Based on a true story and anchored by a superb lead performance from Fernanda Torres, I’m still Here is a moving and powerful piece of drama with a message that remains as apt now as it was in the 1970’s.

Su protagonista sostiene con dignidad una historia dolorosa, mientras el guion, sin exagerar, logra ser políticamente claro y profundamente humano. Unfortunately, it didn't impact me as much as I wished. There's nothing offensive about the content or the aesthetics (just the cheesy and corny use of the original soundtrack to evoke obvious feelings that would have been much more powerful without the music), nothing that I could point out as bad or technically incompetent. But at the same time, it didn't show anything memorable or noteworthy. The setting of the story is so aestheticized it comes close to a nostalgic recreation of a Kodachrome atmosphere, with references to Brazilian cultural practices and objects from the 1970s. The reason for this aesthetic approach is obvious: it aims to create a contrast between the upper-middle-class life of the Paiva family, ‘shielded’ from the horrors of the military dictatorship due to their socioeconomic position, and the eventual darkness and filth that is revealed after the arrest and disappearance of the patriarch. In the first part of the film, we have an almost nostalgic vision of the 1970s: for part of the upper-middle class of Rio, the dictatorship seemed distant, just armed officers walking down the street while their families go on living their normal lives, enjoying the beach and the heat. The danger seemed distant, invisible, only affecting others. Here we have an almost idyllic portrait of childhood, youth, and family. Bad things happen, but the fear is out there, in the streets, on the television screen. With the invasion of the house, we lose the security of home. With Rubens' disappearance due to subversive dissent, we are confronted with the cruel and violent world of what happens behind the scenes of an authoritarian government, creating a contrast between the false security of a sheltered fantasy and the harsh reality of the facts, transforming the film into an exercise in reflective nostalgia: the idyllic memory is destroyed to make way for repressive horror. But this contrast doesn't go far enough. The interrogation and confinement scenes remain on the fringes of what is acceptable, palatable, a violence (even if only implied) that avoids shocking as much as it should. Maybe it's my fault for being too desensitized, and the general public might feel the impact caused by these moments. But in my opinion, there was a lack of subversiveness to create something truly uncomfortable and visceral when dealing with the horrors of the dictatorship. I was inevitably reminded of shocking scenes from other Brazilian films that deal with torture and repression, either explicitly set during the military coup or using historical subterfuges to talk about the (then) current regime, based on the remediation of past events. The Case of the Naves Brothers immediately came to mind, as did Lucio Flavio: two films whose moments of military/police violence stand out and create a feeling of visceral discomfort, unlike the case of I’m Still Here, whose discomfort comes more from the idea than from the guts. Avoiding going beyond common sense, the discourse of I'm Still Here is one of light politicization, an obvious, palatable criticism. It is an exercise in memory that is necessary at a political moment in which common sense unfortunately no longer seems to be so common. Its politicizing and awareness-raising function is clear, and it seems to be doing its job well, being well-received by the public and gaining recognition abroad. I am happy with its achievements, but on a personal level it did not impact me. With its polished aesthetic and traditional, safe structure, it became just another film imprisoned by the shackles of a need for financial return and distribution in traditional, commercial circuits. I understand its importance and I understand why so many people were won over by it, but for me it did not stand out. It doesn’t rub enough salt into the wound, following a path of harmless criticism. Maybe watching it a second time will change my mind, but for now I see it simply as a competent film, but one that does not move me.

Greetings from Lithuania. Although i needed to Google it the short historical background of a things that were happening in Brasil in 1970 before watching "I'm Still Here" (2024), never would i thought that this movie is going to be this good, and its power will not in a political background. "I'm Still Here" (or "Ainda Estou Aqui") is a powerful story about strength of a family caught in a dire circumstances. I won't get into details about plot of this film, only will say that it is based on a very true story. As much as i enjoyed Mikey Madison's raw, fun and brave performance in "Anora" last year, Fernanda Torres who plays the main role in "Ainda Estou Aqui" should have won Oscar for best performance - she is the heart and soul of this film. Its a great performance. This film at its running time 2 h 10 min was involving from the get to till the last scene. Directing by Walter Salles ("The Motorcycle Diaries") was excellent. Set design, music, cinematography were superb - this movie takes you to the specific time and place. Overall, "Ainda Estou Aqui" is an excellent film about the pure love of a family. One doesn't need to know the history of this country to appreciate this film, because it's told in universal language. Great movie.

A sad story that drags on. I’m not understanding how this was a film. That doesn’t lessen the outrage of the event being depicted, but this film left me cold.

‘Ainda Estou Aqui’ has a beautiful frankness that should put the film on the same tier as other masterful tellings of Latin America in the turbulent ’70s, but Salles’s tendency to let the specific details of the real-life story drive the narrative results in an uneven and sometimes anodyne experience.

