A Chilling Psychological Thriller of Trauma and Evolution Connecting Cinematic Universes.170228 in theaters (2.5)Broken are the more evolved. Watching this again after seeing "Unbreakable," the various hints and foreshadowing finally make complete sense. James McAvoy was impressive, showcasing 23 distinct personalities (even if only a few were actually shown) with just a bare shaved head and no heavy makeup. However, rather than the multiple personalities, I found Casey's hunting instincts far more intriguing. She will undoubtedly grow into a truly capable hunter. Directed by M. Night Shyamalan, the 2016 psychological horror thriller "Split" serves as a stealth standalone sequel to Shyamalan's 2000 film "Unbreakable." The story follows Kevin Wendell Crumb (James McAvoy), a man suffering from severe dissociative identity disorder with 23 distinct alter egos managed under the care of his psychiatrist, Dr. Karen Fletcher (Betty Buckley). When an emergent, sinister faction among his alters abducts three teenage girls—led by the observant and traumatized Casey Cooke (Anya Taylor-Joy)—they are held captive in an underground maintenance facility beneath the Philadelphia Zoo in preparation for the awakening of a superhuman 24th personality known as the Beast. As Casey relies on survival instincts learned from her difficult childhood, the narrative builds intense psychological suspense, blending sharp character work with unexpected mythic lore that boldly expands Shyamalan's cinematic universe.

The psychology themes explored are interesting and the protagonist’s characterization, together with that of the psychotherapist, stands out as one of the film’s strongest assets. It’s a movie that pulls you in and leaves you with open questions about the remarkable flexibility of the human brain. One thing is certain, identification is a process that can also lead to negative and even tragic outcomes. The screenplay, set design and staging are all well done. The only shortcomings are, first of all, that the film has some weak spots in its plot, such as the minimal attention given to the investigation into the missing girls and, secondly, it didn’t keep me in suspense, I didn’t feel any anxiety or fear. I see it more as a somewhat sci-fi-tinged exploration of dissociative identity disorder.

Split (2016) is an average film. It was very slow at building the characters characters. Kevin's multiple personality disorder was portrayed greatly. The supernatural twist was a little too much for the storyline.

This movie is very entertaining and has us wondering about the true nature of the character James Mccavoy portrays. He plays an amazing character with split personalities and has us wondering who he is now. Sometimes we can't help but fear for him or empathize for him or be concerned for him. This movie will have viewers having mixed feelings by how well James McCavoy portrays this psychotic character. Anya Taylor Joy's performance as the main character is amazingly done and helps us fear for her well being throughout the film.

M. Night Shyamalan's latest film, Split, marks his return to smaller budget, tighter stories after a period of less successful films. The movie centers around a mysterious and unpredictable antagonist with 23 personalities, held captive in a bunker with a group of young girls. The film effectively creates a sense of danger and claustrophobia by alternating between the bunker and the offices of the girls' therapist. James McAvoy gives a standout performance as the captor, Kevin, showcasing his ability to convey different states of mind. The plot is a typical thriller, with moments of good thought and compelling scenes. However, the final act falls short, shifting towards a superhero theme and leaving some plot points unresolved. Overall, Split is a return to form for Shyamalan and sets up potential for more in this saga, with McAvoy's performance being a highlight.

THE GOOD: James McAvoy's range in Split is amazing. I won't forget some of his face expressions. Shyamalan does a good job building suspense and placing the camera on the right spots. Also nice pacing and score. THE BAD: Some characters are worse developed than others and the screenplay sometimes falls short.

It's a good horror movie but is a little boring at times. It definitely has some strong moments though.

I enjoyed the movie a lot, I have seen it 2 times, last time I saw the entire Unbreakable trilogy one after the other. I would say it's the weakest of them just because I don't really like scary movies. James McAvoy played the characters perfectly, not only he changed his voice, pattern of speech, body posture and face expression altogether with walking "animations"

This movie is along with "The Sixth Sense" my favourite by Shyamalan so far. Everything works in this movie from the directing to the fantastic acting by Anya Taylor Joy and James McAvoy. The movie is scary and entertaining with a good balance between horror, family drama and psychological thrilling. This truly is a great one by Shyamalan.

Some might not like this movie very much, and I would be able to see why, but I think that the phenomenal acting of James McAvoy fixes everything.

This movie is great comeback for M. Night Shyamalan in superhero and suspense genre. This movie showed us different kind of superhero l suspense drama. After the introduction of main character, you can tell that something isn't right but the suspense keeps on building and you can't tell what is happening until it is revealed. The most surprising thing about this film is how naturally suspense, drama and horror are blended together. Nothing really felt forced or unnatural in acting, pace, or action. The only thing which I didn't like in this movie was that the climax was not that much appealing. Also movie looked little bit streched. It could have been shortened by around 10-15 minutes easily. Overall, this movie should be given a try. This may prove good experience for you.

Clearly M. Night Shyamalan best movie since the Sixth Sense. A chilling and tense movie lead by James McAvoy's brilliant turn in the lead role.

Split succeeds almost only because of James McAvoy's amazing performance, but fails in term of writing and directing, which is plagued by M. Night Shyamalan's usual overwriting and distractingly inhuman feel.

I was impressed by James McAvoy's ultra performance as a person with dissociative identity disorder and his ability to quickly change from one personality to another at a click of two fingers but I was largely unimpressed by director Shyamalan's slow-paced first 90 minutes in Split where nothing really happens. TN.

