Recollection or recounting are not what Owens is after here. The notion of a reimagining falls even further from the truth of this cinematic evocation and deep-welled benediction. “Jimmy” aims to be restorative. It aches to bestow joy to him and to make sure we see this young pensive artist as a Black gay man far from a vexing home.

The film’s nuanced moments are found in that encircling amity in which they all fight.

Even so, when all is said, and the oddly amusing has turned dangerous, you may still be wondering what shaped Eleni’s desires? Night Nurse leaves that and other questions nudged, but not nailed down.

Strung doesn’t exactly unravel, but it delivers more of the pleasures of a near-camp mash up than the emotional stakes of a psychological thriller.

Kiyoko didn’t come by her fan-given nickname, Lesbian Jesus, for nothing. Like Kiyoko’s videos, the movie wants to create space for romantic deliverance.

Writers Goldstein and Joe Kelly (his “Ted Lasso”/”Shrinking” colleague) attempt to cram a streaming season’s worth of character zigs — Jodie Whittaker plays Daniel’s incarcerated sister, Amy Sedaris appears as a too-kind hotel housekeeper — into a two-hour film. Alas, the landing isn’t smooth.

For all its paeans to flight (as well as a father’s celebration of his daughter’s big-screen possibilities), “Propeller” doesn’t soar, but it does reach a comfortable cruising altitude.

The easy feminism of winks and role reversals quickly wears thin.

Is God Is asks us to pay heed — in ways subtle and bold — to its comedy and anguish. It demands, without seeming to, that we watch to see, really see.

Parker the writer has tended to overload his screenplays with messages. He does some of that here, as well. Parker the director, however, is gifted with crews and capable actors and that shows, too. The members of his ensemble — especially Oyelowo — find ways to keep us guessing, and caring, to the end.
