Tom Clancy's HAWX
6
User ScoreUSG
Nov 27, 2011
The plot of this game is a perfect example of what uninspired is. Other than that, it's an arcade shooter that feels like a simulation with no enjoyable aspects, but at the same time it's not painful to play. At best, it's a very accessible simulator that deviates greatly from reality. The animations are horrid which should be covered up with duct tape and any Tom Clancy game has a very palpable feel. The controls for the PC are hardly decent, especially with a joystick, specifically the one made for the game. All the menus could run more smoothly. HAWX feels like an amalgamation of simulator and arcade elements, but is very mediocre in its presentation.

Portal 2

User ScoreUSG
Nov 27, 2011
Each second of Portal 2 is enjoyable and unique, unlike anything else and it offers a superb storyline and amusing dialogue that compliments it. Unfortunately, a problem is that there can be more stellar material in Portal 2. The difficulty starts out slow with nothing really clever and the puzzles and objects that make the gameplay worthwhile is only used near the end of the game. The detail in the game is tremendous which goes back to the same rooms as Portal but in a new manner, except it showcases the new setting for the first half of the game. The new technologies introduced in the game, such as gels, only make it in too late into the campaign. Despite feeling too short, each second invested into the game is worthwhile and fun. The character must escape from the laboratory which breaks up any repetition caused by tests, although the escaping segments offer no difficulty. Each character in the game is alluring, from GLaDOS and Wheatley to cores with insignificant roles at the end. Overall, the campaign of Portal 2 does indeed inspire awe and the co-op mode can add more hours to the game, but it's ultimately too short which is not for its own good.

Gran Turismo 5

User ScoreUSG
Nov 21, 2011
Upon release, Gran Turismo 5 was more of a disappointment than it is currently before many of its patches. Only on the surface it seemed more pleasing. Notable features such as B-Spec mode to the Used Dealer were poorly received and many of the hyped features before its release (e.g. kart racing) turned out to be only small components. Car damage became an afterthought. A-Spec's prolonged races didn't feel as rewarding as other titles. It's quite disappointing how the license tests became irrelevant. Loading times weren't fantastic like usual and Polyphony must release updates constantly to perfect the game. Other than that, the simulation has been tweaked to approach excellence, the AI is not as bad as it's made out to be, Photo Mode was vastly improved, and online racing has been implemented well. Over the months, Polyphony has slowly improved the game and with a peripheral, Gran Turismo 5 retained enjoyment thanks to some attention to detail present from tuning cars to the tracks and racing itself (for most cases, in balanced races).

Batman: Arkham City
9
User ScoreUSG
Nov 21, 2011
Arkham City is a stellar game that improves on Arkham Asylum featuring a fantastic open world and familiar, great voice acting by much of the cast from Batman: The Animated Series (notably Mark Hamill as the Joker). The scenery is fantastic and gliding between missions is an enjoyable experience. The gameplay is extremely smooth and complimented with competent difficulty settings and various missions. Unfortunately, the story mode could be longer considering its engagement (and, of course, the entire game is single player). There are not enough side-missions to keep a player around long once the game is finished. Gathering Riddler trophies can become an unpleasurable task at the end of the game preventing some players to keep at it. Downloadable content keeps the player active for longer, but not too long. By the time the story is finished along with all side-missions and gadget upgrades, there is not much motivation to continue in the city. Otherwise, anybody who has an interest for Batman would find this game great, with dialog from the characters to models.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Skyrim is analogous to a cult movie but much more popular. Like previous Elder Scrolls titles, Bethesda has succeeded in immersing a gamer in their world. Many aspects of gameplay have been fixed since Oblivion and new features are added that come from Fallout. The new and the improved features have greatly enhanced the game, but there are some insignificant glitches present.

This game has arguably the best story out of all three installments by far. The story is nothing short of fantastic or beautiful. Otherwise, not much is to be said in terms of gameplay as it's nearly identical to the previous titles. Multiplayer is quite an enjoyable aspect, especially to those who are interested in the feature but moderately beats Uncharted 2.

