Relicta9
Nov 4, 2021
Relicta delivers a pure puzzle game experience. The puzzles can get very tricky, especially in the later stages of the game, where the size of each puzzle increases. The only negatives were the terrible writing and voice acting, but to me they're not that important in this genre.

In Between (2015)9
Oct 8, 2019
In Between is a challenging puzzle platformer. The game has an interesting narrative and tells an emotional story, while still staying true to its genre with some of the finest puzzle platforming out there. The main mechanic is a gravity shift: you control gravity with the right analog stick and can fall in any direction or walk on walls and upside down. The game is divided into 5 sections and 60 levels. Each section introduces a new mechanic that its levels are built around. The platforming can get really tight and the puzzles often seem impossible at first, but figuring out the solution and completing a level feels very rewarding.

Sayonara Wild Hearts5

A game that was obviously developed for mobile devices. The music and presentation are cool and stylish, but the gameplay is dull. Some stages are barely a minute long, and the whole experience lasts an hour or so. It's basically a swiping game: Everything is on rails and you just need to press left or right on the controller to avoid obstacles or collect coins. Occasionally you have to press X at the right moment and there are one or two stages that play a bit differently, but it's mostly about style and not gameplay. I liked the visuals and music, but as a game it falls flat.

Great game! The gameplay is smooth and difficulty is well balanced. Graphics and music are sublime and the numerous bossfights are awesome. The story and writing are very clever and filled with meta jokes and wisdom.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider8
Jan 4, 2019
A good game, but it has its flaws. Combat is clunky, with a clear focus on stealth, which isn't a bad thing per se, but once you've been spotted fights become very chaotic and unbalanced. The story is mediocre and generic, many of the environments are depressing and dark with a soundtrack that matches this tone. Often times I got frustrated because I simply couldn't see the ledge I was supposed to jump to etc. Despite all that the game can be a lot fun, especially the challenge tombs. While not really a challenge or hard to figure out, they still give the TR series a unique element that similar games are missing.

Bud Spencer & Terence Hill - Slaps And Beans6
Dec 1, 2018
As a homage to old Bud and Terence movies the game manages to evoke nostalgia. The story takes you through different settings and scenes that are references to the classic films. The gameplay in itself is nothing special though. The game is mainly a mediocre side scrolling beat 'em up that gets mixed up with some mini games here and there. It's a short and simple game that will mostly appeal to players who are fans of the movies, but even then I'd say wait for a sale.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey5
Nov 23, 2018
AC:Odyssey is boring and the more it tries to be a jack of all trades, the more it becomes clear that it's a master of none. I can't play this game for more than an hour because gameplay and quest design feels like a monotonous chore and the cut scenes and story are boring and uninspired.

Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom3
Nov 6, 2018
This game is too easy. Even on hard difficulty you can easily defeat monsters that are higher level than you by randomly pushing buttons. Most of the story is being told in subtitles, as there is very little voice acting in the game. Either way, the story and characters are cringy. The cel-shaded graphics look great, but the overworld has a different art style and looks pretty bad.

I'm typically not a big fan of the platformer genre, but this game is just pure and simple fun. Each chapter looks different and offers its unique elements and dangers, as well as a great soundtrack that manages to sound modern while still being reminiscent of the chiptunes of the past. The controls are simple: you run, jump and **** when you die, you try again. Dying usually won't set you back more than a few seconds, which makes progressing throughout the game a lot less frustrating then it potentially could have been. Still, at times the game made me want to throw the controller against the wall, but it's those hard passages that gave me the sense of accomplishment once I mastered them. For the most part, getting through various screens and passages feels like finding the solution to a puzzle, figuring out where to jump and when to dash, which wall to hang on to, etc. Then it comes down to perfect timing, especially when trying to collect the optional strawberries that are scattered throughout the game. But the real challenge are the B-sides. B-sides are unlocked by finding hidden collectibles. They are harder versions of the main chapters, with completely new screens/level layouts and passages. Without giving away every little detail, I just want to point out that there is a lot of content in the game, many things to discover and legit playing through everything the game has to offer will keep you busy for quite a while.

