I'm 4 seasons in and its a mixed bag so far. Only the core 5-6 cast regulars seem to wear plot armour and although its titled as being the first long form TV series it's mostly a "problem of the week" mixed with 2-3 episode arc storylines. Overall watching such a ruthless and cruel character as Anthony basically doing his job is quite a downer. Yes there are upsides but the reality is you are watching a bully sometimes cry about having just murdered his own friends for some reason or another. The writing and production quality is a real mixed bag here with many episodes failing to keep the show compelling to stay with. Season 1 feels like a flash in the pan into terms of qualiy the rest of the show struggles to reach.

So, the Sopranos series The Sopranos is an undeniably iconic American crime drama series that has become a benchmark for high-quality television since its release (and this is 1999 for a moment). Created by David Chase, the series tells the story of Tony Soprano, the boss of an Italian-American mafia family from New Jersey, who tries to combine violent criminal activities with family life and personal psychological problems.I like that almost all the characters don't look like waffles, each character causes me mixed feelings - from disgust to sympathy."The Sopranos" marked the beginning of the era of the "golden age of television", setting a high bar for the quality of the script, direction and acting. The series abandoned the traditional episodic format in favor of a long, somewhat tedious narrative that requires patience and engagement from the **** is important to note that the Sopranos is not just a story about the mafia, but the silhouette of a man who found himself at the top of the criminal world, but paid a huge personal price for it.Tony Soprano (the main character) is a charismatic and intelligent leader who outwardly seems strong and successful, but inside suffers from panic attacks, depression and internal conflict between the roles of mafia, father, husband and son. His power is based on cruelty, betrayal and constant threat, which leads to estrangement from his family and the inability to build real trusting relationships (not only between his wife and children, among others).I like that the series shows that the mafia is not a romance. The only things not shown here were luxury living, shoes just bought from their expensive boutique in Italy and many other things. They don't romanticize the mafia here, but show how harsh reality is, where there is no place for ideals and friendship: everyone is for himself, and any connections are more business than personal. Even Tony's family becomes not a source of support, but a place for new conflicts.Tony's internal conflict is an attempt to combine the incompatible - to be a good son, father and husband, but at the same time remain a ruthless mafia boss. With his mother, he has problems, his mother is not capable of love and **** Soprano family is seemingly ordinary, but in fact deeply dysfunctional. (Carmela's wife suffers infidelity for the sake of material well-being, the children suffer from a lack of attention and support, and Tony's mother is the source of his psychological trauma) The price of Tony's power and wealth is loneliness, mental disorders, and broken relationships with loved ones. The series honestly shows that the path to the top in the world of crime inevitably leads to inner emptiness, dehumanization and the inability to be truly happy.I remember very well the moment where Tony says, "Our mothers, they're like bus drivers. No, they're the buses themselves. They bring us here, drop us off, and drive on. They continue on their way. And the problem is that we're trying to get back on the bus instead of letting it go." is a very interesting phrase. The phrase, of course, embodies a metaphorical reflection on the role of the mother in human life and the difficulties of emotional liberation from parental **** mother here is a symbol of the path, destiny and life route. She "brings" me, her child, to a certain stage of life, provides a start, support, upbringing and personality formation. But then she "moves on" - continues on her own path, making us independent. It's scary to realize at a young age that this is the inevitable separation of the child from the mother, the transition to adulthood and responsibility for oneself. The main problem, which Tony emphasizes, is that we often cannot let go of this "bus" - that is, we cannot free ourselves from the influence and control of the mother (and not only dad, grandma, grandpa), from emotional dependence, from attempts to return to the old, childish relationship, where the mother was the center and a support.I think "The Sopranos" is deservedly considered a masterpiece.

This show is actually pretty bad. I guess when it came out it seemed fresh or something, even though it's a made for TV, Scorcese rip off, mixed with a melodramatic, soap opera. Talk about dumb dialogue. The writing has aged the worst of all the various aspects of the show. The premise itself is built to run aground. Add to it the obvious fanaticism the writers seem to have for murderous Italian criminal organizations, and it becomes eye rollingly embarrassing. Besides Tony murdering and beating his enemies, most story lines go nowhere and reveal nothing of any interest. It's trying so hard to act like it is roasting certain sacred cows. It is childlike in it's attempt at biting satire. Ultimately, it reinforced dumb stereotypes about women, minorities, college students, even psychiatrists. Mostly, the show displays sick people acting like normal folks, thus humanizing them. It's not only boring, bland, and redundant, but it's a stupid fantasy.

Quite simply the finest TV show I have ever watched. How I slept on this show for 20+ years (it started in 1999) is beyond me. However, in some ways, I am glad I did. In an age of immediate abundance and confusion of what to watch/binge, what an absolute triumph of casting, writing, and acting, it really doesn't get any better than this. Having finished the entire 7 seasons in a month, I will miss this show like there is a hole in my life. Goldolphini, Falco, and crew I doth my cap.

