A very important episode for the Canon story. it was in 1999 so watch it with that in mind. Very good movie.

This movie is so criminally overhated, its far from perfect but its pretty good, first of the duel of fates, as well as the characters of Obi-wan, Darth Maul, and most of all Qui-gon are so cool in this movie, they are a little underused, which is sad, but its understandable why they do that, Anakin's upbringing and backstory was ultimately very neccesary, and sets up the rest of the story alright at least, I ultimately also don't mind Jar-Jar, but I understand the position of people who don't like him, overall though I do think the film does a great job of setting up what the galactic republic and Jedi functioned like, and the way they do it ultimately makes the rest of the trilogy better due to how well they established this

The best film in the Star Wars series. Those who give this film a 51 are Star Wars haters.

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate this one at all. It sets up the universe well and doesn't feel too slow-paced throughout, and the Darth Maul fight is absolutely incredible. However, I'm not a fan of Jar Jar Binks either.

This is one of the most dull and boring movies I have ever seen, and I am a big Star Wars fan. This movie spends far too much time on politics and not enough time on the action that Star Wars is known and loved for. The podrace and final duel are the only things that are worth watching in this entire movie, hence why I gave this a 2 as opposed to a 1 or a 0. You have to be brainwashed into liking this movie.

I can vividly recall seeing this back in '99 and really trying to convince myself that I liked it because I so wanted to. But ultimately I couldn't fool myself - it's just a poor script, CGI that really hasn't aged well, some of the poorest dialogue and acting that's truly awful. I watched it again a few years back and it hasn't improved in any way - the flaws are still apparent. I do appreciate the overall story and the podrace scene is pretty exhilarating. The score is also decent. I do understand the fanfare for the final lightsaber dual, but I find it to be over choreographed, and it just doesn't have the 'weight', tension and impact of the battles we see between Luke and Vader in Empire and Jedi. Also, for some people to score this movie a 10 is ludicrous - If this is a 10 then Empire must be a 25! A perfect score for TPM is just being dishonest, as would scoring it 0.

The new introduction to both new and familiar cast of characters in the STAR WARS universe is the best way to close out the 90s with and the lore, legend and laser swords that do not disappoint. And then there is Jar-Jar . . . Love it or Love to hate it - Phantom Menace is A New Hope of a New / Old generation!

Being my first Star Wars movie back in '99, I was the target audience Lucas supposedly made the film for. Gotta say it didn't really stick with me, though I suppose it had the desired effect in the end in making me want to buy all the Episode I Lego merch I could get my little fingers on. Frankly if it weren't for the distant fuzzy feelings associated with some of the set pieces and the genuinely good couple standout moments like the pod race or the Maul duel, Phantom Menace easily sits in the red. This movie desperately needed some emotion in it. It's really, really hard to rewatch without drowning in the boredom of stiffness in which a lot of the character dialogue is delivered. You'd have to be a serious lore fiend to even give half a **** about the politics and the universe which are the essential background to what's happening in the movie and why. I love me some empire building and political machinations but these are easily the lower points of the movie, and where it needed to shine the most with the relationships between Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon, young Anakin and Padme, it's too weakly delivered. As it stands in the trilogy it's competently portrayed and feels solidly like a Star Wars movie in the world George created, it's just not overly entertaining.

This is not a perfect movie by any stretch of the imagination but it is a movie that stretches the imagination in a way many movies won't even attempt, and for that I consider it an extremely important movie on a cultural level.

If not for the final fight with maul and the shootout in the castle with padme i really wouldn't care about this movie what so ever, its incredibly so and no i do not care about pod racing. Easily the worst of the prequels

I’m a Star Wars fan but I’ll be brief. Phantom Menace isn’t a bad movie and it’s definitely worth watching AS A PART OF STAR WARS SAGA. I think that Episode I is by far worst movie from George Lucas’ Star Wars movies. It isn’t a great movie but it’s a critical part of the Star Wars saga. It glues many things together and it introduced many things to the saga. I definitely recommend watching the Phantom Menace but don’t judge Star Wars because of it. Watch more, you’ll understand. The movies greatness lies in not the quality of the movie but in the greatness of the prequel trilogy. And finally the problematic part. The movie feels passive, slow and the plot didn’t **** me in (like the others did). It had it highs but it also had its **** a passive Star Wars production I’d except that it is very deep. Unfortunately, I didn’t feel especially that. The movie’s greatest high is introducing us to many new things. 7/10, 3.5/5

This was the first Star Wars film I ever watched and it did make me fall in love with the franchise. I'm a 90s baby, so the OG trilogy wasn't know to me at this point in my life and this film was everything. Years later, I now understand some of the hate. But it's no where near as bad as people make out.

