The movie they made is the movie they made, and while there are some genuinely moving moments, and filmmakers Josh Tickell and Rebecca Tickell clearly took great care in respecting Indigenous People culture and getting the details right, too much of On Sacred Ground focuses on William Mapother’s cliché-riddled Daniel.

The movie is sensible enough to feature Native American characters and actors and give them some space, but they’re never made a protagonist in their own story.

“On Sacred Ground” directed by the talented filmmakers Josh and Rebecca Tickell distinguishes between the opposite sides of the Dakota Access Pipeline. The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe faces tragedy when their water and land is compromised by the oil companies pipeline. The Sioux tribe is represented with respect even though they are receiving derision from the other side. David Arquette and William Mapother play the two male leads who represent both sides of this story. William Mapother’s character Daniel is perceived as an Army veteran with PTSD, he has a struggling home life and not much going for him. This story could help him become something more when the opportunity of revealing honesty prevails itself. The cognitive dissonance he faces brings his morality to light giving him potential. Many thought-provoking issues are brought up in this film like, indigenous rights, protection of the environment and so much more. This motion picture deserves success, I would strongly recommend giving it a watch.

‘On Sacred Ground’ by Josh and Rebecca Tickell is a multifaceted story that highlights the 2016 Dakota Access Pipeline conflict while telling the story from a unique perspective. Daniel McKinney, played by William Mapother is a veteran reporter suffering from PTSD that now works freelance as a civilian. His status as a low-income Republican veteran leads him to be profiled and recruited by a conservative newspaper to write about the Dakota Access Pipeline and the conflict surrounding it. I felt like I was accompanying Daniel on his journey to find the truth and his own emotional healing. Daniel’s arc throughout this movie is incredibly well-written.

The result is a movie that is not merely disappointingly uneven, but irredeemably unbalanced.

In narrative portrayals of real events, the acting is crucial to the authenticity perceived by viewers. William Mapother’s performance was both emotional and subjective. He portrayed a tortured ex-army journalist who’s moral conflict feels genuine and engaging. Kerry Knuppe is absolutely captivating. She portrays a woman who has sacrificed everything for her people and will continue fighting the hegemony to protect what she loves. Josh and Rebecca Tickell have masterfully written compelling three-dimensional characters who ultimately drive the story home. I think this is definitely a must watch film.
