SummaryOff the coast of Delaware sits the cozy Plum Island where two families are locked in a struggle for power, as it has been for generations. The O'Flynn's, headed by patriarch Patrick O'Flynn approach the zombie plague with a shoot-to-kill attitude. The Muldoons, headed by Shamus Muldoon, feel that the zombies should be quarantined and kept 'alive,... Read More

Silly and not nearly scary enough, this does not rank as grade-A Romero, but the story unfolds efficiently and economically and it provides plenty of laughs.

This has definitely mad it's way onto my favorite zombie movies of all time, it provides action and laughs, and is ultimately enjoyable and cheesy, it may not be as intense as other zombie movies but it will entertain zombie loving maniacs.

Just an ok zombie. There was a lot of zombie attacks and killings. Once again though the ending was kind of iffy.

Still, even Romero's staunchest fans might conclude their hero is going through the motions here. Yes, almost like a zombie.

Variety
Steeped in fan-pleasing gore but woefully thin on ideas, originality (beyond new zombie-offing methods) or directorial flair.

The New York Times
Placidly photographed and lacking in urgency, "Survival" shows us the living flailing at fate and the dead just flailing.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch
A bland family-feud potboiler with no sign of the cook.

Orlando Sentinel
Survival of the Dead lacks the wit of "Zombieland," the polish and punch of last winter's "The Crazies," a remake of a Romero zombie picture from the '70s.

There are definitely better zombie films out there, especially from Romero also as I quite like him as a Director but this is not one of his great films. It focuses more on a fight between two bitter old men rather than a zombie apocalypse so it can hardly be called a zombie film at the end of the day. It has some good, and it did hold my interest, but at the end of the day there is just better films in the genre out there worth watching when comparing them, so perhaps give this one a miss.

A band of rogue militants that are attempting to escape a world overrun by the undead find themselves caught in the middle of a feud between two families when they land on a remote island in the latest entry of George Romero's epic zombie series. Here, Romero quarrels with the idea of whether or not the living dead can be domesticated and eventually cured, or whether they must be eradicated to avoid any future outbreaks. This debate fuels the ongoing struggle between the O'Flynns and the Muldoons, a battle which takes center stage over any of the zombie mayhem in the film. While it cannot be argued that Romero has not attempted any new and interesting ideas in LAND, DIARY, and now SURVIVAL, the execution of each of the films always falls short. The sixth installment never manages to generate any forward momentum, and the social commentary that is worked in to the plot is never fully developed or used to effectively impact the viewer. To put it bluntly, the film is completely uninteresting. There is no one left for the audience to relate to or sympathize with between the thieving soldiers and the two warring families. The man once known for discovering Horror's greatest make-up artist has settled for cheaply-made computerized effects once again, effects which are entirely unconvincing and immediately take the viewer out of the action. Still, what the gore lacks in quality, it makes up for in quantity, with numerous attack sequences filled with head explosions and multiple maulings by the rampaging ghouls. As hard as Romero fans may try to dispute it, SURVIVAL OF THE DEAD continues the downward trend of declining interest and bland filmmaking that has plagued the director's most recent efforts. -Carl Manes I Like Horror Movies

Romero is considered to be the master of the zombie films. If you look at his earlier work, you can actually see why. Dawn of the Dead and Night of the Living Dead are considered to be classics in the horror genre. However, in recent years, Romero came back to the genre that made him famous, and it wasn't for the best. His latest zombie movies have all been underwhelming and this one is no exception. Lousy acting, bad special effects, stupid characters, questionable character motivations and a zombie riding a horse are what describe the movie the best. It's dumb, it's boring and it ultimately has no reason to exist. At least the gore was good.

"Survival of Dead" is one dumb, cheap looking, and terrible B-zombie movie that looks like it was inspired from a video game. I'd suggest George A Romeo to stop directing silly zombie movies or get the **** out of Hollywood.
