The Night Digger is by no means an unalloyed masterpiece. It's director seems preoccupied with nuance to the detriment of narrative, and consequently much of the film looks like a triumph of mood over matter. [17 Jun 1971, p.75]

Players give excellent portrayals, but the picture is lacking in both setting and direction.

It begs for empathy for its tortured principals, but despite the clearly dedicated contributions of Patricia Neal, Roald Dahl, her scenarist-husband; Pamela Brown and a young newcomer, Nicholas Clay, the strain on credibility is a good deal more notable than the impact on the emotions.
