For his robust and handsome The Musketeer, Hyams enlisted veteran Hong Kong stunt coordinator Xin-Xin Xiong to stage a clutch of spectacular action sequences that are amusing in the imaginative intricacy of their bravura.

Its failure to be extraordinary is thus all the more cutting, and its redundancy all the more unforgivable.

Moves in fits and starts, with some crafty and credible fight choreography by Xin Xin Xiong on either side of the pretty but boring middle hour.

Appallingly flat.
25
An example of lazy, dumb and couldn't-care-less hack movie making.

The movie lacks the one thing that the classic "Three Musketeers" story can't do without: panache.

Unspeakably awful.

The Musketeer fulfils the minimum requirements in most departments, but is all throughout uneven: Witty lines are followed by stuff that feels like it was copy-pasted from a template script; good fight scenes are made less impressive by editing and too dark a setting; a decent cast is limited by a script that lacks depth or character development. Still, it remains watchable and at times even entertaining.

Incredible action scenes aside, there is really nothing to like about this movie. Even with Stephen Rea and Tim Roth as the villains, this film is still bad. But damn it, these action scenes are SO GOOD! And that is the only reason why anyone in their right mind should watch it.
Honestly, I'm not big on action films unless the action is interesting and creative. The Musketeer has some of the most creative and well choreographed fight scenes I have seen in a long time. If they put half as much effort into telling a good story, this might have been a good film.
This film would normally get a 1 but the great action brings it up to a 4.
