Garris wrote the screenplay himself and adds one significant improvement over the original short: changing the date of the story from 2001 to 1969.

Let me start off by saying that I love Stephen King, he's given me hours of entertainment and for that I am grateful. I am also a big fan of the lead in this movie Jonathan Jackson. Together I was expecting a can't miss movie, but it didn't quite work out that way. Riding The Bullet is just all around dull. The story was weak to begin with, the flashbacks were dull, the characters have 0 personality, and it just wasn't creepy in the slightest! If Disney made horror movies, they would be similar to this. I probably rated it higher than I should have because of my fondness for King and Jackson, but really this movie was a bore, don't waste your time.

Riding the Bullet is not the best thriller based on the novel by Stephen King. For the most part, the film is secondary, suspense in the film to a minimum, the story does not catch at all and the ending does not answer questions at all. Only ardent King fans can be advised to watch.

Both the anticipation factor and writer-director Mick Garris' slick adaptation fail to live up to the old hype.

Imagine a feature-length version of the "Large Marge" sequence from "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" and you won't be too far off, only that was scarier.

Writer-director Mick Garris has a real feeling for the horror master's melancholy worldview - love is loss - but he's too reverent toward the original story, the ending of which, both on the page and, now, on the screen, lands with an overly elegiac thud.
30
A ponderous, incoherent horror mishmash that turns King's short story into utter nonsense.

The movie is so glum and flat-footed there's no reason to care.

While I haven't read Stephen King' s original story, I imagine that it can't be much worse than the movie. The acting was average at best, the movie didn't make any sense, it was boring and the ending has got to be one of the worst I've seen in a while. At least David Arquette was quite entertaining to watch.
