Yes, there’s sex and blood and guts, but the sensitivity—notably absent from Snyder’s work since Zack Snyder’s Justice League—makes a welcome return here. What begins as a tale of vengeance evolves into a nuanced exploration of the grieving process with all of its messy flaw.

The cast imbues these characters with considerable personality, while the show’s writers lend the dialogue a poetic lilt and cadence—a winsome choice that honors Norse mythology’s roots in spoken verse.

Overall, Twilight of the Gods is quite enjoyable. Sigrid is a fantastic lead character, and it's great to see a strong female lead who is allowed to seek revenge and have a beautiful romance (two-fold, in fact). That isn’t to say that this element doesn’t lack issues, because some very minor elements felt unnecessary.

Diehard Zack Snyder fans will love Twilight of the Gods, animation lovers will be able to appreciate the craft that went into making it, and as long as you make sure to not think while watching it, there is a chance you will end up liking most of its eight episodes.

Grading on the curve of Zack Snyder's recent lackluster projects, Twilight of the Gods is a stimulating retelling of Norse and Viking folklore with a deliciously messy drama at its core. Unfortunately, much of its riffing isn't in service of its story, but instead justifies its “mature” contents.

If there is anything worthy of the audience’s attention, it’s the voice acting, which deserves better visuals. .... The animation style, too, is unremarkable.

The saga is chock-full of larger-than-life characters who seem plenty interesting, but short on the patience it’d take to actually get to know them. As a result, it rings hollow. .... After a while, I realized I was no longer totally following what was happening, in large part because I’d stopped caring enough to make the effort.
