Sinners7

It’s a slow-moving and predictable genre picture, perfectly entertaining. But to include it as a contender for Best Picture is absurd. How far the Oscars have fallen.

One Battle After Another7
Sep 28, 2025
Felt really flat and uninteresting. Did nothing for me. Bit of a leftist fever dream, which might explain the ludicrously positive reviews. I’m grateful for a quality effort, don’t get me wrong, but it’s all over the place.

The Naked Gun3

Absolutely abysmal writing, dreadful in every respect. Not even remotely as good as the original.

Jurassic World Rebirth3
Aug 7, 2025
Why show action or advance the story when you can have five minutes of bad dialogue? I’d have preferred a mute tour group who can only scream and point. Has Hollywood forgotten how to make a movie?

I'm Still Here6

A sad story that drags on. I’m not understanding how this was a film. That doesn’t lessen the outrage of the event being depicted, but this film left me cold.

Ludicrous plot twist on so many levels. A high-quality production but COME ON.

Babygirl4

This movie is a perfect illustration of how broken Hollywood has become. Critics celebrate an utterly silly, neurotic exercise that is an insult to the audience's intelligence. And Nicole Kidman's bizarre Frankensurgeries on her face are so off-putting -- what is going on here? What a waste of creative energy this movie is.

Solid, never boring. The moods and moments it creates are sometimes extraordinary. If you want to see a Marvel movie, don't go to this.

Loved it, especially because it doesn't engage in cheap story tropes or tricks. This is not Pretty Woman. This feels like real life. Absolutely worth your time. Go see it in a theatre and get off your phone.

Come on people, can we raise our standards a little? This movie is just warmed-up leftovers. Totally forgettable.

The Substance9
Oct 20, 2024
This movie is fearless, fascinating and memorable. It's biggie-sized my respect for Demi Moore (and Margaret Qualley). Talk about fearless, mad, real cinema. Also, I think this movie has a bigger impact on women than on men -- guys don't have a regular cycle or experience menopause, nor do we face the same overwhelming pressures to look amazing. So if you're female, get ready, this might hit you hard.

You critics have got to be kidding. This movie is a snooze, badly written and totally uninteresting. Must avoid, not must see.

How to Have Sex5

There is no truth captured in this movie that isn't better captured in various reality shows and documentaries that were made about British youth in similar holiday resorts. The movie is dull, aimless and boring.

Leave the World Behind9
Jan 8, 2024
I really enjoyed it. It toys with expectations more intelligently than people give it credit for, it's beautifully shot, the performances are excellent, and there are some fantastic effects shots. Maybe I liked it because I had no expectations but who cares -- it kept my attention for the full duration of the movie.

Saltburn6

Some interesting mood moments, but this film treats its characters like paper cutouts. If you don't create a plausible character, tearing him or her down later makes no impact on the viewer. I still don't understand what Farleigh was doing there. Pamela was a joke from beginning to end. And Oliver -- give me a break. Seriously Emerald, what the F were you doing with him? You could have made a cool movie here. Instead, it's YA nonsense.

Killers of the Flower Moon7
Nov 5, 2023
It's an interesting story but there are no surprises. The movie telegraphs where it is going from the start, then takes what feels like forever to get there. And the psychology of the DiCaprio character made no sense to me whatsoever. I would have preferred a Ken Burns documentary.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One6
Jul 16, 2023
Belief gets suspended so many times in this movie, you feel like I've ascended to the astral plane. This is an outrageously silly enterprise, with implausible physics, tech that might as well be magic, and a large cast of characters that are so interchangeable, they literally change faces. I'm all for fun at the movies, but this fever dream overdoses on cinematic meth. A day later, I can barely remember the plot, and don't even care.

The Quiet Girl10

A profound, delicate, beautiful film. I grew up in Ireland during the same era and it brought so much back. Incredibly accurate depiction of that time, down to the type of biscuit placed on the table. It may feel understated to some but if you know Ireland you'll be hit with hammer blow after hammer blow of recognition and feeling. I felt like I was back in time. It especially captures the Irish psychology and way of speaking. TBH I prefer it to Banshees of Inisherin.

Avatar: The Way of Water6
Jan 16, 2023
We all know the truth -- Avatar 2 is a fantastic tech demo but is otherwise dull, a rerun with a limp story that feels like warmed-up leftovers (including the villain). And Cameron keeps making the same movie: aliens, butch men, even butchier women, militarism and new age musings. Whatever, it's what you get when the director is a bossy little boy and everyone is indulging him. I wish he'd get over this farcical world he's created and make different movies!

