Rosson's moody photography and Rozsa's moving score further enhance this film noir masterpiece.

One of the great film noirs and a quintessential heist movie, a classic of American hard-boiled storytelling that, though endlessly copied, hasn't been bettered. [27 May 2005, p.C6]

A bit dark for my tastes, but you can't deny the power of the film. An excellent film noir.

One of the best-known examples of film noir, John Huston's Asphalt Jungle follows the trail of an infamous heist-meister, fresh out of jail, and his plans to pull off one last score before retirement. Sam Jaffe is cool-headed and convincing as the brains behind the operation, while a ragtag cast of backup anti-heroes pay the price as the whole thing slowly starts to unravel. A young Marilyn Monroe makes several scant appearances as nothing more than eye candy, still so green she only occasionally stops gazing straight into the camera. It's noteworthy that few characters are as black and white as the film stock, a trademark of the genre, even if their motivations ultimately prove sinister and selfish. A worthwhile slant on the heist picture that's crammed full of smoke and atmosphere, it expertly balances several competing characters and pays off every story, most with unusually dark consequences. Quite good, but not great, it creates some new conventions while bowing to many others.

The Asphalt Jungle is considered to be director John Huston's most brilliant and realistic crime drama. [10 May 1998, p.67]

Blood and trauma make an irresistible mix in John Huston’s The Asphalt Jungle.

Exciting and tautly directed – the lengthy robbery scenes are exemplary – it’s moody to the dying frame, emphasised by Harold Rosson’s lighting of trash-filled back-alleys and half-lit clip joints and Miklós Rozsa’s haunting theme music.

One of the first big caper films, this 1950 feature contributed much to the essence of the genre in its meticulous observation of planning and execution.

A competent (often overrated) thriller by John Huston about a group of crooks who plan a jewel robbery and how their characters determine the results.

This one bored me.
A bunch of jerks do a jewel heist, and it all goes to hell.
I didn't care about any of the characters, or the heist, or its' aftermath.
Only merits, effective cinematography, and seeing Marilyn Monroe in a small role.
