A lively, well-made schlock thriller that will doubtlessly be forgotten in two weeks, but in the meantime should provide a few pleasant evenings for fans of the genre.

Un film d’horreur nanaresque qui va chercher ses inspirations à droite et à gauche : un peu d’Alien, beaucoup de The Thing et une pincée des Dents de la Mer… Sorti quasiment en même temps qu’un certain Abyss, on a cru que le film de Cameron était… lui aussi un truc horrifique alors qu’il s’agissait d’un simple… machin (certes plaisant) avec des bisounours sous l’eau ! Dans ce Leviathan en tout cas, tous les poncifs du genre claustrophobique mutant sont présents et la plupart du temps assez bien exploités malgré des raccourcis et des maladresses… et un petit budget (nanaresque évidemment) qui limite certains effets. C’est néanmoins assez crade et assez… beurk, donnant un côté globalement crabeurk mais pas autant marqué que dans le film de Carpenter, heureusement ! La mise en scène reste classique, sans doute un peu trop et les comédiens ne sont pas forcément très convaincants malgré la présence du fort sympathique Peter Weller. Par ailleurs, le film peine un peu à démarrer tandis que l’ensemble reste quand même souvent prévisible… Quoi qu’il en soit, Leviathan reste tout à fait regardable et a encore ses bons moments… même aujourd’hui !

Because Cosmatos has put together a decent cast and a proficient crew, Leviathan is intermittently interesting, but it's a bad sign that the movie starts losing its punch when the monster shows up.