Watching through Star Wars in chronological (story-wise) order has been a super interesting experience. The attention to detail, in the universe, costumes, choreography, cultures, and set designs between The Acolyte and Phantom Menace is uncompareable. Some standouts are the music, costumes, choreography, and seamless storytelling. It's amazing to see separate groups of people passionately following through on their beliefs. I feel that this is not present in today's movie culture. What docks some points are the disconnect between the mood of the movie and the Gungans. The jokes felt a bit misplaced and/or childish. But not bad enough to ruin the movie. Obi-Wan's character arc is amazing. Never realized how much I enjoyed Padmé's character in this movie. Compared to the modern in-your-face girlboss, she is a refined, powerful woman standing up for her people, willing to sacrifice herself for the cause. That last Obi-Wan vs Darth Maul fight choreography was the best I've seen in a long time. Bring back real stunt men instead of CGI. On to the next one! Don't watch Acolyte

Rather flat plot that tries to use different atmosphere and tone from the original trilogy. However the film is appreciated, varied in its scenes and embellished by the battle with Darth Maul

Not super entertaining, not a ton of memorable scenes, it feels kind of unnecessary. The acting isn’t great but the film looks fine visually and isn’t like catastrophically flawed. It just isn’t a very strong movie.

After playing Outlaws I thought of this game and decided to write a review. I LOVED this game as a kid. When I saw how poorly critics rated this, I don't understand why. I thought it was vey well done. My only complaint when I was playing this was some of the tedious jumping sections and the fact that there was no playable podracing! that was a bummer! but the actual podracing game thatcame out alongside it scratched that itch. and battle for naboo on the n64 was great too! star wars has so many great games in it. such rich lore. it's a shame that outlaws is so bad and that disney has tanked the franchise.

This is crackerjack entertainment with a sneaky good plot and emotional resonance. Yes, it is awkward and wince-inducing at times, but there's too much good here to throw the whole movie away. Watch it again, with fresh eyes, and enjoy the ride.

For me Phantom Menace is actually easily the GOAT, I absolutely cannot understand the criticism of the prequel trilogy, I even think it's better than the original trilogy. And besides, I actually really like the acting performances of Jake Lloyd, Hayden Christensen, Jar Jar Binks. Rating: original trilogy 5/5, prequel trilogy 6/5 (it's just perfect). (It's really perplexing/disturbing that my most favorite movies and actors were so hated.)

The Phantom Menace is a nice start to the prequel trilogy. Although not quite as good as the original Star Wars, it's still a great introduction to the franchise. It being the first chronologically and it's young “protagonist” make it an especially great entry point for kids.

A good start to the prequel trilogy. The pace is a bit slow, getting to know the characters and the world. Some humorous elements were not needed (I'm looking at you Jar-Jar), but it's good. The scale of the world is definitely larger than in the original trilogy, the politic of the world is shown, which is interesting.

Episode 1 is plagued with horrible decision making, offensive stereotypes, bad story pacing, and some questionable performance from good actors all goes hand in hand to make episode 1 in the bottom 3 of the series. Duel of the Fates is a great part of the soundtrack but the fights are way too choreographed that it takes away from the story beat its presenting.

Prequels are the best of Star Wars in general. This is what Lucas wanted his universe to be, and his ideas for Prequels made Star Wars absolutely great.Music has never been so good, lightsaber fights have a choreography, so it's now really impressive. And these movies tell a greek tragedy that's so beautiful.

So, what's my problem with this movie? probably is I just watched the original trilogy and it was amazing and fun and nu I watched this one and I was bored out of my **** is hard having characters who are proposed to hold their emotions back because the problem is you can very well end up with a cast where the only emotional one is Jar Jar pinks that is I mean he's fine. He's a comic relief but it's just so dry this movie. It's so dry to watch.Only part where my pulse finally went up where I finally felt something was in the last 15 minutes when the good score finally boots up the action scenes pull up in all directions. I finally feel some oh my God stuff is happening and I was happy and contempt for the last 15 minutes of this one all the other parts of the movie was boring as f***.I could not get immersed in this one mostly because that 3D was jowing most of the time in a way that poppets and fake customs are not. it's just filled like jar jar Binks was in a different world than everyone character on the screen , I think they made this movie too early , com to that 3D **** worst a movie can be for me is borrowing this one was too much of that sadly. I was hoping for an adventure star was movie and what I got was Jedi sitting in chairs and being boring.

First off I can't stand Jake Lloyd, so after repeated viewings my rating has drastically changed. Secondly the Midichlorian explanation for the force destroys much of the mythological chosen one destiny stuff.

