Middle-earth: Shadow of War
10
User ScoreKujin
Jan 28, 2021
Shadow of War is, quite literally, everything Shadow of Mordor was, exept better, bigger and more in every way possible. The game, like it's predecessor, is a relatively slow burn, which is made worse by the fact that the overall loop is so enjoyable and addictive. I spent, no joke, somewhere around 10 **** hours just running around Minas Ithil - the first location - killing orks, leveling up and disabling outposts. And as a result I was kind of blown away by the sieges, the new beast riding, new nemesis options and the nemesis system in general. It's even more impressive here, with so much enemy virety - both gameplay and aesthetic - that you will be having consistent fun and drama with it throughout your playthrough. Thanks to it, the fairly gripping story and loot collecting, time just flies. It wouldn't be long before you find your routine, and the game is appropriately long so that you won't get bored with it. The endgame is fairly decent too, basically being just a bit more of Shadow of War for those who loved it. Shadow of War was an unfortunate event in almost every way possible, pissing everyone off at release and cementing Warner Bros. as a truly awful entity. But for what it's worth, Shadow of War is an amazing game, well worth the time and effort the team has poured into it, and it is worth your time as well.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag

User ScoreKujin
Jan 27, 2021
AC4 is one of those "if they gave it one-two more years, it would've been a masterpiece" situations. This is pretty much the best Assassin's Creed game of the pre-Unity generation, combining great story, a lived-in open world and innovation to create a uniquely fun action experience. It's full of pirate's romance, great music and vibrant folliage. Black Flag's bugginess is pretty much deep in it's core, and with how overkill the road to 100%-ing it was, there're a lot of little things that bring the whole game down

If it wasn't for it's forgettable story, I would have no problems calling Unity my favourite of the pre-Origins Assassin's Creed game. It builds on everything from the rest of the franchise (barring all the hunting and sea stuff from 3&4), making the assassin fantasy come to life about as well as humanly possible. But the most inspired thing in Unity is the world - Paris is crafted with such care that it's truly impossible not to lost yourself in this city and this period of it's life. Perhaps, with a couple more years put into fleshing out Unity's characters and mission variety, and generally applying a lot of polish, this game could've been a masterpiece and the beggining of the next chapter of Assassin's Creed, but, unfortunately, it instead became the thing that put this franchise to sleep, from which it's still yet to wake up

Journey Is a totally unique and wonderful game, and is a true must-play for any gamer. Somewhat bafflingly , it manages to use as little as possible to create an amazing experience: it's simplicity is almost exclusively a positive. With all it's two-action gameplay, simple graphical style and lack of a narrative Journey is a surprisingly emotional game.

Murdered: Souls Suspect is a great concept with not great everything else. It's seems very unforunate all around, with the story being so forgetable that it's incredible, and the gameplay being unremarkable at best. There's not much to say, except for the fact that I wish someone makes this very game again, but with a bigger budget and more effort and talent put into development

Assassin's Creed Rogue
6
User ScoreKujin
Jan 11, 2021
AC Rogue is basically a worse, reskined and down-sized version of Black Flag. And the "reskined" portion is probably the best thing about Rouge - the new (kinda) setting really breathes new life into this game compared to it's older brother. It's just fun to cut through ice, land on snow-covered little islands, climb that templar-armor-ship in the middle of nowhere. But the thing with AC4 is that, without it's story, characters and romance of the pirate life, every part of the game becomes worse. The shallow combat, the glitchy parkour, the boring missions - it's all the more noticable, though it's much the same. All the bad parts of Black Flag were held together by it's narrative and setting, and by perserving the bad and replacing the good with a boring lazy narrative, Rogue becomes infinitely worse and less worthy of attention than it's predecessor.

