The Observer (UK)
The script, by creator Paul William Davies (For the People; Scandal), is crisp, biting and often hilarious, if at times slightly overblown, as when security detail Colin repeats his interest in Kylie Minogue, the dinner’s star turn.

“Fun” is absolutely the watchword of this comic thriller.

Thoroughly enjoyable murder mystery. Keeps you on the edge of your seat and second-guessing yourself. And I didn't figure out who did it, which is rare for me. Everything's here, from the quirky detective and bumbling law enforcement to a colourful cast of weirdo suspects. Loved it just as much as Knives Out.

I thought this was an amazing show. Granted I thought the whole gay-president thing was a bit “extra” (as Netflix does) it didn’t take away from the plot. The characters were all amazing. I can’t recommend this enough as I was hooked from the start. Detective Cupp was A+++

“The Residence” never achieves the same frothy fun that Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out” series so effortlessly does except for its last Christie-perfect episode, but it’s still quite a bit of fun.

I can’t speak to whether “The Residence” works as an actual whodunit. .... But regardless of where it all ends up, watching Cupp working through her leads — and getting folks to fess up to lesser crimes while nattering darkly about birds — makes for a pretty good time.

While it’s often amusing and aided mightily by a magnetic performance from star Uzo Aduba, the whodunit struggles to carve out a distinct identity in a genre that’s become increasingly crowded of late.

The series just generally lacks snap, panache, style, verve, or whatever you want to call it. It's the pudding without the proof, less than the sum of its parts.

The complete lack of protagonists that anyone would have a reason to care for is the final nail in The Residence's coffin, rendering it a murder with no stakes, no momentum and no justice demanding to be served.

10/10 must watch. Clever, funny. Well cast, well written, well shot. If you enjoy witty whodunits that keep you guessing, here you go.

This wasn't that bad. Interesting plot and twists. It probably could have been done in six episodes instead of 8. Characters were fun and the switching between real-time and other times was interesting. It wasn't the best because. There were weaknesses. It's long. It digresses. It loses clarity at times. Cupp is weird at times - it's hard to act interested all the time. All in all, we'd say "give it a try. You may like it."

Extremely average. It tries so desperately hard to be knives out with a sprinkle of Wes Anderson, but ends up being rambling and contrived. The attempt at sharp, witty dialogue comes off as poorly executed. Could easily have been half the episodes or simply a normal length film. It ends up being quite obvious that the over arching theme was a racial hierarchy where women of color are at the top (smart, helpful, polite etc), followed by men of color (accepted but submissive/in the background), and white women (also accepted but loud and rude), and finally white men (annoying, dumb, unneeded). Unfortunately, it feels forced instead of organic to the point trying to be made and just ends up being one thing in a list of ideas that don’t quite work.

Amazing set design, with incredible CG of the house layouts for good visual demonstrations. Good sound design that helped accent every situation. A twisty mistery full of red hearings. Unfortunately, the rest of the show is extremely irritating. The characters are all caricatures and flat with specific traits being highlighted, with many being outright sexist. The plot is full of constant holes if you're familiar with any of the topics brought up, making explanations only work in this fantastical setup world. Finally the setting is just bad. Its supposed to be the White House, but the only thing going that way is the physical building. None of the people behave as their real life counterparts do and it comes across as a constant political signaling and it's so, damn, annoying.

Unrealistic woke garbage. Couldn’t get through the first episode. If it’s a comedy then the characters should be outrageously funny. (they aren’t). If it’s a drama make it so that people can relate to on some level (we can’t). Gotta be on antidepressants to enjoy this ride.