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace takes place in a galaxy far, far away, before the original trilogy. The Galactic republic is in dismay due to political tension. Jedi Knights Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi are sent to negotiate with the Trade Federation, which is blockading the planet of Naboo. As they attain a better assessment of the situation, they determine that there is a dark force to compete with, which will ultimately lead to the “birth” of Anakin Skywalker, who shapes the galaxy’s future. The Phantom Menace had returned the limelight to the Star Wars franchise after the nearly twenty-year hiatus that had taken place after the end of the first trilogy. Under the same director, George Lucas, the film had enormous expectations to meet, as it would have to recapture the magic of the original trilogy all while introducing a past generation of characters and telling their stories. As an avid fan of Star Wars and one who truly appreciates the sequels, I had done my best to rewatch the film critically, while still acknowledging the love I have for it. Beginning with the strengths of the film, its visual effects were well ahead of its time. Lucas’ use of CGI was revolutionary. Unlike ever before, new landscapes, alien worlds, and stunning battles in space all while allowing for the creation of iconic characters, like that of Darth Maul. In particular, I turn to the pod race on Tatooine as evidence of the film's visual expertise. Casting Liam Neeson, as Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn was a phenomenal choice. Neeson’s commanding presence and sense of wisdom felt appropriate and added depth to his character. Additionally, his dynamic with Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) had added another dimension to the film and its story. Their dynamic is arguably what had made Darth Maul the menacing and captivating villain that he was. John Williams’ iconic score had brought back the nostalgia of the first trilogy all while allowing the viewer to hear the scene's emotions. The familiar sounds had complemented the visual spectacles and brought life to the film. The Phantom Menace is not without its weaknesses. The film struggles as we reach the middle act due to its intense political focus. While these help in staging the scene for the upcoming story, they detract from the action that most are waiting for and thus should’ve been slimmed down and placed in the background. As with many films of the Star Wars franchise, the dialogue and acting in certain scenes left much to be desired. For instance, Young Anakin (Jake Llyod) appeared to struggle with showing emotion in his lines and Queen Amidala (Natalie Portman) appeared to be overly focused on formality, making it difficult to interpret her emotions. Of the more polarizing elements of the film was the inclusion of Jar Jar Binks, a CGI character, the films source of farce. While he was a great showing of the films CGI capacity, and had been included as a form of comedic relief, many thought he detracted from the film and had spoiled the emotion. In terms of its relationship to the rest of the franchise, The Phantom Menace is the first installment of the prequel trilogy, and sets the stage for the following films, expanding upon the story of Star Wars, introducing new landscapes, characters, and relationships. That being said, many believe it does not live up to the expectations set by the original trilogy. As for its appeal to audiences, The Phantom Menace caters to both fans of the prequels and those looking for an exciting sci-fi adventure. Despite its many flaws, The film's action, suspense, and overall narrative make it a necessary part of the franchise and thus it brings in all audiences. When looking at the full scope of the Star Wars saga, The Phantom Menace is crucial in laying the groundwork that bridges the gap to the prequels. While it struggles with pacing and dialog, it more than makes up for it in visual effects, music, and the introduction of new and exciting characters. Thus, it earns a well above-average score.

You know, after watching all of the Star Wars movies, and I mean All of them. The Phantom Menace isn't bad at all. I know there will be a lot of Star Wars Fans that will disagree, I understand, Jar Jar Binks is an Unlikable character, and I understand that 2/3 parts of this film are just talking, with little to no progression on what is going on. But I have to say I think George Knew what he was doing with these films, especially this one, this is the laid-back Star Wars Film that is more of an Introduction(A long 2-hour introduction) to the Skywalker Saga. It shows off locals, characters, and the new CGI(for its time) to introduce the audience into a galaxy far far away. Is this the best Star Wars film? NO. Is this a Good Star Wars Film? Still No. So why in the de wanna wanga do I rate this highly, its because when you watch this for the first time it's pretty bad, but when you watch it again it gets better somehow, You watch it one more time and you realise what George did was something completely unforeseen by the Jedi *cough, the Audience. What we gained from this movie wasn't only The Pod Racing Scene, the Darth Maul Fight and Duel of the Fates, it was the most powerful thing in the universe more powerful than the force. MEMES 7/10, As far as I understand I enjoyed this film, it is different to the later Trilogy, but it is good different. It's better to embrace this film, skip 2/3 of this movie and head on over to the pod racing scene, and skip again to the Darth Maul fight. Still to this day, we don't have anything like it outside the first 3 episodic movies. And no The Last Jedi, While "The Rey feat. Kylo fight" was enjoyable there are noticeable flaws, it's Child's play compared to this. The soundtrack, the risk, and the overall flow of this scene are just glorious. In fact, all the scenes in this film were executed fine, it's just that most of it was boring. Clone Wars Review, I must.
