Cronenberg has become known as a purveyor of body horror, in which the monstrous arises from within rather than without. The Brood cunningly turns this motif into a metaphor for psychotherapy itself, which seeks to dredge up and cast out the monsters haunting the unconscious.

The Brood sees the undisputed king of body horror honing his visceral eye, whilst at the same time offering up several truly iconic images that have quite clearly endured.

Perhaps David Cronenberg's most personal film. In it, he vents the horrors of divorce, psychoanalysis and separation from children; all that with the body horror concept of it. With everything and his ups and downs, it is a curiosity to be exploited.

Finally dipped into Cronenberg's early work and: Fascinating stuff! The Brood is a mix of social drama—more specifically, divorce drama—and body horror. The often graphic images and themes are further intensified by the strong focus on the child’s perspective. For me, The Brood can be viewed in two ways: First, as a sci-fi horror film with body horror elements, where mutant children hunt humans and kidnap other children. And second, as a raw reflection of a family crisis: We see signs of abuse on the daughter's back, alleged affairs, conversations with lawyers, and a once-loving couple locked in battle, with a bloody newborn between them. Cronenberg also hints that family trauma, domestic violence, and perhaps mental illness(?) are passed down through generations. As for how exactly Oliver Reed’s therapy works, I can't say. But it's definitely fun to watch him in action.

Cronenberg’s movie was an early showcase for his tense formal style and intellectual Grand Guignol. He displays a true shock-meister’s instinct by saving the worst for last. The result is a cinematic bad dream that generates recurring nightmares.

Powerful and disturbing on both a physical and mental level, The Brood is the first Cronenberg film to use name actors, and marked a significant progression in the director's exploration of biological horror.

Undoubtedly [Cronenberg's] best from this period and also the most troubling.

It's a strong theme, unfortunately undercut by faulty pacing and odd lapses in the tension. Still worth seeing for its latently political story and its gory special effects.

The Brood is an el sleazo exploitation film, camouflaged by the presence of several well-known stars but guaranteed to nauseate you all the same.

This is one of Cronenberg’s better films that has not aged well. Don’t get me wrong as this was a good movie although some of the film aspects could do with a modern touch. It was a touch slow and the lighting was horrible in places. The film is creepy and not too ridiculous unlike some other Cronenberg films. There are some scary scenes but nothing too petrifying which is a shame as this could have been a really scary film. It is well acted and the effects are well placed and well done. They didn’t explain what the treatment that they were using was ever and they should have said something about it at the beginning so there was more context. All in all I found this an okay but dated film.

Watchable, but with lots of bland scenes and psycho babble dialogue, What keeps it riveting are Oliver Reed and Samathan Eggar, They are magnetic, However , there are no real scares, The brood are silly looking, Especially wearing their colorful jumpsuits, That said, there are still some shocking practical effects involving Eggar.
