Shinji Mikami’s philosophy is to focus on making the game’s good aspects shine even brighter instead of trying to eradicate its flaws. His latest work both benefits and suffers from that approach. The Evil Within 2 offers great exploration, but its story is laughable. It’s a thrilling shooter, but a mediocre stealth game. At the end of the day I find Mikami to be right – a game’s best moments count the most and make us turn a blind eye to its flaws. TEW2 fails to reach the level of my beloved Resident Evil 4, but in today’s circumstances a triple AAA survival horror without online components and intrusive microtransactions is a gem. A likeable follow-up that addresses valid criticisms of its predecessor and provides gory fun, but loses a little of what made it special in the process. [Christmas 2017, p.90]
Exploring the game's main town, which is full of monsters, new weapons and items, is a blast. New discoveries will immerse you into the gameplay, and make you forget about that daughter you have to save.

After a very cliched and contrived plot opening, we open into a linear but very well-crafted sequence. 'Ah hah', I thought, 'we just had to get through all that awful voice acting and non-sensical plot to get to the real game!' We open into a free-roam area and the quality jumps off a cliff. Even by 2017 standards, the game looks absolutely awful. As your POV sits so close behind the protagonist, it is difficult to see enemies approaching from anywhere except your front, making deaths feel cheap. Wide open areas evaporate any tension as you can see threats from miles away. Dialogue between characters moves from cut-scenes into in-game conversation checklists. The premise also does not help: the fact that we know that this is a simulation erodes all fear. Sebastian and I know none of this is real, that this is a program going spooky, as that is what the genre demands. The only question left hanging is why and honestly, I could not find myself wishing to know why.

After three years of development, which were converted to 20 hours of playtime, The Evil Within 2 has totally unlocked its predecessor's potential. The wonderful story, the blood-freezing atmosphere, the big variety of horrific monsters and the great progress systems make The Evil Within 2 one of the best survival-horror games of the last few years. Indeed, the game is not bug-free, but those technical issues rarely happen and don't hurt the overall experience. If you like the genre (and particularly the previous title), The Evil Within 2 will be one of your best nightmares yet.

Evil Within 2 brings the classic survival horror formula - to the modern times. Few are the games of today that will grant you that "barely made it" feeling you had playing Resident Evil ages ago. A near perfect, pure survival horror gem.

One of the best horror games of all time. It would be so wonderful if this marvelous series could get a sequel with a third installment!

A remarkable adventure that offers a great atmosphere, story and solid combat. Don't expect to be scared by it, though.

John Johanas has masterfully taken up the directorial reigns and given us a game that, while it shares many trace elements of DNA with its predecessor, has more than enough of a distinct identity in order to separate it from the pack.

It won't be remembered as the best horror game of 2017, but it will certainly send some chills down your spine.

The Evil Within 2 has fine-tuned its solid mechanical base and visuals, and even crafted some big improvements to areas such as exploration and character direction. Yet it lacks creativity and diversity with its level design and bosses. The game may be more presentable and refined than its predecessor, but it's also lost some substance in the process.

A worse game than the already flawed original, whose poorly crafted action is as ineffective as its clichéd attempts at horror.

Evil Within 1 was a flawed game but a unique game; once you play it, there is nothing like it. Evil Within 2 is not a very flawed game, but it’s a very generic game. There is nothing that makes it unique aside from aesthetics, which is just carried on from the earlier game.

RE fans will love it 100% because it is too similar to it. For me the game is very very good, but not perfect. Generally, the main thing that the story, the characters and the whole vibe are mostly reached me. I'd even said that there are some Heavy Rain vibes in the game because of the daughter's part of the plot.
