A music journalist-turned-filmmaker, Jenkins had the hip-hop bona fides to guarantee “Sunday Best” would not be a white savior tale. Instead, his film reveals the authentic amity and steadfast values of an ally.

It’s a reminder of when civility, fair play and principles mattered, of when decent people of influence like Sullivan didn’t think twice about standing up to myopic bigots like Georgia Gov. Herman Talmadge.

“Sunday Best,” from director Sacha Jenkins (who died this past May), is a fine effort that explores Sullivan’s commitment to pushing back against network forces, sponsors and other interested parties who were opposed to the presence — the celebration, really — of Black people on the show.

For 23 years, the Ed Sullivan Show was the Sunday nite TV tradition for millions of Americans. He presented stars from every type of arts and culture, including Black singers. With some of the country still fervent about segregation, this was a risky maneuver. Despite threats from several angles, Sullivan was undeterred. This doc includes performances by many of the period’s greatest Black stars like James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner, the Supremes and the Jackson 5, along with a few rock legends (Elvis and the Beatles). Their performances serve as backgrounds for various stories about the progression of Black rights in our country. Sullivan’s biographical history in included, which also frames his acceptance and appreciation of all people. While it’s fun to reminisce about the show and enjoy the song excerpts, this film celebrates Sullivan’s bravery and determination, as part of his legacy of equality and our country’s fight for universal justice.