Elex7
Aug 3, 2018
Elex has glimpses of greatness, but sadly those become overshadowed by bugs and technical flaws. It has the stuff I want to see in an RPG, a lot of quests with different options and outcomes, a big and beautiful map to explore as well as interesting characters and lore. But performance issues, clunky combat, bad balancing and a strange leveling system keep it from reaching its full potential. The fact that there are major bugs in the game that havent been patched 9 months after its release is inexcusable.

EVERSPACE5
Aug 1, 2018
The game looks nice and polished enough, but the controller scheme and button configuration feel odd and takes some getting used. Combat is unfair, you are underpowered and supposed to die, which sends you back to the home screen. There you can slowly level up your ship after each death with the credits you've amassed by shooting a few rocks and enemies before you watched your ship explode. You are then put back into some random space scenery and the cycle continues. This game is mediocre at best and left me with no real desire to play it again.

Shift Quantum9
Jun 5, 2018
Shift Quantum is an outstanding puzzle game with an original core mechanic, challenging levels, great music and a level editor on top. There are plenty of levels and the difficulty ranges from easy to hard and downright evil. You know a puzzle game is good when you're smiling because you just can't figure out the solution. The shift ability let's you walk into negative space, which on its own is already mind-bending. In combination with some of the other mechanics this game features a variety of puzzles that keeps the levels fresh and interesting. In some levels Shift Quantum adds a few story elements to its otherwise no compromise 2D puzzle gameplay. There are general hints of a setting and the levels are put in front of a soothing, subtly animated cyberpunk themed backdrop. The music fits this theme as well and is a great soundtrack for puzzle solving. The game also comes with an easy to use editor where you can create and share your own levels as well as a community browser that lets you play others'.

The game is a bullet hell shooter and it's hard to master, but the continues are unlimited. It features unique characters and ships, each has their own three weapons for attack, support and defensive use. The soundtrack is good but the 3d graphics can look a bit rough at times. I got it on sale, had a few hours of fun and come back to it every once in a while.

Everything8
May 25, 2018
Everything is simple, yet charming. It offers a peaceful and relaxing experience that taught me a new philosophy of life, nature and everything really. There's not much that will keep the average gamer for long in Everything: no action, combat or puzzles, the graphics are subpar and there isn't any story to the game. But what this game can do, is put you in a different state of mind. You'll be exploring the world of Everything by simply taking on the form of different animals, plants, objects and pretty much anything that is out there. As you stumble and roll through the world, jumping from one form into the other, you sometimes find tape recordings of philosopher Alan Watts. Letting his words sink in while continuing to explore the world of Everything was a unique experience that I would have never expected from a game.

Horizon Zero Dawn6
May 25, 2018
Overall Guerrilla Games took a few Hollywood blockbusters from the past and mixed them with a stale blend of gameplay mechanics, poorly copied from other games. If there is one thing the developer exceeded at, it's making a mediocre game look good. Yes, this game has great graphics, but that's pretty much it. The story is a mix of rehashed movie plots and was seemingly written in hindsight to accommodate the main idea of fighting robot animals. This wouldn't be a problem, if those fights were actually somewhat interesting. But for the most part, combat in Horizon Zero Dawn is a monotonous cycle of performing dodge rolls and shooting arrows, with a few melee attacks now and then. The sidequests are among the most boring I've ever seen in a video game. They only differ in the form of the cheesy story the quest giver will tell you. They all follow the same formula: Go to point A and examine the area, follow footsteps to point B and examine the area, follow footsteps to point C **** get the idea. Eventually you find whatever it is you were looking for and can return to the quest giver. Weapons, customizations and perks are meaningless and arbitrary; a tacked on, low effort attempt to add some RPG flavor to a bland open world game. The only thing this game is rich in, is map icons. You will find a lot of locations that promise some sort of activity, too bad it will always feel like the exact same thing you did 10 minutes ago.