Jackass Forever3
Apr 1, 2022
This is not a good movie. There's no edge, they mug for the camera too hard and most of the bits are dull, poorly executed and uninteresting. Also, the addition of a woman destroys the laddish vibe (scorpion botox?) -- this is not the movie for representation and identity politics, sorry. I got two-thirds of the way through it and turned it off. You want to say to the guys, give it a rest, do something else.

Don't Look Up4
Dec 26, 2021
What a mess. The new Netflix model has become socialism for movies. In the olden days, terrible movies bombed at the box office because moviegoers don't want to waste their money. But with Netflix, you're paying for everything with a flat fee, so there is no way for the marketplace to hold them to account. You're not going to cancel Netflix over a single movie, and they don't release objective viewership data, so now, everything is wonderful. It's a great deal for the actors, Netflix props up its share price, and our culture suffers death by mediocrity. Because this movie is self-indulgent dreck.

Dune: Part One7
Oct 22, 2021
Old timer here. Dune 2021 is Dune 1984 plus a ton of production design. That’s it. I found it to be flat and drawn out, with weaker performances. Whatever. If you like it, great. But it’s no Second Coming.

This movie is hypnotic. To be sure, you have to be in the right mood to watch it, but don’t pass it up or dismiss it. I’m still thinking about it. The imagery, the music, the emotion — wow.

The Personal History of David Copperfield4

Overly mannered and self-aware. Some clever staging early on but as the mugging to the camera builds, so does the viewer’s annoyance.

Tedious nothingness. Pure dial tone. Stare at a wall and you’ll be more entertained and receive more insight. And of course the woke outlets LOVED it. Fertile subject matter, but this just isn’t cinema.

Absorbing portrait of a legendary but tragic figure. You don’t have to love soccer to appreciate the arc of this man’s life. Another exceptional documentary from Asif Kapadia.

Oct 6, 2019
Predictable, dull, seen it a million times before. Everything is telegraphed a million miles in advance, and the characters don't behave like real people. We could have had fun here, played around with expectations. Instead it's just empty and uninteresting. Maybe it will scare some frail, unsocialized millennials.

Halloween4
Oct 28, 2018
Unsophisticated and totally absurd. I adore Jamie Lee Curtis but the movie's premise is just silly and some of the twists are so outlandish I burst out laughing. This film is a naked money-making device, nothing more. I'm happy to line Curtis's pockets because she is a good thing in this nasty world, but I can't recommend this dreadful farce. Watch Halloween II instead -- at least it had some of the original's energy.

Dunkirk7
Jul 28, 2017
Not understanding why there is so much praise for what is at best a pretty middling war movie. My biggest complaint is that it doesn't do a good job of portraying the true scale of the evacuation. I think there's something wrong with film criticism right now. We're so grateful for anything that approaches half-way decent that we lose all perspective. Dunkirk is perfectly okay entertainment but nothing more.

Baby Driver6
Jul 4, 2017
Kind of flabbergasted at the critical praise this cliche-ridden, unexceptional movie has received. "Hot Fuzz" had a million tons more heart, brains and fun than this film. "True Romance" did it better. If "Baby" is great, Hollywood is dead.

Conventional, uninteresting, basic genre picture. People have forgotten how good movies used to be. Ignore this film and rent Peter Jackson's version or even the 1978 De Laurentiis film.

Gay guy here -- this movie did nothing for me. I found it dull and simple. The curse of gay cinema strikes again. Don't bother watching it, reading the Sears catalogue is more interesting.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story3

Self-important, cliched tripe. No personality or character. Feels like it was made in committee. I am truly astonished that so many critics liked it. Instantly forgettable with characters I couldn't care less about. Stop making these terrible movies, Disney!

Jul 12, 2013
Dull, noisy, clichéd. I'm shocked that Del Toro had anything to do with this. I know fanboys eat this adolescent stuff with a spoon, but if you're looking for anything innovative and inspired, do not see this movie. Just terrible.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter8

Didn't have high expectations (got dragged to it by a friend) but I really enjoyed the movie. Some gorgeous visuals, occasionally inventive use of 3D, and a fun overall concept. Above all I was not BORED, which is hard to say about most other movies. This is not a bad film, no matter what some people say. And I loathe fanboy crap.

Ultrasuede: In Search of Halston0
Jun 10, 2012
Lazy, self-indulgent nonsense. I really can't think of a worse documentary. You or I with no preparation and a Flipcam could do a more profound job. Halston was a fashion designer who really did deserve a proper documentary. This dolt Smith just clowns around in front of the camera. He should be ashamed of himself.
