I couldn’t get through the first episode and the black woman’s monologue. Not believable and bad acting. Doesn’t bode well not bode well for the rest of the series.

The Haunting of Hill House is genuinely one of the worst series I've ever seen. It's boring with endless dialogue, has forgettable characters, all the siblings have the same emo personality, nobody stands out, and the disorganized plot doesn't help because if I don't know who they are, how can I feel bad for them if I don't even know what happened to them? I didn't even get past episode 2. Overrated as ****

I don't understand the praise this show gets. The writing is atrocious. The story could have been told in 3, maybe 4 episodes but was stretched with so much filter into ten 60+ minutes episodes. 80% of the show doesn't add to the plot at all. I get that horror isn't a genre historically known for good writing or acting but so much of this show is hard to watch. We only finished the series because we had heard good things and kept hoping it would get better. The wake episode should just be skipped altogether. The cinematography is completely different then the rest of the series and the constant panning made me nauseous.

The final episode was hard to watch — it almost made me cry. It’s powerful, it’s beautiful, and I’m really glad I stayed with the show until the end.

Starts slow, with some handsomely portrayed but sluggish character showcases before the tension ratchets up in the middle. Really good twist anchors the whole thing. Heartbreaking story. Good scares. Earns its reputation as a scary good time.

Fantastic Horror drama. The acting is great and the CGI is good enough. The plot is compelling and ties up really well by the end of the series. A must watch on Netflix. It's a pity the sequel was never as good.

The first episode is kind of a mess; but I stuck with it and there was certainly a lot to like. Especially for a fan of psychological horror. However, there is a lot to not like as well. This show is stuffed to the brim with emotional filler. Long monologues from characters that I find completely unnecessary. It all felt like an attempt to get viewers to become more emotionally connected to all of the characters. It wasn't very effective though and by the end of the show, I only really cared about the family in the flashbacks (the family of the past). But their fate was already sealed, so caring about them didn't matter much. The family in the present mostly had pretty unlikeable characters. I liked the dad and Luke but the rest of them weren't all that likeable. Moving on: the show has a few jump scares and unsettling moments. I really like the way that some of the characters can be totally taken out of reality and tricked by the Hill House. However, the rules/reasons/circumstances for everything is kind of a mess. There are many plot holes or unexplained elements by the end of this show. I don't really understand the ending either. Like, this house is totally evil and needs to be burnt down. End of story. If you die there is your soul stuck there? And is it a miserable afterlife? Because it seems to me that it would be. If you die at Hill House, your soul is being trapped in this awful place rather than going to where ever it should go once you die. And if my parents souls were stuck there, I would figure out a way to destroy the place. Additionally, there are typical horror tropes where characters don't tell each other what they are seeing and therefore, no collective knowledge is gained and that enables the show to continue the course it is on. The mother keeps her mouth shut about her mental state far too long; the Dudley family keeps their mouths shut far too long; and the rest of the family keeps their collective heads in the sand for far too long as a consequence. But that didn't bother me so much because that is kind of a necessary evil for horror shows/films. What bothered me most was the confused delivery of the story. The long monologues, the emotional manipulation, and the broken theme of the show: which is that the house is a metaphor for the family's trauma. But that can't be true because the ghosts are real. It all just kind of makes no sense. For instance, why did a ghost come to the funeral home and destroy the forever house all of a sudden? Why did Nell appear to Theo and Shirley as they were driving to the house? So many events like that are not really explained. What about all of the time travel insanity like with the bent neck lady? What the hell does it mean that Nell was the bent neck lady all along, torturing herself throughout her life? Does it add anything to the story? It doesn't seem like it does. It's just another way the house tortures you, is that it? PS: The show isn't really very left wing/woke, if anyone is curious. However, I did notice that most relationships were interracial and then one of the characters is lesbian. This kind of stuff wouldn't bother me if it felt organic but these days it almost never does. Because these are deliberate decisions pushed by ESG scoring as well as production outfits and even award shows such as the Oscars. They all have DEI rules that really are just social engineering and for someone like myself who notices these kind of things, this show is not a horrible offender. It doesn't push any direct political messages.

Feel sorry for those that said this series is full of cheap jumpscares. The story is so deep and well written for characters development and for a horror series, i dont think the jumpscare is even enough lmao. If u could take ur time to slowly enjoy the show it would have been different. The best horror series u could ever ask for, meaningful and deep and moderate amount of scares. Very well balanced

This series is really insane, Mike Flanagan definitly know how to catch the viewers, the quality of the cinematography is perfect. I'm not a big fan of long monologue usually, but every ones in The Haunting of Hill house are really interesting and usefull. Really hard to find negative points.

Although drama does more often how the space it is still a really powerful definitive installment in the horror genre. Despite it's treacherous pace in some parts(the first two episodes and most of the finale) what's there essentially is a horrific tragedy of a traumatized family that made a lethal real estate decision. The scares are delivered with satisfying conviction with familial drama worth just as compelling as the supernatural threat in it's center. Could've been a great show but due to hugely consequential missteps it lands as a well made good scare that aspire for greater philosophical highs than it can fulfill.

Where this show lacks in scares, it more than makes up for in cringey dialogue and never-ending monologues. Every character sounds like they’re trying to reach their essay’s word minimum. It’s really bad.

