of 10 overall.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor10
Oct 25, 2014
I enjoyed this quite a bit. I got frustrated, I died (which is why I got frustrated), I smiled and I just had a pretty good time playing through Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor. Does it have similarities to Assassin's Creed and the Batman Arkham games? Sure it does. Does this make it a bad thing? Not in my opinion. The combat, while familiar, was more challenging than in the Assassin's Creed games. You gain runes, you gain points and power that allow you to gain and upgrade various abilities that make it more fun to keep playing on all while getting that same enjoyable feeling of kicking Orc butt along the way. The story missions were varied enough to keep me playing through together with a few side bits that allowed my Ranger to get stronger and for me to test my skills while doing so between the main story missions. Overall I was impressed and I would recommend this to anyone that enjoys a bit of fun however I also know that not everyone will enjoy the combat system like many of us do (just as we may not enjoy some of the things that make your favourite games fun to play) so make sure it's your cup of tea and if it is you're most likely going to have the same fun playing through this as I did.

Pretty enjoyable and a nice title to pick up for those moments that you have spare (10-15 minute stretches are perfect however you can play for half an hour to an hour and still be entertained). I'm a big fan of Limbo (probably completed it at least four times at this point) and there is no denying that this reminds you of it from the get go. My favourite thing about it: It reminded me of Limbo and it had one or two puzzles that had me think just a bit to get through them. The "chase" sequences were alright however I honestly prefer puzzles with timed bits in them as opposed to having to outrun things even though they are essentially the same things. My least favourite thing about it: It was just too friekin' dark even with my monitor and in-game settings cranked up to FULL (and it was so dark at times that I could not see the environment in order to figure out WTF I was supposed to do). Thanks to SweetFX I was able to get it to a brightness that not only allowed me to see everything but also made it look far far prettier than it had in my first hour or so. Very nice find and I'm glad to have played it as opposed to not having known about it at all (however these games aren't for everyone if you don't enjoy puzzle games at all)

Let us just cut to the chase shall we? It's a fun game and it has a huge amount of potential however in it's current state it is extremely buggy, extremely laggy on nearly every server I've played it on and ultimately it appears to have some serious networking problems and/or memory leaks server-side because none of the servers that I have played on have been able to handle a continuous play session of too **** coming back day after day just has some serious pains with making it even slower. The boars, chickens and deer start to "skip". Other players start to "skip". Zombies "skip". It's not all entirely bad - I've had a huge amount of fun with this already however I do have some long term concerns: - I'm concerned that they may not be able to weed out all of the hacking that really affects the fun in the game. - Will they be able to create a stable bit of server software that is rock-sold to allow for weeks and weeks of server time without requiring a new map to be created (effectively scrapping any progress you may have made). - Is their vision perhaps focused a little too much on putting their/the communities ideas into place without maybe taking a step back now (before it's too late) to rather re-engineer parts of the game that are just too week at this point in time (sometimes you just can't fix something if it has a crappy foundation). Either way I really do hope that they can pull it off - it has so much potential: -I dream of PVE day-time servers with PVP night-times (or mixes of the two). The worst thing about this game is starting fresh on a server only to be hacked for your med-kit and torch on sight. -The ideas I have of custom servers and the potential of mods to really blow this out of the water are just awesome - let us hope that they focus more on the securing the game from hackers and allowing some really awesome modding functionality in the long term for where they will inevitably fall short. -My imagination runs wild with the crafting possibilities in something that doesn't look as ugly as Minecraft **** a little more of a "I'm in real danger now" feeling to it too. TL:DR Lots of fun but sadly just not worth investing too much time into right now and after several days of play time all I can say is that you should give it at least a few months before even looking into it. I do plan to update this again as they progress **** here's holding thumbs! Now if you're bored and you want to try something new (knowing that your progress will be reset and that these guys are at least 6 months away from something stable if it comes - well in my opinion) then give it a go. Personally I'd have preferred a $9.99 entry point in it's current **** yeah early access is "the thing" so what can we do?

