It makes you want to discover what drives him and where he’ll finally wind up. Dunst is the saving grace throughout a rollicking Season One that keeps delivering whenever she’s on screen. It may well turn out to be the TV performance of the year, with some very able assists from Pellerin, Rodriguez, Ditto and Levine.

At first, On Becoming a God is strange and funny enough to merit a leading turn as good as Dunst’s. ... But the creative team soon runs out of new things to say about FAM, and about most of these characters. There’s some entertaining interplay between Krystal and Cody, and the way she learns to use all of her powers against him. But what you see in the first few episodes is mostly what you get throughout the season.

One of the best shows in this summer/fall season 2019. It's true that the story line is lined up with ubiquitous TV tropes (all-American back-against-the-wall win-against-all-odds, struggle between moral imperatives vs dire physical needs, 80's nostalgia, etc) and thinly written/cartoon-like characters (husband, Cody etc) and some bad acting (Ted Levine), but Kirsten Dunst is doing a phenomenal acting job, as does the actor in the supporting role of Ernie. Just that merits viewing. The script, despite the limitations mentioned above, is funny, refreshing while being "realistic" enough , well paced, and keeps us invested in the tribulations of our protagonist. In short, here is a nice little show that doesn't insult the intelligence of viewers (i'm looking at you "the Affair") while being entertaining.
