Gran Turismo 5

Kaz Yamauchi's passion for the racing sphere shines through every aspect of the game. The incredibly-detailed cars, the slick presentation, the spot-on physics. Polyphony Digital brought its A-game. Nothing else on the market can come close to the realism and immersion you feel throughout. Gran Turismo 5 is virtual racing at its very best.

In terms of the tech under GT5's hood, the only fault is the occasional spat of screen tearing. It's not ideal, but everything else looks and sounds so beautiful that it's easily forgivable. Think of it as a beauty mark on an otherwise flawless face.

With this fifth full installment in the series, Gran Turismo manages to hold onto its legacy of genre dominating driving sims, but only just. If and when Gran Turismo 6 arrives on the PS3, Polyphony Digital might have to look at bringing more innovation to the series if it wants to pull as far ahead of the chasing pack as it once was.

I never thought I'd see the day I gave a Gran Turismo game less than a 9. And then GT PSP happened. The disappointment continues, but it's abated by what I can only hope are continued, frequent updates.

What PD have delivered is unquestionably a phenomenal achievement and will represent countless lost hours for petrolheads the world over, but the GT series is no longer the gold standard for driving games. If it takes Yamauchi and his team another five years (or more) to better GT5, the brand runs the risk of being left in the past.

It'll probably be years again before Polyphony Digital delivers another Gran Turismo, but I think it's pretty clear what they need to work on: treat all the cars with equal love, give players more options to fine-tune the AI, make driving something to be enjoyed rather than endured, improve all aspects of the online functionality, and re-prioritize all those features into something more focused on fun than a back-of-the-box list.

Gran Turismo 5's core problem is that the broad scope of all these game modes diminishes the polish of the general product. There's no denying the feel of the actual driving, but everything else that makes up the game feels tedious and half-baked.

Such a good game, shame the online is gone, but is still so fun for car tuning and racing

C'est étonnamment paradoxal mais GT5 est le meilleur des GT au niveau de sa conduite qui a très sensiblement progressé : il n'est pas devenu très réaliste pour autant mais propose un comportement assez cohérent désormais et presque plaisant avec un volant. Néanmoins, c'est aussi le plus décevant à de très nombreux égards : IA toujours débile pour ne pas dire inexistante, collisions ridicules, ombres pixélisées, pluie ratée, interface d'un autre âge, bruits de moteur toujours aussi affreux, majorité des voitures "standard" très laides, Nascar inutile, Kart anecdotique, rallye dispensable et mal fait, permis chiants... et j'en passe. Inégal graphiquement, l'éclairage est tout de même de qualité et les ralentis sont toujours aussi appréciables. De son côté, le multi-joueurs n'est certes pas trop mal fichu mais peuplé comme d'habitude de kévins idiots (pléonasme). Quant au mode carrière construit sur le même modèle depuis GT1, il n'a pas évolué et s'avère rapidement limité et barbant. Il est temps que Polyphony se réveille : les Forza Motorsport de Turn 10 lui roulent dessus sans forcer.

This game was frustrating!! Graphics were good, but not as good as so many people said they were. A little disappointing. The game just wasn't fun. I had more fun playing Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2. The download takes forever. The game just wasn't streamlined and was an average racing game. Nothing special about it.
