Cannibal Holocaust8
Jul 2, 2020
What can be display in a movie? What is the line that cannot be crossed? There are many different answer for these questions. If you think that there must be some sorth of morality in what can be display this is not a film for you. For me is pretty simple. We live in a society who has lost all sense of modesty and morality whatsoever so what's the point to censor something? Who can decide that something cannot be showed? There isn't a common sense of decency and there is no sense of shame. So for me there's no common line. The only line is the personal one. I don't wanna see extreme violence? I simply avoid that contents. After this necessary premise I can say that Cannibal Holocaust marked an era. It innovated and almost created the "horror" found footage genre and represent a milestone for the cannibal movies. It has influenced a large part of splatter/horror directors and its contribution to these genres it's incontestable.
The film has been very successful and is certainly a cult thanks also to the stories that surrounded the production and the various charges to the director. The plot is simple but innovative for its era and the director's work and special effects are remarkable. Riz Ortolani's soundtrack is amazing and iconic. Inspired by Mondo's movie, Cannibal Holocaust is extreme, violent, graphic, hyperrealistic (SPOILER: six animal real deaths appear onscreen - killed by the actors- and these are indeed difficoult to watch, especially the turtle, the point of no return in the characters' story). It is one of those essential films, a must watch, everybody knows it, talks about it (even without seen it) but you have to watch it in order to appreciate it (or don't appreciate it) and really judge it. And in the end the viewers are nothing more than the characters of the executives producer in the movie. They found this film, they are orrified by it, by the extreme violence, by the cruelty they see on screen, by the unjustified brutality, but not once they stop looking. We are just like them. We watch this kind of movies as we watch everyday violence, we want to see how much they will show, how far they have gone, what lines they cross. And at the same time we test our limit, our endurance, what we are willing to watch before we stop looking. Deodato made this movie as a commentary on ethics in journalism, in fact it was inspired by the italian media coverage of the Red Brigades. It's also real that this anti-exploitation critic it's done by using just the same technique. The movie and the same Ruggero Deodato can be accused of hypocrisy. But aren't journalists, critics and public opinion who accuse the film of being too violent so much more hypocritical?

The Raid: Redemption10
Jun 24, 2020
"1 Minutes of Romance, 100 Minutes of Non-Stop Carnage". The Raid is a masterpiece, no doubt about it. It's pure adrenaline. It's strong, brutal, violent, intense, entertaining. No Hollywood action movie can compare to this. There are massive shooting, fights with bare hands, with knives, with machetes, broken bones, falling bodies. The choreography of the fighting is just perfect. The amount of work that the director, Gareth Evans, puts into the making of this film is simply amazing: every scene was designed perfectly. He doesn't want to just filming some combat but he gives a sense to everything that happens, and the few connecting scenes are treated as good as the action scenes. The plot is indeed at minimum but coherent. The Indonesian stunts are incredible. It stars two of the most talented athletes and martial arts fighter out there: Iko Uwais and Yayan Ruhian. The soundtrack matchs perfectly with the action. This is new classical action movies. It's a watershed, there is a "before The Raid" and an "after The Raid". Since the release of the film, Hollywood has tried to adapt and has produced movie inspired by the cinematography and the style of The Raid with some good and some bad results, but there is nothing like this. Simply a masterpiece. 10/10.

Extraction8
Jun 24, 2020
Extraction is an unespected little miracle from an Hollywood/Netflix production. It's a great action movie that nods to the masterpiece "The Raid". Of course it's not at the same level of Gareth Evans' work but it's strong and entertaining movie with the right amount of violence and finally some really awesome combact scenes, perfectly choreographed. The central car chase scene is just epic. Chris Hemsworth steps out of his superhero clothes and gives us a convincing performance. The plot is nothing unseen but it's solid. The 12-Minute, One-Shot Action Scene alone worth the vision of this film. If you are a fan of the genre this is the right movie. A little gem in Netflix Library.