Disregarding the launch state of the game - this is a near impeccable game, brimming with care of it's creators and their craftsmanship. Dishonored 2 is left with little to no problems of it's predecessor, while keeping to itself all of the qualities that made the original Dishonored great and memorable - it's world, it's style, it's unique gameplay and it's characters. This is a rare type of games where the "goods" are so good that it's exceedingly hard to point out actual flaws and problems with it, even though they *probably* exist. Everyone should try it out, especially the fans of the original game

Halo 2: Anniversary

Dec 16, 2020
Halo 2 is a bigger, better and more varied and interesting Halo 1. It evolves the sandbox with amazing new weapons like the Energy Sword, there are a lot more sprawling levels like the first maps of CE, and ones that are a bit more tighter feel tense and immersing. The whole Arbitre story line is a brilliant and unexpected addition that fleshes out the world and adds more interest to Halo 2's antagonists. The game is pretty as it is, but the Anniversary edition, unlike the first game's remaster treatment, improves the visuals tenfold. Like the first Halo, Halo 2 is still fresh and still worth playing today, but unlike Halo 1, this game is truly great without any caveats (UNLESS WE'RE TALKING THE ENDING)

It's still challenging and immersive, and the music is amazing. A classic for sure

With a traditional Remedy zaniness sprinkled through the game's story, Alan Wake is a game with a mediocre and boring gameplay, encouraging the player to stay put, point at the baddies and shoot. It's story is a cliche-riddled tale of nothing, barely exploring it's themes while being completely uninterested in it's characters. Alan himself is a **** you don't want to succeed, and two years after beating this game i couldn't remember his wife's name. It's not scary, and it's attempts to mix up the gameplay loop are pathetic. I don't think I will ever think about Alan Wake as anything than a hiccup from Remedy, a step down from Max Payne and an unfortunate stepping stone to Quantum Break and Control

User ScoreKujin
Dec 3, 2020
Ori and the Will of The Wisps is a worthy successor to the first game that overshadows it in every way possible. The unique visual style of Ori 1 was made to look breathtaking in almost every situation, with some great new effects and bright and saturated colors. Every zone in the game feels unique and is fun to explore once you get to them. New enemies are so much fun to kick around, thanks in a big, big part to the fact that combat is actually there now! Getting a sword was jarring, but even in the first level, not having any crazy abilities from near the end of the game, it is so incredibly fun and awesome to zip around your enemies, landing as many hits as possible without letting foes touch you, and upgrading all the new abilites Ori 2 introduces is infinitely more fun than it was in Blind Forest. And, best of all, The Will of the Wisps finally fulfills the promise of a real, emotional narrative that keeps to the idea of fairy-tale-like simplicity. Right from the beggining, the focus on adventure with friends is apperent. You fly and have fun with Ku (although I wish there was more of that), you rebuild the village sort of thing in the heart of the island, talking to moki and other characters, completing quests for them. It feels amazingly more engaging to travel for some good person's sake or to rescue your owl sibling from the clutches of a tragic villian with a simple but emotional backstory, instead of completeing requests of a tree diety and trying to save your mom who you don't know and thus can't connect to, from the clutches of a menacing creautre, who's entire problem with you and Nibel (the tree diety) is basically a huge misunderstanding. The story is actually great in Ori and the Will of the Wisps, precisely because of it's simplicity. It doesn't try to make you think and then to emotionaly engage you, it goes for the heart immideately and never lets go of it until the very end and a boss battle that you'll remember forever. Great game

Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition

User ScoreKujin
Dec 3, 2020
Ori and the Blind Forest is a beautiful game with some fun music and sequences, and it keeps you engaged pretty much from start to finish. Main levels and such are great for the most part, and it's fun and addictive to run around clearing out the map. Unfortunately, it suffers from a lack of variety, polish (gameplay-wise) and thought put into the story. The game promises to be an emotional journey, but it's characters are not that interesting and you don't spend much time with any of them, and some of the supposedly emotional points in the story feel dull and forced. And the lenght of the game and how it's paced don't really make it feel like a real "journey". The fairy-tale style of storytelling wasn't doing it for me either, as it felt pretty disconnected from the rest of the story and was honestly pretty distracting. I can respect and appreciate Moon Studios' committment to simplicity in terms of story, but they don't comitt fully, and the story suffers because of it. And Ori's gameplay is boring, oops