NieR: Automata10
May 25, 2018
The story telling, characters, soundtrack and voice acting all are fantastic and highly original. The seamless blend of melee and ranged attacks makes for a fast paced, fun and action heavy combat that finds its culmination in numerous boss fights. NieR: Automata's innovative use of the camera and core mechanics allows for a mix of genres that never feels forced or out of place. A true masterpiece!

Final Fantasy XV4
May 25, 2018
Final Fantasy XV is boring. The combat is bland and for the most part all you have to do is hold down a single button to watch your character fight. There is another button that you press to warp across the screen and strike your foe from a distance, but that's basically it in terms of offensive maneuvers. Speaking of boring, the game lets you watch a car drive through the scenery to travel the lands of Whateverland. You can not steer the car other then turn left or right at crossroads. It's on autopilot for most of the time and you just watch as it drives down the road and listen to the childish banter between the characters inside the car. The quests are tedious, and literal fetch quest. The same guy will send you to different spots over and over again to collect dog tags for example. These quests just boil down to a few minutes of watching the car drive, arrive at the general location, go to the map marker, fight a small group of easy creatures, pick up the dog tags and watch the car drive back to collect your reward. Other quests make you comb through an open area to find and collect small things. These quests will test your patience and have you running in circles over and over again, looking behind every rock until you finally find the last little quest item. There are a few noteworthy things, like nice graphics and animation. Some of the bigger creatures look good as well, but the combat in this game is just so bad that it doesn't matter what you're fighting, it feels meaningless. Add to all of this a shallow story, bad voice acting and overall strange moments like you and your party riding on the back of pink birds while acting like a group of eight year olds, and you know why after 12 hours of forcing myself to keep playing, I eventually just quit.

Forgotton Anne8
May 24, 2018
Forgotton Anne is a charming anime adventure that won me over with its original story, lovely characters and beautiful art style. The game does not feature any combat, and aside from some light puzzle platforming elements now and then, it focuses heavily on telling a story. To advance through this story you run, jump and climb your way from one set piece to the next and talk to the characters that inhabit the "ether". Occasionally you will have to flip some switches and find the solution to smaller puzzles, but nothing too hard. To me, the main appeal of Forgotton Anne was the art style - the beautiful locations and scenery, the characters that reminded me of the movies I watched as a kid, the subtle changes in color and lighting while advancing through a scene, as well as the bigger ones, when entering a new set piece for example. The story was rich and deeper than I had expected, and the accompanying music set the mood perfectly. The only small issue I had, was that the sound mix between voices and music felt unbalanced a few times, and the options menu only had a slider for master volume. Definitely nothing game breaking though. This game may not employ the most intricate gameplay mechanics, but Forgotton Anne has some nostalgia inducing qualities that are hard to describe and best to be experienced by anyone looking for a more relaxing and story-driven game.

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen10
May 23, 2018
The first time I played Dragon's Dogma it felt like the game I had always wanted to play without ever knowing it. There are so many layers to this game that make it a standout title, a few of the key ones: Combat in Dragon's Dogma is spot on and offers a lot of variety, thanks to the different classes and deep customization system. Each class can be further specialized and changed anytime at specific locations. Plus, there's a huge amount of weapons and gear that can be upgraded. Giant creatures make for epic battles, whether you're climbing up a cyclops's head to ram your dagger into his eye or you're shooting arrows at a beast with a body that is half lion, half goat and has a poison spitting snake as tail. Your party allows for three additional support NPCs, which in Dragon's Dogma are called pawns. The pawn system allows you to create and share your own companion as well as recruit other players creations to your party. In addition to the base game, the PS4 version includes the Dark Arisen expansion, which offers a huge amount of end/post game content in the form of Bitterblack Isle. The art design is great and the music might haunt you even long after you've finished the game.