Triple Frontier8
Jun 24, 2020
I was convinced to see Triple Frontier after I saw the big posters scattered around my city. I had high expectations and I was not disappointed. I was really expecting a big action movie (maybe a classical "commando against narcos"), but it's more of a classical heist movie and a great one. The first half of the movie is really good: good characters' introductions, everyone with their own specialties, and pretty decent action scenes. The second half is a little more slow but pretty intriguing. It reminds me of an old-fashioned movie, solid, with fast pace, intense and thoughtful. It begins with the action, and then switch to an adventure film, to get to the drama and to end up in the action again. The performance of the entire cast is on point, especially Charlie Hunnam and Garrett Hedlund. The introduction of the character of Oscar Isaac is perfect. The character played by Ben Affleck could be difficult to understand at first. He was supposly the most expert and rational one, he turns out to be the most unprofessional. But it's an interesting and unespected character development. The plot (and the screenplay) could have been more courageous and focus more on the greed and on the "good guys turn bad" theme, but it's still a breath of fresh air in nowadays' movie scene. It's really a surprise coming from a Netflix's production. It also has an excellent photography and soundtrack. I really enjoy it. Absolutely recommended, 8/10.

Twin Murders: The Silence of the White City7
Jun 24, 2020
El silencio de la ciudad blanca is an intriguing and a little chaotic psychological thriller/noir. A positive element about this movie is that it's not so foregone, the plot is clever enought to make you question your conclusions. It's also quite courageous to make a big reveal halfway through the film without spoiled it. It's a little muddler but enjoyable. The directing and the acting are fine. It makes me wanna read the novel from which it's taken. Not bad, 7/10.

Independence Day7
Jun 22, 2020
Independence Day is the perfect synthesis of every cliché of sci-fi movies with its pros and cons. We got the hero soldier who save the world one joke at the time, the nerd that was right all along and of course the America President that makes maybe the longest motivational speach in the history of movies (and of course he's also a badass pilot). When I first saw this, in 1996 I was a child, if I had to judge it then I would have said without a doubt that Independence Day is the best alien movie ever, so cool, so funny, so epic. I would probably have change my nationality to be a badass american like them. Of course opinions change when you grow up and so it does my judgement about this movie. Independence Day still remains an enjoiable movie, with decent acting, good actions and special effects and some memorable scenes (see the White House). But now I can also understand the irony behind this type of movies, with these american stereothipical heroes, the ridiculous presidential speech, all of the jokes that want to be so tough (some sort of "I laugh in the face of danger" type of thing - typical of the american blockbuster's era). After all I think it was the intent of Roland Emmerich (who isn't an american) to give this sort of sensation. The brave americans who save the world once again by smoking cigars, saying cheesy lines and punching aliens: "Welcome to Earth!". In the end I gladly rewatch it from time to time, with my VHS (with the Lenticular/ Hologram promo card), but mainly to laught about it.

The Platform2
Jun 22, 2020
The most irritating thing about this movie it's that people really think it's so profund, meaningfull, innovative. So, men are bad, it's their nature, society is unjust and even more bad, it's intrinsic in human nature to be absolutely selfish and anyone is willing to do anything to survive. THANKS TO "THE PLATFORM" now I know these absolutely obvious concepts. This movie try so hard to be deep, to make a social criticism but it fails in the intent becouse of lack of plot, good directing and onestly the whole premise has not sense at all. I do not intend to make comments about the ending because it's really an offense to the spectator's intelligence. I go with 2/10 instead of 0 because panna cotta is my favourite dessert. What a waste of time.

Fractured5
Jun 22, 2020
There is a big problem with this movie, it's too predictable. It could work if you are not too familiar with psychological thriller but it's too similar to other movie to be shocking. Paradoxically the all strange wibes and mistery atmophere present since the beginning of the movie give right away the twist. It's a good premise but they could have developed it much better.

Texas Killing Fields6
Jun 22, 2020
Based on true events, Texas Killing Field is a classical crime thriller. Two cops (one the opposite of the other) chasing killers and being too involve in the case. It's not a bad movie per se but I think this is a big missed opportunity. The true events behind this story, involving cases of serial killer, could have easily being transpose into a tv series. There are too much going on for a single movie. It doesn't tell us the backgroud of the events, and if you don't know the stories behind this Highway in Texas you struggle to unederstand why the characters behave in a certain way. We sense that there is more (expecially in the characters' history) but it's not really explained. Anyway I enjoy the movie because i really like the genre, but it's just an ordinary film, with good acting, and with potentially a perfect atmosphere for a crime movie. It's really a missed chance.