No loading in levels, smooth as hell assets in combination with Katamari Damacy's brilliance create an almost perfect game. But, unfrotunetaly, Reroll doesn't adress the lenght of the game, which it's lacking in greatly, leaving you wanting so much more after the credits roll and you've beaten every level dozens of times. Titanfall 2 is a...mixed bag. Which doesn't mean it's bad or even mediocre - the core gameplay of flying around as a Pilot and stomping the fields as a Titan is amazing! But singleplayer is definitely lack luster: though every level has a unique gimmick and they are all fun to play and memorable, the campaign's length(around 5 hours) is disappointing. If anything, the quality of the game only reminds you that there's not a lot of it, when I really would like to just keep playing. The story is also very short, which strongly undermines the bond you develop with BT. Halfway through the game it feelt like BT was really becoming my friend, but when the game ended so abruptly, I feltl like my friendship with my Titan hadn't really finish blossoming, and I for one hope Titanfall 3 will continue developing both Cooper's and BT's character. But with all that said - the game is still awesome. And if you felt underwhelmed by the singleplayer mode, the multiplayer will definitely justify the purchase. Titanfall 2 is a great game

Jul 15, 2020
Dying Light, as many have pointed out, is extremely derivative of a lot of other games. In fact, it's one of the most derivative games I've ever played, with the only original thing about it being it's night hunt mechanic. With that said, Dying Light is also one of the most fun, addictive and enjoyable games I've played in a while. It' just very fun to run around, easily scale buildings, whale on different types of zombies and create exceedingly more powerful weapons. The story is simple but well written, and it gives enough context for the gameplay and enough incentive to keep going. And the continuous support for the game even five years later is nothing but amazing. From it's so-so graphics to it's unoriginality, Dying Light doesn't seem like it's any good, but the clever mix of all of it's elements and their skillful execution (barring the occasional bugs galore) give the game a lot of charm and make it surprisingly great. Hats off, Techland

Watch Dogs 2 is everything the first game was, refined and expanded in every way. There is a plethora of options for a (relatively) stealthy mission completion: sneaking behind and completing objectives without being seen, sending the quadjumper to hack everything and get out in a matter of minutes or bomb the whole level with your drone. Run-and-gun is just as fun, since it is encouraged to run around, create confusion and distract in order to execute your enemies with highest proficiency. The story is a fun, self-aware romp, full of fun and memorable characters and a long-awaited exploration of the first game's themes of corruption, mass surveillance and hacking. The **** cool. This is a fairly unique, fun-to-play and memorable overall package. Unfortunately, the game's heart wasn't in the right place: not really embracing it's themes of hacking, mass surveillance, corporate and government corruption, Watch Dogs instead chose to be a grey, gloomy and slow crime drama, it's world being an awkward mesh of GTA's big cities and Assassin's Creed repetitive-quests-riddled maps. The gameplay is intriguing, but not allowing for a lot of creativity in approaching mission completion. At the end of the day, like the first Assassin's Creed game, Watch Dogs 1 is a beginning of something potentially great, something able of realizing all of it's potential

Bioshock Infinite is a frustrating game to think about. While the story, the style, the characters and the world of it are excellent, the *game* that those elements are build on is luck-luster. Vigors can be fun, but most function the same as the rest, being either a CC or a pure Damage ability, and those that are not are optional to the point of almost being worthless. The guns can be fun, but upgrading more than one or two is pointless and unsatisfying, not to mention certain weapon types being way better than others. The levels are mostly similar to each other, and the individual ways they use rails and rifts rarely add anything all that interesting. Infinite feels like a game that should've stayed a year or two ln the oven, but more than anything Bioshock Infinite is a totally unique and wonderful game, worthy of being being experienced by every gamer.
