Watch Dogs 2

Watch Dogs 2 has aged really well. One thing that surprised me while revisiting this game is just how much San Francisco still feels like one of Ubisoft's most fun and well-crafted open worlds. The city is beautiful, colorful, and full of personality. It's not just a backdrop for the missions — it's a place you actually want to explore. And perhaps the biggest strength is the sheer amount of little things happening around you. NPCs talk, argue, take pictures, get into random situations, and generally seem like they're living their own lives. You can finish a mission and end up spending several minutes just watching what's going on around the city. It's the kind of open world that can create interesting moments without needing to put a marker on the map for everything. Visually, the game is still impressive too. Even though it came out in 2016, San Francisco still looks great, especially when you start exploring its different areas. The mix of urban streets, nature, beaches, bridges, and the tech-heavy atmosphere of Silicon Valley gives the game a very distinct visual identity. It's one of those games where sometimes you just want to stop and take in the scenery. What's even more interesting is how well all of this fits with Watch Dogs 2's premise. Technology, social media, surveillance, data manipulation, and people's growing dependence on technology were already very relevant topics when the game was released — and looking at it today, they somehow feel even more relevant. The characters also help a lot. Marcus and the DedSec crew are charismatic and have a much more entertaining dynamic than the characters in the first game. It's easy to like the group and follow along with all the crazy things they get themselves into around the city. But here's the biggest problem for me: the story doesn't quite live up to the quality of the world. The story has some great ideas and tackles interesting subjects, but it often feels a little shallow. There are moments when the game brings up a potentially really interesting discussion, only to make a joke and move on to the next mission. The lighter tone fits the game, but it also means that some subjects that could have had more weight don't get explored as deeply as they could have. I wouldn't say it's a bad story. It's simply not the strongest part of the game. It's almost as if Watch Dogs 2 created such an interesting world that the actual campaign ends up feeling smaller than it should.Still, it's hard not to have fun. Watch Dogs 2 is a great example of how an open world can be more interesting when you simply let the player mess around with it. Hacking cars, phones, cameras, traffic lights, and pretty much everything around you gives you a really satisfying sense of freedom, and there are plenty of ways to approach a situation without simply shooting everyone. In the end, perhaps the best way to describe it is this: Watch Dogs 2 is a game I enjoy more for the world it created than for the story it tells. San Francisco is fantastic, the NPCs make the city feel much more alive, the characters are charismatic, the graphics still look great, and the game's take on technology is surprisingly relevant even today. Could the story have been better? Absolutely. But if you enjoy open-world games where you can simply walk around without knowing exactly what you're going to find, Watch Dogs 2 is still a great choice. A solid 9.5/10
