Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker
8
User Score4Nick3
Dec 19, 2019
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was unfortunately not given much to go off of from Rian Johnson's mess that was 'The Last Jedi'. This film takes the mess left behind and executes some stupid and silly ideas very well. This film was enjoyable, the action scenes were very much impactful and a joy to watch. The acting is exceptional and runs alongside amazing directing by JJ Abrams who does a very good job to make it feel like a 'Star Wars' film. That being said, the film was relatively convoluted but it was not extremely hard to keep up with the plot, there is just a lot to take in here. Overall, 'The Rise of Skywalker' is unpredictable in good ways, takes risks that work out pretty well, but with that comes a bit of a mess that unfortunately can make someone lose their focus with the screenplay. People are going to say it just **** and it "the worst star wars film," but that is not true at all. Just try to enjoy it, it is not spectacular or by any means the best 'Star Wars' film, but it is really good and worthy of having the name "Skywalker" in its title, and a good amount of that is derived from that terrific ending. Rocketman

User Score4Nick3

Rocketman follows the story of Elton John and his rise to fame. The formula for Rocketman, and like any other musical biopic is quite familiar, but Rocketman bends and twists this formula in ways that make it special. It has a very unique execution from Elton John telling his story to a rehab group, the amazing musical numbers, and the highs and lows of Elton's life represented through metaphors. Multiple scenes in this movie aren't meant to be taken literally, but the film never goes over the top with any of them. Taron Egerton, as Elton John, does an absolutely fantastic Job and fully embodies Elton perfectly. I admire Rocketman because it sets the standard very high for musical biopics due to the fact that it tries something new. Never have I seen a movie based on an artist use their music to drive the plot forward. Many scenes in this film had me emotionally and I thoroughly enjoyed rocketman and thought it was near perfect. 9.5/10

Bohemian Rhapsody

While Bohemian Rhapsody can be enjoyable, it falls flat on many levels. It follows your A->Z biopic formula that we have all seen too many times. The film doesn't take many risks and tends to lose itself in telling a basic story than actually having an effect on anyone watching it. The only reason people enjoyed this film is because of Queen's music and an amazing lead by Remi Malek. Bohemian Rhapsody is simple, bland, and can be quite boring as it takes a basic formula and does nothing with it, besides follow it. 5.8/10

After seeing the high user ratings, I had high hopes for this film and I was not disappointed. The Greatest Showman stars Hugh Jackman who plays a real man P.T. Barnum and how he "changed" entertainment. Speaking of entertainment, this film boasts with it. Although it suffers from being too cliche and corny, The Greatest Showman has stunning visuals, acting, and fantastic music. Everything plays out very nicely in this film and although it has multiple sub-plots, it is is very easy and fun to follow. 8/10

CGI is great and there are some fantastic action scenes Fallen Kingdom is a whole new take on the series. Unfortunately, it's an overly complicated mess about money and dinosaurs and this film doesn't serve a purpose. There are poor supporting characters but at least the main characters can sort of shadow that. I'm sorry, it just doesn't feel like a Jurassic film even though I thoroughly enjoyed the start and the end.

Although it can be overdramatic and its story is similar to the original, it is still a thriller. An entire group against one beast is a fantastic way to go. Feels like every Jurassic movie is something different from its predecessor. This survival episode adds suspense for the audience. Although the acting could've been better and it is a little cheesy, it's still its own story that pays a respect to the audience and the original by bringing Alan Grant back which is a fantastic character.

A popcorn thriller that is very well executed, suspenseful and amazing, The Hunger Games was my favourite movie at one point. You would think that since the games start 3/4 of the way in the film, the first 75% would be boring, but no, everything is entertaining and very well organized with memorable written all over this film. The Lorax is a forgettable experience because of the lack emotion this movie has. The characters are forgettable and poorly used and they invent a whole new world that wasn’t even in the Lorax book. I enjoyed it, but this movie just adds random future concept elements that don’t suit the theme of the story well. Rating: C

Real Steel is a silly, fun, serious and enjoyable film. I had a lot of fun fun watching this for good reasons. The characters are good, but the characters are not used properly, so unpredictable at times which could be good or bad. I should also point out how overly dramatic this film was, there’s some scenes you need to turn your head away from because the acting can be bad and hard to watch. But I’m not gonna lie saying it was bad, I really enjoyed and loved it, but critically I cannot say it’s the best.