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag6
Dec 2, 2013
Being a fan of AC2 and brotherhood I'd been rather let down with anything that followed and even with the over-hyped AC3 I got seriously burnt. I then **** the Black Flag reviews and in general it all seemed to point out that they'd corrected their flaws and gone back a little to their roots. Is it true you ask? Well yes for some bits and **** for the most part. AC2 had you really involved and it made sure that you had to do a little more than just "point and shoot" so to speak. Black Flag comes along and introduces us to some more intensive ship control and ship battles that really do feel pretty good to take part in initially. Soon though you do feel that this "pirate-battle-ship-thing" is a bit flat and it starts to get quite boring pretty quickly so it's sad that it has such a huge focus in the game because it really stops being fun after the first two hours or so. Platforming it's just gone I'm sad to say. Every bit of navigation required now is only made more difficult by figuring out which bit of the map it is that you have to navigate around everything in-between that is just pointing and holding down the shift key to get there (and then sometimes you just can't "disconnect" because you've become a sticky monkey to anything that is not at ground level). It's fun right in the beginning but then you soon start to realise that there is actually no challenge to doing any of it. Combat: Pretty much nothing new here boring and as easy as ever (in fact it felt even easier this time around). Sure, you'll have to dodge a few grenades, counter (feels very much like Batmans counter-moves) and break defenses by using a key press...rather un-rewarding in the end especially when you know that a monkey could pull off the same moves. Once again I'm left rather disappointed (and I haven't even touched on the "future" bits that feel about as fun to play as just watching a clip of someone else play the game...hell even that would have been more fun!) and after having played through the somewhat long and fairly boring story I just didn't feel anything special about this game (I actually had to force myself to keep playing through it and all the time I kept thinking "maybe I should just re-install and play through AC2 or AC:Brotherhood again instead). With promises of an upgrade system similar to Far Cry 3 (sure, it's mostly true but pretty much damn boring and not very much required) and the usual "hunt" for collectables being slapped in there I eventually stopped because the game just become sooo long in the tooth. Ah well I guess I should have realised this after revelations that the game has just been effectively dumbed down to a more simplistic experience that what we were introduced to before in the previous titles...maybe I'm just getting old or maybe I'm just trying to expect too much when consoles dominate so heavily. My conclusion: if you loved AC2/Brotherhood and despised AC3/Revelations then give this one a skip. In the end this one looks pretty and plays fairly nicely with my PC hardware yet in the end it just feels overly simplified and too heavily story-focused without really giving too much of a damn about game-play.

Sep 11, 2013
I've been super excited for this game for a long time now...sadly it was just barely a game (at least this time we could interact a little unlike with the Chinese Rooms Dear Esther) and instead felt more like an interactive story with bits of horror if you could even call them that (what the hell happened to having an enjoyable fun experience like one normally does in games with challenging puzzles and mechanics that force you to move carefully, use resources sparingly and to crap in your pants at the slightest shadow flicker in the distance?). I would seriously rather recommend that you replay Amnesia: The Dark Descent instead of buying this especially at full price.

Pretty fun experience overall and a more enjoyable storyline than Wings of Liberty. The cut-scenes are spectacular as usual (unlike some of those crappy ones embedded in WoW these days) and the units, upgrades, etc. all feel very nice. This expansion includes some Evolution missions that serve as tutorials for using your units and that then later give you the choice of selecting a "specialisation" for them as you progress through the SP campaign. Negative bits are here though so I'll list them: - Far too easy on Normal (especially when compared to Wings of Liberty) - Silly "noob" options enabled by default (i.e. not being able to select your enemy/non-playable units to see their health, constant reminders of "an optimal number of units to mine gas is 3", etc.)...just like Diablo III's elective mode being hidden away. - Too linear and short I can accept the linear because I don't expect an RPG and the "too short" bits could have been fixed with a more challenging experience when playing normal (really Normal feels more like Casual with sunglasses). I can't comment on mutli-player because I don't care about it (well I used to enjoy LAN with friends and family but the online lag pauses piss me off now even when playing in the same room). Conclusion: Enjoyable experience but just not quite worth the price if you're only into the Single Player campaign.

L.A. Noire: The Complete Edition10
Apr 9, 2012
Fantastic game - a very big shock to find myself enjoying it as much as I did - I was pleasantly surprised. Â
Sure it may not have a lot to do in the very large open world that it includes but the story itself more then makes up for that. I did realise that I'm not as great a detective as I thought I would be though! Â
Performance wise I'm not sure if I'm just lucky but I was running it on my rather old GTX295 without any performance hassles (at 1920x1200 with 2x Anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering with everything set at Quality settings) that I could notice. The cars physics are a little off at times and on the rare occasion I had a car vanish in traffic right in front of my eyes (perhaps I should lay off the whisky?). Â
Controls were fine on PC and the overall I never had any crashes, freezes or any other silly things so I can't complain. Â
A fantastic gem **** that I had put off for so long - if you enjoy solving riddles and something a little deeper than the "gun down Mr X, Pop Mr Y" then you'll love L.A. Noire!

Pretty decent game overall and quite a bit more challenging that I had originally expected. The third person movement and almost auto-aim still seems to simplify things a little but at the same time they're not shy to swarm you with bad guys so I guess without going FPS style they've done a pretty good job. Â
Auto health regeneration but with a nice added twist over the usual "just take cover and you'll be fine" bit was welcomed! Otherwise there's a lot of exploring that prevents it from becoming "slit your wrist" linear it does it's job nicely while looking pretty sweet too. As a survival horror it's okay to good (sorry I think Amnesia set a really high bar) while as a game it's fairly fun to play through (I actually wanted to finish it unlike so many other games that I just got super bored with). Â
Performance wise it runs like a charm on my aging GTX295 at 1920 x 1200 (yeah baby!) so nothing to complain about there (shame on bigger devs for failing in this department with so many of their ports that look like crap compared to this). Â
So what's not to like with this game? Well sadly (even though Remedy has done a bang up job at this PC version as so many other Devs seem to fail at when porting to PC) it still plays like a console game and I just can't help shake that 3rd person "must play with console controller" feel it has going for it (I'd love for them to do an FPS style survival horror game made specifically for PC but I fear their console monetary rewards will prevent something like **** least we got this one on PC finally too!).