To describe HBO's The Sopranos as a simple television series would be an understatement of grand proportions. It is a narrative triumph that revolutionized television drama and took it into a dimension unexplored before its inception. The magic it unfurls is akin to capturing lightning in a bottle, a phenomenon that is not merely a show, but a reflection of life itself. As someone who initially wasn't invested in the crime genre, the series was nothing more than a matter of curiosity at first. I found myself watching episodes out of order, intrigued by the hype and acclaim surrounding it. Little did I know then, I was embarking on a journey that would reshape my perception of television and leave indelible imprints on my mind. One of the show's strongest points lies in its characters - fully realized, flawed, and intensely human. James Gandolfini's portrayal of Tony Soprano is nothing short of masterful, earning him a rightful place in the pantheon of unforgettable television characters. The dynamics between him and his wife, Carmela Soprano, played exquisitely by Edie Falco, are both heart-wrenching and electrifying. The complexity of their relationship offers an unparalleled examination of marital struggles, power dynamics, and existential crises. Similarly, supporting characters like the manipulative Livia Soprano, the grumpy yet amusing Junior, the troubled Christopher Moltisanti, the eccentric Paulie 'Walnuts' Gualtieri, and the tragic but complex Salvatore Bonpensiero all add unique hues to this intricately woven narrative. This isn't just a story about the mafia. This is about the American Dream in all its dappled, sometimes ugly, reality. It's about the complexities of human existence, about family, loyalty, ambition, guilt, and redemption. In many ways, The Sopranos is a modern retelling of the epic stories that have captivated humanity for centuries - it is our generation's answer to the likes of the Bible, the Iliad of Homer, and Shakespearean tragedies. In terms of storyline, The Sopranos stands as a paragon of narrative excellence. The intricate plot, coupled with rich character development, keeps you on the edge of your seat, while the thematic depth implores you to think, to question, and to introspect. The earlier seasons (1-4) are particularly powerful, although seasons 5 and 6 also have standout episodes that are truly unforgettable. One cannot discuss The Sopranos without acknowledging its brilliant musical choices. The soundtrack is a character in itself, perfectly encapsulating the show's mood, its cultural backdrop, and the characters' emotional arcs. The way the music and visuals synergize to tell the story is truly remarkable. The Sopranos is not just a viewing experience; it's a phenomenon that demands to be felt, understood, and treasured. The bar it set during its time is so high that even its contemporary, Breaking Bad, while extraordinary in its own right, does not quite match it. The Sopranos, with its unrivaled chemistry, spectacular performances, and profound storytelling, remains a titan in the world of television. In conclusion, words can only do so much justice to the artistic brilliance that is The Sopranos. It is something that must be experienced first-hand in its full glory, a masterpiece that redefines the possibilities of the medium and leaves a lasting impact long after the final credits roll. It is a testament to the power of television storytelling that continues to resonate and inspire. Truly, The Sopranos is an enduring classic, a phenomenon that remains unmatched.

From my point of view, The Sopranos is one of the greatest TV series in history. I have already re-watched it for 4 times, and every time it gets better. The plot, the characters, it's all perfect. You cannot forget any of The Sopranos characters, they are too true, you can love some of them or hate them, they are so well-developed and the authors paid attention to all small details, so there are no good or bad characters, you can only choose them by yourself. The characters were so true, so I started to find similarities between them and people whom I know IRL. Everyone in this show has his personality, his problems, and even some characters that pop up only once on the screen. It's fascinating. If you still haven't watched The Sopranos, you should immediately do this .

Probably my favorite TV series of all time. Rewatching this in 2023, I'm not sure anything has surpassed the quality and consistency since, after more than 20 years. The plotlines are interesting, acting amazing, comedy can be hilarious. I always believed too much focus was on the ending and not enough on... everything else.

Basically, the greatest show, or piece of media ever made. They'll study this show 2000 years from now, like we study the Odyssey. I say this as objectively as I can, this show is to TV as, say, the Mona Lisa is to painting. This cannot really be argued unless you have some kind of personal vendetta against the concept. There's no way this deserves any less than a 9.8, unless you consider that there's deliberate downvoting by people who don't like some of the vulgarity and crudeness of the concept. This show isn't really even about the mafia. It's about life, and family, itself. The mafia is the stage on which this concept is presented. Nothing has ever or will ever come close. The only people who criticize it probably don't like the toxicity of the main characters, but I think that's the point, the show how bad that mentality is. But given our current culture of sterilization, this is receiving unfair low ratings.

Being a mix of Crime Drama, family sitcom and psychoanalysis The Sopranos is truly an experience of its own boasting a decent run time and not being afraid to bow when its curtain is called. This is true a unique experience in cinema as the writers of the show manager to make you simultaneously hate and love the antics of the sopranos cast. It rare that a show can make you sympathize the with woes of character in one breath before making you disgusted by their actions in the next. It truly masterful how the team behind the sopranos was able to invest so much emotion in characters who are considerably horrible people. It was a joy to watch even though my only gripe is that show seems to run on a little long in the 5th season. If you haven't seen I would recommend you do so soon, the hbo max subscription is well worth it.