Ready Player One is without a doubt one of the best movies of the year, for the very reason that it stands out from the crowd. I could’ve not been more entertained when watching this film, there are next to zero sluggish moments and parts will you will turn your head way. Although the casting could have been better, this movie still has parts where you will go “wow” that’s some really good acting. But apart from that, Ready Player One is absolutely beautiful because of the gorgeous CGI this movie has to offer. The Story (the most important aspect) is very well thought out, but with that comes some confusion and parts that will have you maybe asking your friend what’s going on; other than that: the story is very good and very fun. “Ready Player One” would fall under the “Amazing” category.

Pixar’s newest movie has been the best they have hadn’t in years, beating out: Finding Dory, The Good Dinosaur and Cars 3. Coco is one stellar performance (literally) that is one you don’t want to turn your head away from. An amazing story, characters and animations, although Coco is a little draggy, it is all worth it in the end. Coco is a true masterpiece that I can’t imagine being forgotten.

Lets see here, well there are zero improvements over 1 and 2. The whole brother thing is really bland and feels rushed. User Score4Nick3
Mar 2, 2018
The only good things Illumination "Sing" gives us are: Good action, animation, and story basis. Other than that, Sing is a rushed movie on so many aspects. One being that the whole story changes because of something so stupid and unrealistic (an eyeball falling out of a lizards head), they should have put more thought into that. Another being that they use animals instead of humans, and they don't even act like Animals. Disney's "Zootopia" at least follows the basis that they are still animals, even though they are basically human, they still have animal traits that have a roll on the story of Zootopia, Sing falls short in that. The characters really feel bland and not interesting and hard to love. Sing is one movie that is very forgettable and Illumination better pick up their act soon or just stick to Despicable Me, and even that they can't do. Sorry, but Sing is not for me at all, and it's a very bad movie thats hard to even enjoy.

The Emoji Movie is a huge mess, with a lackluster story, odd characters, and bad acting, this film still has some positives. For my first viewing, it's fair to say that I hated this movie, and my original rating on Metacritic was 2/10. After Watching it again, I liked it way more. I found a lot of parts to be good, a lot of great action, and pretty well-used characters (although Rose is very irritating). Now to the cons, the story is all over the place focusing on 3 things in one movie, so it's very crammed. This film also doesn't really have a goal, but with that, I still found some enjoyment in this. Rating: C-

Cars is very mixed, it's a little childish but I have a huge soft spot for this film. Cars gives us very memorable Characters, all helping the main Character (Lightning McQueen) find his true self. Cars is great in many ways, and it's hilarious and enjoyable. The main Con of this film is the story, Lightning simply wants to win a race then becomes a respectful character later on, which we don't know. But other than that okay story Cars is great and fun. Mar 1, 2018
Cars 2 is enjoyable, no doubting it, but with that comes complete stupidity. We watch the first film trying to like Lightning, then we do eventually like and appreciate Lightning McQueen in the end, then Cars 2 comes along and makes Mater (a slightly irritating character voiced by Larry the Cable Guy, which says a lot) the main character. This is a spy movie, not a race movie which is sad because the movie is about Cars. They make the World of Cars look weird and is a total insult to the Cars Trilogy. Luckily Cars 3 ignores the events of this movie. Rating: F

User Score4Nick3
Feb 18, 2018
*Minor Spoilers* Cars 3 is probably the most controversial Pixar film, because it belongs to a mixed franchise. But surprisingly, Cars 3 is the best of the series easily. Cars 3 has more in its mind than Lightning McQueen simply winning a race, but also trying to prove himself worthy to stay in the sport he loves, then becoming a mentor to Cruz Ramirez (Cristela Alonza) later. The story is great, so are the characters. Cruz is a nice addition to the trilogy; there are also a lot more new characters like Sterling (Lightings new sponsor voiced by Nathan Fillion), Jackson Storm (An unexplained protagonist trying to throw Lightning of his game voiced by Armie Hammer), Smokey (Doc Hudson's old crew chief, who later becomes Lightnings Crew Chief voiced by Chris Cooper), and a lot of other old racers. Almost everything in this movie is great, Cars 3 has great race scenes, outstanding animation, a great story, amazing movie trailers, and a fabulous musical score (composed by Randy Newman). Although the story is predictable, Cars 3 is a great closure to a very lopsided trilogy, it's the Cars 2 we asked for, and it's great because it pays a huge respect to Paul Newman and the original Cars Movie.