The main problem with The Haunting of Hill House is that it can't make up its mind about the kind of story it wants to tell. On the one hand, it genuinely tries to be a metaphorical drama about trauma, depression, suicidal thoughts and other heavy subjects. On the other, it's not metaphorical at all, because the ghosts are framed as being real. It's not done elegantly, it doesn't leave you wondering, it outright states that ghosts are real and that the ghosts are what leads to trauma. Not a difficult childhood, not a death in the family, no; it's all about the ghosts. As a result, all possible points it could've made are invalidated, because—surprise, surprise—it's all just about the paranormal presence. So, it could've been a decent drama, but it's not because "it's all ghosts, man." Then maybe it's a good ghost story? No, it's just as mediocre as a ghost story. Sure, there's some impressive imagery, some skilful camerawork and genuinely dreadful moments, but overall there's nothing new about it. Outside of a couple of exceptions, they pretty much look like zombies. There are very few cases where ghosts cause a genuinely disturbing, uncanny valley kind of an effect; most of the time they look like corpses, and it gets boring very fast. But the worst part is that, while the story bits work in isolation, they don't come together to form a coherent and sensible narrative. Can ghosts kill people? It seems they can, but how and why remains unclear. Why didn't the family move out of the house, after dozens of cases of their kids waking up screaming in the night, let alone the fact that the parents themselves see the ghosts too? Hell, how do these ghosts work? Some of them seem to represent specific people, others just appear as illusions or hallucinations. These questions and many others like these bothered me a lot during the viewing. The Haunting of Hill House falls short of becoming the smart and chilling show it could've been, instead of relying on illogical storytelling and simplistic imagery, and where it tries to start a complicated conversation, it ends up copping out of it with "it was all ghosts."

story? check. cinematography? check. originality? check. horror? check. acting? check. characters? check. Everything about this series is brilliant, making it truly one of the best tv shows of all time, and far ahead of everything else in its genre.

Having moved into Hill House Hugh and Olivia Crain, alongside their five children, begin to experience increasing paranormal phenomena, resulting in a tragic loss and the family fleeing from the house. More than twenty-five years later they reunite after another tragedy strikes, and they are forced to finally confront the lasting effects Hill House has had on all of them. The central mystery, which is gradually unveiled as we see events from different characters points of view, is certainly intriguing and at times this show can be genuinely creepy (one scene in particular gave me goosebumps!). The only slight let down was the final couple of scenes, which felt rather at odds with the rest of the show, but it wasn’t enough to spoil my overall enjoyment and this is more than worth a watch for horror fans.

Once you understand everything going on its amazing, incredibly written, very 'deep' i suppose and I was just overall blown away. Has tiny little details in the story too and it all adds up to a very satisfying and incredible ending. All the individual characters story's are amazingly written and connect up with each other very well to crate a very good dynamic and all development majorly throughout the series. Its a slow phsycalogical horror thats scarier than anything else I've watched. Its 100x better than bly mannor which I watched before and would still rate at least a 8/9 out of 10 so that can give you an idea of how good this is. Its just an amazing show and blew me awayaway.

The Haunting of Hill House is different type of horror series. It was very different experience. First few episodes are slow, but things soon built up and you start learning all the horrifying secrets. I like the fact the series doesn't solely depend on jump scares and is able to create an atmosphere that draws you in and scares you to the core. The story is told using the characters' personal experiences, almost every episode unfolds the perspective of a separate important character, adding bits and pieces to the story. The scenes are intelligently created and demand all your attention (lots happen in the background). Overall, a truly modern horrifyingly experience which may leave you scarred for a while.

What starts out as an interesting story about a family living in a haunting mansion, becomes a thriller about them being devoured. Up until the point where Luke grabbed, it is exhilarating and build up very well. If only it didn't take a freaking nosedive in the final two episodes. What's strong in this show is the storytelling. You feel like you understand the characters and their struggles. Well except for the father and mother because they have massive feathers up their ass. What's not so strong is the overly self-indulgent explaining of the simplest thing. The moment someone enters a scene it is to start off with some story from their past no one asked for. It was exhausting to watch! The final two episodes do this especially a lot, but also remove tension by injecting contrived plots points and non-logical 'Revelations.' Unfortunately this leaves the show without a satisfying climax, and leaves a lesser taste in the mouth. I give it a 5/10 for it being underwhelming towards the end.

This series is horror, done right. You can read the endless sea of other positive reviews for more detail, but the horror, characters, plot and production are all fantastic. The Haunting of Hill House stands out to me as one of the best shows of the decade, and a highlight of recent times in the horror genre.

I watch so many horror movies that they generally bore me. This series has me on the edge of my seat. Spooky with an interesting ending. After I finished it, I watched it again!

if you looking for good horror story series than you like this **** is very well created series and very good and talented cast.

I don't why they wasted money paying for the book rights. It bears little relation to the sourcebook aside from the name. If they stuck to the haunted house and the kids it would have been fine, but no, instead we got about 8 episodes of tedious family drama. Episode 6 was one long shot straight out of amateur theatre class. Boring. Not very acted either unless perpetual angst is your thing. Nope, not good.

This show is phenomenal. I hope that they will decide to release a second season!

It's whole consistency is cheap jump scares and political shilling. The writing hardly passes for a Netflix show and the direction appears aimless and rushed. It is not really worth the bother.

Mike Flanagan's work is remarkable. He created tension and terror without the most basic cliché of this genre: the jumpscares. The photography is impressive, as is the entire cast.

Nothing original here. Essentially this is a drama series with a tiny bit of "horror" on the side. It's sort of about a haunted house, but mostly about a family who all struggle with their own individual battles. And it's quite annoying and drawn out. I cannot recommend. Because of the acting performances and great cinematography I give this show a 4/10. Otherwise I'd just give it a 2/10.

A series full of rich content, hard to find any negative points in this series.