Brazil, 1971, the country has been under a military dictatorship for five or six years. The new government is interested in turning back resistance. This is the story of a husband and wife and their older children through this point in history. The husband is taken for interrogation and the family doesn’t see him again. The wifeIs a very strong, unsentimental woman. Self-pity is not part of her DNA. Thus, what could’ve been a real tearjerker of a movie was not particularly.After the movie, I found myself reading about this period in Brazil’s history that spanned nearly two decades. Despite the repression, political and otherwise, it was a very productive growth period in Brazil’s economy. Overall, I enjoyed the movie with its focus on the wife’s pursuit of a law degree and for public recognition about what was done to her husband, a former Brazilian congressperson.

God almighty, why are all of the year's best films so damn depressing lmao. Between this, "The Brutalist" and "Nickel Boys," it'll be a freaking miracle if we all make it out awards season in one piece. Seriously, though, there's so much sadness to be found in this and the bulk of it isn't even spoken. It's all either communicated by circumstance or by one of the many (no joke) legitimately flawless performances on display here, half of which are from child actors, by the way. Cannot stress enough how much of things are held together by Fernanda Torres here, though. The ability to communicate so much emotion and anxiety without shredding the scenery is just a sight to behold. Also, the subject matter is just all too potent to not be affected by -- no matter where you hail from. What Walter Salles has done here is not only tremendously respectful, but brave. It's not your typical, flashy Hollywood biopic, but damn it if "I'm Still Here" isn't gonna be on my mind days from now.

Um filme incrível, ótimo trilha sonora, ótimas atuações inclusive viscerais. O triunfo do filme é ambientação bem reconstruida, pecou a essência da época que se prometa contar. E lembrando que é uma adaptação de um livro, e como adaptação é muito boa, como fato histórico é bom também, mas fica mais preso na situação da família no contexto histórico da ditadura, e isso é bem interessante pois não bota ditadura como protagonista, mas um coadjuvante.

First of all, this film exists for us (Brazilians). It was done with delicacy, humanity, respect for everything this family went through, without any self-pity. An emptiness and a silence that does not need to be spoken at any time, just felt. Film of the year.

What a movie, my friends. "I'm Still Here" is one of those films that is simple in its execution, but tells a compelling story. It captivates from start to finish, immersing us in a dark period in Brazilian history where people disappeared and families were destroyed as if they had no value. Walter Salles directs the film masterfully. Fernanda Torres is magnificent in her performance as Eunice Paiva, living up to the fact that she is the daughter of another great actress, her mother, Fernanda Montenegro. It doesn't surprise me that this film is double nominated in the Best Film and Best Foreign Language Film categories at this year's Oscars. Just as I'm not surprised that Fernanda won the Golden Globe for Best Actress and was nominated in the same category at the Oscars. It's brilliant. It touches our hearts, makes us emotional and deepens us about the importance of family and love between those we love. I recommend it to everyone.

Confesso que eu gosto de cinema explícito, que se abre ao mundo, despudorado. No entanto, a proposta do Walter Salles aqui, corretamente adaptado da obra do Marcelo Rubens Paiva, é fazer da Eunice Paiva, personagem vivido magistralmente pela Fernanda Torres, uma Fortaleza em suas emoções, durona, contida, mesmo com tantos motivos para desabar. Com isso, é um trabalho muito acima da média, seja do roteiro ou da atuação. No dia 20 de janeiro de 1971 essa família comum, alegre, com o primeiro terço do filme uma pintura , mostrando seu cotidiano e a humanidade que brota daquele lar, vera seu brilho apagar numa ação irreparável da ditadura militar. Como o patriarca da família era um ex-deputado do PTB, provavelmente com relações comunitárias com os considerados "subversivos", ele será mais um vítima de um sistema que deixa sequelas até hoje (e olha que tem muita gente que votou nas eleições de 2024 em quem elogia AI-5, por exemplo). É o Brasil que precisa sim reparar danos históricos e, principalmente, revisota-los, porque os mesmos erros já estão sendo cometidos no presente. A presença do fascismo é real. Mas ao optar por não se entregar ao melodrama fácil, a matriarca vai querer sorrir na foto feita ao jornal "Manchete" (tablóide da época), resiliente. É seu ato íntimo de resistência. Os filhos estão ali para mostrar o poder dos laços de parentesco, e de como a vida deve seguir, mesmo com uma dor incomensurável. Fernanda Torres está gigante. Fernanda Montenegro também entra em cena, e com o olhar expressa tudo e um pouco mais. É um filme para ver os fantasmas da nossa história, tão presentes hoje quanto há 50 anos atrás. With an unhurried pace, the diretor chooses to focus mostly on the family drama about the disappearance of a former congress man during the militar dictatorship in Brazil. More like a documentary. Not much excited about the screenplay.

The movie is great! Fernanda Torres delivered an Oscar-worthy performance, and she and the movie deserve an Oscar. The movie has beautiful photography, taking us back to Rio in the 1970s.Walter Sales brings a family history about how strong a woman can be, carrying her disgrace and not letting it interfere with her **** a time with fantastic Hollywood movies spending millions of dollars, we have a delightful movie to watch about real people, a real family that brings to today all the tragedies that family went through without its father. It is emotional, it is great, and worthy of your time and money. No fantastic CGI effects or AI; it's an old-school movie.