Excellent concept marred by a poor screenplay. It felt like the direction was 'set everything to 10 please' and so it all feels quite hammy and 'b' movie esque. I really enjoyed mcevoys acting esp when performing as dennis, henrich, and barry', but most of the 'personailties' came across as 'out there' accent choices and fell flat for me. Overall I was disappointed with the screenplay and but the editing and production are excellent so what you are seeing is high quality. Looked great in 4kHDR also. Shyamalan fans will get more out of this one for sure!

The most disturbing example of mind games. The lives of three girls depend of which of 27 multiple personalities is the safest or the less dangerous. Nail-biting till last minute.

The story partly works, it has some plot and character errors, some odd choices for scenes, but a good perspective on mental health. The visuals are standard, not really outstanding.

This comes across as a controversial statement to many, but I truly believe that Split is Shyamalan’s best film. The most obvious praise you can give this movie is for McAvoy’s performance, and... yeah. He’s amazing. He delivers a performance that’s expressive and entertaining enough to appeal to casual viewers, but also has enough nuance and depth to be a legitimate contender for an Academy Award (much like Heath Ledger’s performance as the Joker). Actually, the same could be said for the whole movie. We all know how far downhill M. Night’s career went, but Split proves that this man does have considerable talent as a writer-director.

This is easily the worst movie I've ever seen. First of all, I will say that the movie was more or less acceptable, but after the guy becomes the beast, all the realism that the movie had lost it! And why does it become a monster? Does the movie need one? They do not explain how he has supernatural powers or anything! It could have been a 5 or 6, but this is unacceptable. Also the guy is very annoying. Surprisingly I didn't give it a zero. Modern times is a thousand times better than this pile of ****

Split is beyond criminally underrated by critics. The acting is fantastic, McAvoy gives a performance very few could match. The plot keeps you interested and captured from start to finish. This is M. Night at the top of his game and it shows just how good he can be when everyone at this point had essentially written him off.

The fact that James McAvoy wasnt nominated for an Oscar for this performance is exactly why you can take the academy's word for anything. Great acting, good plot and an amazing twist

So this movie is truly Shyamalan returning to what he does best like in the early 2000’s when he was thought to be the next Speilberg. But a string of terrible movies like The Last Airbender derailed those thoughts. Now, it feels like he has finally listened to the fans who said that they want to see him do his old stuff, which in this case is thrillers that are suspenseful. This film engages you from the start and you are **** in to the plot and story. McAvoy shines in this movie and brings it to a whole new level with his performance, he really brings these different personalities to life. All of these personalities feel like a totally different character each time you see them and that is very difficult for an actor to do. The character of Kevin is played close to perfection by McAvoy, please put this man in the Oscar conversation for 2017! Split is truly M. Knight Shyamalan returning to form and delivered on a very suspenseful movie that has you on the edge of your seat. This movie has a great performance by James McAvoy who steals the show in one of his best performances. I will say that if you aren’t really into thrillers or certain aspects of Shyamalan films you won’t really be a fan of this movie. But, if you were a fan of his early work you will be pleasantly surprised and excited to see him returning to what he does best.

I don't think McAvoy's acting is brilliant. In fact, I think it's a mediocre performance. His character represents a kind of acting exercise you might give budding thespians. Take a handful of wildly different people and make them distinct. On that level, McAvoy does just fine. But that's an acting exercise. A movie character, a good one anyway, needs more.

Although overall a decent film, audiences is generally praise the movie due to the superb acting of James McAvoy as Kevin "The Hoard" Crumb. One can find many flaws in the movie that are very noticeable if McAvoy didn't steal the show. The one aspect I find irritative is that Casey Cooke seems to be some kind of Mary Sue, who is able to figure out and take of advantage of Kevin's disorder much quicker than her peers.

It's creepy but it's not like any other horror movies. McAvoy did the best acting that was needed. There are parts that I didn't like but manageable. I think it was brilliant to use the same theme from Unbreakable.

We felt the film had a lot of good ideas that kept in the realm of possibility, then tipped the scales. But touching on James McAvoy's performance -- if McAvoy happened to have died of a drug overdose shortly after filming, the community would have called this his crowning achievement to film and lauded the man as a genius... as it stands, people just sort of like the movie. Funny how art is...

Split is a great thriller in which James McAvoy is just downright incredible. It's a wild ride that ends with the twist that connects it to Unbreakable, and sets up Glass. I think this one is the best of the trilogy.

A great performance by McAvoy cannot lift this material to what it should have been. The story amounts simply to mind over matter, which would make this Shyamalanic world full of people with powers, not just a few. Wards are full of people with delusions of power based fantasies, and in this **** world they would be correct. I found the psychologist's logic to be usual Hollywood technobabble and her pretense of helping was **** when she refuted the possibility that a particular personality could exist. There are a few plot holes as well, but they were just a convience to keep the story moving, and are easily overlooked. Some called this a superhero movie. It is not.

James McAvoy can show that he knows how to interpret personalities in a unique way, with a high quality. The film is complicated in some points of the story, failing to explore more the universe that was presented, being only focused (most of the time) in the presentation of its main character. Despite not exploring other avenues, Kevin manages to overcome Elijah and David easily. The curiosity to see the classic "Unbrekable" join with "Split" is big, however, for it to be a good junction, one needs to study each of the films with a great subtlety. 8.3/10
