Mr. Pollan’s messages are important to hear and are engagingly presented in this series. Still, there’s a disconnect that’s never addressed.... The world’s poorest people--some seen in idyllic imagery here--have to devote long hours to basic subsistence, and the world’s relatively well off have the luxury to indulge in artisanal cooking. Yet applying his ideas across the whole range of human circumstances is a trickier subject than this pretty series wants to tackle.

More than being a definitive explanation of the issues it discusses, Cooked serves more as a launching pad for discussion, offering viewers discussion topics, if not enough information to exactly have that discussion. Most of the time, Cooked does just what it says Americans shouldn’t: It heaps too much on its plate.

Cooked is a fabulous documentary about the impact of cooking and it's techniques on humanity. Michael Pollan, the host and narrator, delivers thoughtful information about modern and ancient cuisine from different angles; some microscopic even. I thought the series was fascinating and done without being too scientific to interpret or too patronizing to it's audience. Well done.

The beautiful photography and intriguing locations are completely ruined by the obnoxious and condescending narration. The show is tries to maintain a politically correct veneer but at its core the message is paternalistic, misogynist, and at times overtly racist.

This is the story of a narcissist heteronormative man who believes he holds the truth about the history of human kind. From avoiding the realities of slavery in american history (supposedly, food brought black slaves and slave owners together in peace), to having the egocentrism to believe he can impose meat eating onto vegetarian AND change their life, to perpetuating patriarchal male ideals as well as gender inequalities, to cultural appropriation, to assuming that meat is the main food in all culture, Pollan really succeeds in showing us how narrow-minded and ignorant white privileged folks can be.