Dec 3, 2011
Played only a portion of this on PC now (a little over 15% - I have tried it on the console prior to the PC release) and while one would think the controller would make it better for something 3rd person like Batman AC I'd have to disagree: the mouse and keyboard are actually a pleasure to play with apart from having to double-tap some of the keys to quickfire (but luckily these can be customised and a few quick shortcuts can be created for your favourites). The AR missions were a breeze using the Keyboard/Mouse when compared to the PS3 controller! It looks far better on PC too (I only have a GTX295 so DX11 is a no go for me anyway). Only real issues so far are 1) the long startup time when initially firing it up, 2) GFWL (although so far it hasn't lost any of my saves in quite a while unlike with Arkham Asylum), 3) having to keep my disc in the tray (luckily there was a "community" patch to fix that ****'s bad enough I didn't get a proper case with my CE but I guess the book will keep it sort of safe) and 4) having to wait so damn long after the console release (it's true - having played it a little on console before the PC release didn't help my thirst).

Small bits of fun here and there but overall a very shallow experience in a large world that boxes you in (look at this gap - I can **** I guess I can't...look at that I'll be able to **** I guess I can't go there either). Graphics need tweaking (although by now people will say "DUH!") but once it's tweaked it does look very pretty. I just couldn't get attached to any of the characters in game as they were pretty boring (and lifeless too - not convincing enough to make me care at all about what I was doing...although it's not like I had any choices anyway) and I didn't find much of a story to write home about (actually not much of a story to do anything with). It's a shame that this will most likely be my last ever id/bethesda game that I buy (and I was so hoping for a Doom 4) as they seem to care very little about PC Gamers (and I just refuse to play an FPS on a console - sorry John Consolmac but you can kiss my @ss you sellout). Conclusion: Wait for the steam super sale...this one ain't worth full price!

What starts off as something that appears limited and simply quickly turns into something rather challenging and enjoyable. Sure I could never sit and just play it for a full day thinking I'd just leave it yet something pulled me back into it and by the time I'd gotten to the last level I was hooked (btw I hate the last level - only got it on around my 7th attempt). DRM issues aside (and being forced to watch their cut scenes at the start of every level) I enjoyed this little game and I'm keen to start on some of the challenge maps that I've unlocked while playing through the game the first time. I always ask myself after completing a game (if I even get to completing them these days): Did I enjoy this game and would I want a sequel with more depth or challenges? The answer is yes and yes!

I've just started re-playing this again after watching the review for the second game (it's been three years already...wowzers!) and I forgot how much I enjoyed it. I guess it's like a lot of things in life - it's an acquired taste that you have to have for it. It was one of the first games I bought for my PS3 and I was a little worried that I wouldn't enjoy it because of the FPS gameplay but I was wrong (I actually can't stand FPS games on a console...especially games like COD - strange huh?). The graphics were seriously awesome and the exploration and side quests were fun too (sure a bit slow sometimes but I was enjoying it so who cares). I remember playing it initially and thinking "damn it's not over yet - YES!" and then when it ended I was upset and cursed at how short it was. Tonight through till Friday I'll be replaying this fantastic little gem that I'll never get rid of (unless the second one is better :p) so let's see if I can finish it again before inFamous 2 comes along.

This got such excellent reviews and I'm struggling to understand why. The lack of freedom while playing is the one thing that put me off - not freedom as in decided to go wherever I want to go but more in terms of it just being so forceful as to how I get there. You can't climb up most things or jump over them - when you can you have to "left click". You can't just enter a door unless you're right in front of it and when you can you "left click". To attack enemies you "left click" ok and you can "right click", "Q" and "E" but most of the time it's "space" "space" "left click" "Q" "left click" "space" "left click" etc. It's just not satisfying. You're "pulled" or "pushed" through doorways rather than having free movement and the invisible walls (more like blocks) make it feel like I'm playing in a maze with very tight corners. The graphics are rather pretty but not pretty enough to have it killing my PC as it currently does. Oh and the camera view feels off as does the movement. Find herbs and making potions is another boring part of the game. Conclusion: I just don't find this fun to ****'t that way games are meant to do - be fun?

I accepted that it was almost like playing a mod in Fallout 3 (really the graphics are almost identical) but the fact that it stopped working after 14 hours of gameplay (my last four save games refuse to **** the only option I have is to lose several hours (4+) of gameplay (which means redo the last four hours of scavening, killing, etc.). I've patched, tweaked, etc. and I just can't get those save games to load again (the backups also don't **** I'd know this before I could probably have just replayed the same bits over again instead of trying to fix it but now I'm afraid to commit any more time to this with the same problem repeating itself later on. Quite frankly I'm going to try and get my money back for this bug infested excuse of a release.