Ace Combat: Assault Horizon

User ScoreUSG
Nov 18, 2011
Overall, this game is just bearable and nothing more. The developers ruined the series' foundations while making its inspiration too obvious. A mediocre inspiration does not result in an outstanding rebirth. Some nice features are preserved from older Ace Combat games, but most other features that resemble a horribly average first-person shooter to ruin its value and are extremely illogical and unrealistic. Whenever the "Mission Completed" screen pops up, a great amount of disappointment is felt in retrospect to Namco's previous titles. Ace Combat: Assault Horizon has many flaws that has been introduced in the new title. The story is extremely forgettable, with stereotypical characters that are given a little thought and lack any depth. Missions are just slammed together in order with no pause. This is complemented by some of the worst songs ever composed for an Ace Combat title which feel unfitting at times whose only goal is to resemble, possibly, the culture of the area the player is flying over but adds nothing to the battle. Some music is just noise. Even Namco has dropped the ball on such staples as radio chatter, with nothing interesting going on and voices are often drowned out on default settings throughout the story. The gameplay itself is also broken. The CRA mode and physics are painfully unrealistic. Anything that is airworthy can backflip, go figure. Forget about taking damage too, feel free to crash into the ground and let the plane's regenerative health do the job. The player does not need to worry about purchasing aircraft, they're presented with a selection with unlocked aircraft. Nobody can enjoy the more rewarding system of purchasing aircraft and using any type of aircraft the player desires for any mission. Not even briefings are present anymore, and the only scripted two scripted briefings or so are horribly uninteresting. Only a few times is the player allowed to land, which are during heavily-scripted sequences under stupid circumstances. Helicopter missions are completely mediocre and unrealistic and there's nothing special at all with the gunner missions that do not separate Assault Horizon from the rest of the crowd. In Assault Horizon, the player is bombarded with constant visual effects. They become irritating, distracting, and disorientating very quickly and also break the pace of the game worse than CRA mode. Once the animation ends, the player must re-orientate and wonder the point of the bells and whistles of the game. One very major negative aspect of the game is the inconsistencies in difficulty during story mode. Many sections are are breeze, but then the player smacks a section that is nearly impossible to complete, let alone achieve a high rank on. The missions do not become progressively harder, either. About all that has been an improvement are the graphics which is expected. The multiplayer does not stand out in particular itself, although it has been improved from Ace Combat 6. Overall, Ace Combat: Assault Horizon is not an enjoyable game and a failure in retrospect to many previous titles. Namco has also failed at marketing it towards western audiences.

Gran Turismo: The Real Driving Simulator

A disappointment to say the least. It ditched the career mode ("Gran Turismo mode") and all the player does is collect cars. Very little gameplay. At least the game has license tests; I can't say the same about the boring races with a few other AI. There's long loading times for each level and every menu, especially on a PSP-1000. Even though it's a car collecting game, the player has to wait to buy which-ever car they want. Each game day a selection of only a few dealers show up, despite how the game is packed with cars. The few pros (such as graphics and frame rate) are easily outweighed. This game was not worth the positive speculation after it was originally announced, years before its release.

My favorite PSP game; it has hours of content, a good and lengthy story, and does not feel like it's just a portable game. The co-op mode is a great addition along with your home base. But the difficulty of Peace Walker can be a little intimidating at times especially with no difficulty settings. It could easily be up-scaled to a console installment because it has so much content.

The story, overall, in Red Dead Redemption is excellent, at least one of the best. It's dynamic, long and still works perfectly. Truthfully the story has blown me away. The game's graphics are generally good; the sky really stands out. The gameplay works; horses prove to be second to none compared to any other game. It has great exploration value, good difficulty, and sufficient features and side missions. The map adds hours of extra play. Its greatness does not even require multiplayer. Redemption does provide a classic Western feel. However, a huge problem are all the glitches in-game which breaks the momentum.

In short: The story is... not so great. The multiplayer is great when you're in a good game, and less of those over time seem to be occurring. The quality (and quantity) of players seem to have decreased. As one would expect, the graphics would improve with technology. The destructibility of buildings and balanced vehicles really sets this game apart. Multiplayer classes really add to gameplay, but are not always perfectly balanced. It has very good online value, but not good story value. Otherwise, it's just another FPS.

Just like a good old Playstation 2 shooter when using the classic controller. The Wiimote-nunchuck setup works well, but it's harder to control for and less preferable for me. Unfortunately, I never played the original. Goldeneye's story and missions do feel like James Bond and it's been time since a good Bond game has been released. The game has very good variation (with vehicles, stealth, and more), but the difficulty during a missions can vary too much. Its AI can be very unintelligent and too quick (they all instantly know your position once your stealth is blown). If you own a Wii, I would certainly recommend this game.

About good as the last game, Assassin's Creed II, with compensation for features lost in II. It feels more like an extension to II rather than a new title, which is probably what the developers wanted. The mission synchronization adds to some mission difficulty, but killing people was made significantly easier. The game feels more focused on the main story. This can also be attributed to being in a single city, which has great variation. I'd say the graphics are about the same; maybe a little better. The multiplayer adds a little more to the game, but not that much (especially after playing the multiplayer beta). The game mechanics could still use a little tweaking, it's sometimes easy to make mistakes and fall off a building and such.

New Vegas is very similar to Fallout 3, but not as good. There is a constant feel of "I've done stuff like that already" in this game. It lacks playability because of this. The radio is boring. The new features were not enough to save the game either. The world is less engaging than Fallout 3. Then there are the bugs, which makes me remove one star or two from the overall score. It would have worked much better as a cheaper add-on to Fallout 3. This being said, the most significant improvement is the difficulty.