The Passion of the Christ10
Jun 19, 2020
The Passion of the Christ shows in an incredible realistic way the last hours of Jesus Christ, whitout a doubt one of the most important event in the history of mankind. Though there are a lot of movies about this event and about the life of Christ this is by far the most authentic, powerful and honest one. This movie has something that the others are missing. It was made with the intent to show what the Crucifixion really was, without omit anythig. Mel Gibson's work with this movie was incredible. You can see it by reading the interviews with cast and troupe members. The atmosphere in which they worked was incredible. All the resource use by Gibson to give a proper rapresentation of the events was admirable. And without a doubt Jim Caviezel give us the best interpretation of Jesus ever. How he prepared himself for this part is something else compared to a normal actor work. Because for him, for the director and for the majority of the workers on this set it was not a "normal" job. It was something more profound and strong. This is what you see in the movie (especially if you read the stories behind the making of it). There are so many powerful scenes: the look in Barabba's eyes when he sees Jesus, Mary that runs towards his Son when He fell with the Cross, Pilate that wash his hands, the death of Judas... It's all so rich of details and precision. The location, the costumes, the screenplay, the cinematography are all really impressive. And the use of the real historical lenguages makes the movie even more perfect. I suppose that the approach to this film by an atheist or a non-Christian it's very different compared to the one of a Catholic but I think that everybody can appreciate a work made with so much dedication and cleverness. The negative reviews, especially the ones from film critics really make me believe that they don't really see the movie or they have been affected by prejudices against Mel Gibson of course and indeed by their opinions about Chrisianity and Catholicism. The ones who accuse this movie of beeing too violent or too graphic have to undestand that this is what happened, simply as that. We see the beginnig of Saving Private Ryan: it shows extreme violence of course but it a true rapresentation of what D-Day was and so we consider it a masterpiece. Why don't use the same treatment with this movie? Why show an historic event (and really, if anybody has a doubt about the historical accuracy of the life of Jesus, please literate yourself with some Roman historians like Tacitus or Pliny the Younger) for what it was it's controvesial? The tortures, the Via Crucis, the Crucifixion was brutal, violent, difficoult to watch but this is what it's supposed to be. If they feel unconfortable to watch maybe it's because they can't or don't want to stare the truth. I honestly can't give this movie anything other than 10/10. One of the greatest movie ever made, and without a doubt the one with the most profound meaning for those who see it and for those who have done it.

The Bad Batch1
Jun 19, 2020
A dystopic future with a cannibal tribe, a girl that have to escape from them, all set in the Texas desert. When I read this plot on Netflix I honestly think that The Bad Batch would be all I was looking for in a thriller/cannibal/dystopic movie. I couldn't be more wrong. In 115 minute of film almost nothing happens. There are two supposly "violent" scene, all off screen and the rest of the movie is just this girl making bad decisions and walks in the desert. It was bad, and not in a good way. Not so bad that you can laught about it, just bad and really annoying to watch. I have nothing against "slow" movies or "no dialogues" ones and I could really enjoy them but this is not the case. The biggest problem is that it's really pretentious. This movie is a wanna be George Miller meets Quentin Tarantino, you can feel it, but it is neither of them. It takes more that some violent themes (cannibals in this case) and an apocalyptic scenario to make a movie like Mad Max or Kill Bill. Only mention a masterpiece like Fury Road in the same sentence of this movie is an insult. It wants to be courageous and innovative but it's not. A waste of time. Next time I'll definitely check out the director before see anything, I would have spare 115 minutes.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword9
Jun 19, 2020
The critics' review just don't make justice to this movie. It's epic, funny, fast and really enjoiable. It's a shame we won't see a sequel. Charlie Hunnam is perfect for this role and Guy Richie's vision for these franchiase could have been epic. I expecially love the photography and the soundrack. Go see it!
