If May December were less self-aware, it might belong in the category of camp or failed melodrama; if it were less earnest, it might earn the title of tongue-in-cheek satire. But ultimately, the movie’s discordant aesthetic isn’t coy. It’s about revealing the nightmarish circus that Joe has survived with quiet resilience.

May December feels like a return to Haynes’s outre origins, a stylish character study that, when inspected closer, may actually have an entire culture—its art, its sexual mores—on its nimble mind.

Any five audience members might have five different takeaways, which tells you there is a lot going on here. I was left with this thought: How well do we really know anyone, even ourselves?

With Samy Burch’s razor-sharp script providing some fantastically flourishing dialogue passages, frequent Haynes collaborator Julianne Moore delivering the latest in a long line of magnificently calibrated and memorable performances, and Moore’s fellow Oscar winner Natalie Portman turning in equally layered work, this is an intricately crafted study of people who are experts at putting on facades and all too skilled in the art of deception.

Surface-level funny but with a well of deeper meaning brewing, May December is not just a skilful satire of suburban propriety; it’s a unique and uncanny affair about the nature of performance itself.

Although not on the same level as Haynes’ best movie (2015’s Carol), this one highlights the director’s ability to explore complex and dysfunctional human relationships with insight and intelligence.

At times, May December feels like an interrogation of the elusive nature of truth.

Forget the awards buzz, just watch this because it’s an incredibly entertaining film.

Após a excelente experiência com "Carol", confesso que fui com muita sede ao pote para conferir esse novo trabalho do Todd Haynes, e confesso que esperava bem mais. Não que o filme seja ruim, o elenco consegue dar conta do recado muito bem, e seu início é precioso. Aliás, ponto para a sonoplastia da obra, que consegue criar e pontuar cenas interessantes, por mais que algumas soem gratuitas ("vai precisar de mais salsicha", com uma câmera que vai focando em tom de suspense no rosto da Julianne Moore). Ter a Moore e a Portman protagonizando é de uma tensão sexual absurda, e o filme mostra a Portman como uma atriz querendo se aproximar da Moore, como laboratório para seu novo papel no cinema. É super interessante e muito feliz a escolha do roteiro em narrar uma história de construção, de entendimento de uma sobre a outra, e o tal escândalo que ocorrera anos atrás (do qual nem é tão secreto assim como sugere o título brasileiro). Mas aí, dado o start inicial, o roteiro não sabe o que fazer como material. Vemos as meninas perdidas, e pra completar o Charles Melton está ótimo na figura do marido que sofrera as consequências do tal "escândalo", bem traumatizado, roubando a cena no terço final. Perdido, o filme vai tentar captar o que há de melhor do elenco, coo em monólogos, olhares, ou em cenas feitas perfeitamente para demonstrar o potencial estelar que o Haynes tem à sua disposição (a cena da Portman revisitando o depósito onde o fato ocorrera há anos atrás é sublime, pena que muito curta e bem pouco ousada para a proposta). Apostando numa sensibilidade maior do que pôde captar e num movimento intimista cujos diálogos sempre ficam atrás, é um filme bonito, tocante, mas que nunca entrega aquilo que promete. É sugestivo, claro, em vários planos, e é uma delícia ver a entrega da produção em criar um ambiente convincente pra trama, por mais que ela tenho vários tropeços para se desenvolver. Ao final, é o Charles Melton que pode ser parabenizado por se sobrepor às duas. A metáfora com a mariposa poderia ser melhor até, mas é aquilo: dando conta das deficiências, o filme vai gritar por qualquer espécie de lirismo em suas passagens. Boa tentativa, mas nada que salve o filme de ser somente mediano.

Let's say, this movie is not my type. Because it was considerably hard to finish the movie. Acting, of course, is undeniably good, but the story is just dull. The idea is ethically conflicting, but the process... Boring.

Another movie made by persons whose only reality is other movies and what's on TV. Todd Haynes, years ago, exhausted his semiotics degree on "Safe", and Bunuel had already done that movie with far more wit, mystery and indirection in the 1960s. Literary imagination slunk out of the building, carrying an Aeropress and a cardboard box.....
