Stigmata

I remember seeing this in the cinema when it first came out, but never really understood the story back then. I re-watched it a few days ago on Prime, and I thought it was really good. The bad reviews surprise me. Gabriel Byrne plays his character brilliantly I thought. He played roles like this, like no other. Interesting storyline. Lots of jump scares in places. Got me doing a Google search on the main storyline itself.

The film’s picture looks ‘interesting’, there are fast cuts and many visual effects. It seems like a typical nineties style at its best. Everything looked good but it could be seen as a little cheesy now. The sound was pretty good, not quite as good as I was hoping for though. The use of surround was what disappointed me. Still it was a nice and dynamic mix and certainly didn’t affect the enjoyment of the film. It was a very modern film but the problem with that is that they date quickly. Still it is a funky and stylish movie with a charismatic person as the main character. It is similar to The Exorcist (1973) but more of a thriller and less of a horror. There are some good bits but nothing that is really scary. It’s more the story and the characters that make it entertaining. Enjoyable movie that is a time capsule of the nineties and the mindset of people living into the new millennium.
