Those Who Can't

They’re like truffle pigs, rooting for humor, and they find it with a frequency that’s damn impressive. It’s not subtle, it’s not realistic, and it’s not reinventing the wheel. It’s just plain old funny—relentlessly, defiantly funny.

These situations are, of course, the bare-bones means to a lot of mischievous and seemingly improvised ends, much of it very funny.

While the characters sometimes border on cartoonish, they also manage to showcase an underdog quality that will have the audiences rooting for them anyway, and they’re somewhat grounded by the rest of the cast, including librarian Abbey Logan (Maria Thayer).

[Those Who Can't] is a bit better than “Teachers,” because it’s disgusting.... It goes in big on gross-out humor, crass puns and general raunchiness. But it does so with some originality, thanks to the core three performers and a well-deployed supporting cast.

The joke is that the teachers of Smoot High have never grown up so they interact with the students as peers. This is supposed to make the endless cycle of scheming and abuse hilarious, but it's far too familiar to be anything but exhausting. And a little bit depressing.

The performers in Those Who Can’t are probably nice people--they’re clearly smart, even if their show’s concept is woefully derivative.

Watching Those Who Can’t is like being stuck in Saturday detention. It feels like forever.
