One of the family comedy treats of the season. [15 Oct 1993, p.6]

What you've got here is nothing more (or less) than a smartly recast 90-minute episode of the old show, and that, as longtime fans of the Hillbillies will tell you, can be more fun than a swim in the ce-ment pond. [15 Oct 1993, p.D18]

It is by no means the dopiest thing on the big screen.

If it works at all, THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES functions as a curio for a tube-fed generation nostalgic for the good old days when TV was still a safe place to hide.

Barely dusted off, the humourless stuff is served up straight - damned if it isn't a Hillbillies homage. [19 Oct 1993]

The plot, which features Lea Thompson as a gold digger scheming to marry Jed, is like something you’d catch on the USA Network at 4 a.m. But enough of beating a dead possum. After sitting through The Beverly Hillbillies, I now realize that the best tribute anyone can make to the pop detritus of our childhood is to let it rest in peace.

Four writers worked on the script, and they all should hang their heads in shame.

Now I should start this off by saying I've never seen the original TV show but I have seen this film several times since I was a kid and I have to say it's pretty damn funny. This spoofy reboot of a simple mud slinging family that stumbles upon some oil and moves to Hollywood is loaded with heart as well as some effective comedy hijinks. Jim Varney (Ernest), Erika Eleniak (Under Siege), Lily Tomlin (9 to 5), Cloris Leachman (Mary Tyler Moore show) and hunky Diedrich Barber (Miss Congeniality 2) steal the show. Only Lea Thompson( Back to the Future) and Rob Schneider (Hot Chick) are a little odd. Like I said the movie is funny and doesn't take itself seriously so neither should you. Budget: $25m
Domestic Box Office: $44m
Worldwide Box Office: $57m 7/10
