This horror comedy is loaded with decapitations, bodies torn in two and spewing blood, and yet, unlike the grim, torture-filled gore-fests of late, Hatchet’s mayhem is so giddily over-the-top that you end up applauding the low-budget aplomb of it all.

Austin Chronicle
No other film in recent memory has featured such a terrifically retro maniac or revisited the heyday of Eighties gore films with such gleeful, moist abandon.

This film is charming and something new in horror movies, is not the same like others movies. Is scary with a strong plot and excellent performances in this film.

Honestly, I thought it would be scarier, but unlike any slasher films, Hatchet delivers a funny creepy time, with great gore, and interesting story, although the characters make stupid decisions sometimes, and the movie doesn't takes it self seriously, it is still good and powerful!

This is not a film intended for a wide audience. But B-movie fans who find their way to Adam Green's gory schlock extravaganza are going to like it.

Horror without suspense is like sex without love: you can appreciate the technicalities, but ultimately there’s no reason to care.

New York Post
Director Adam Green's genuine affection for the genre helps make Hatchet a cut above average.

Hatchet is further evidence of the decline of Western civilization.

Even after appropriately lowering expectations, it's kind to call this one a cut below.

Hatchet is entertaining at best. But, apart from the surprisingly great practical effects and the gory killings, the movie is not really interesting and it was predictable.I understand that it was an homage to older slasher movies but, it just wasn't that good.

I'll break this review down into the good, the bad and the gory. I'll start with the gory. This film is very gory. It is gruesome. Now for the bad. There is nothing new here at all. It is a slasher movie lacking originality. It has humour and I don't remember good slashers being filled with humour as they would be a comedy. There is no suspense. Now for the good. It is a traditional slasher with no modern irony thrown in. The humour made me laugh once or twice. The gore is shocking. I jumped once or twice. Overall this is quite a good retrospective tribute to eighties slashers and that is its strongest point. I want a new film that either has an awesome scary atmosphere and tension or a film that leaves your mind scarred with fear for weeks to come. This was neither but a fun ride nonetheless. In retrospect I actually think that I really enjoyed this. There was no point when I was bored, the characters were interesting if a little annoying and the action was relentless for the second half. A traditional slasher that scares and horrifies without anything new.

A buckets-of-blood gory horror film that is a lovely send up to the VHS era of trashy slashers. In no way good in the typical sense but the movie most certainly knows what it is - a campy, generally creepy, and downright **** hilarious slasher flick. A great villain is created out of Victor Crowley, and I'm tempted to watch the sequels.

The first and most important thing you need to know about this movie is it is incredibly stupid. However, the movie knows it and make fun of it's self. If you are a big gory horror movie fan then you might enjoy this one. There are some humorous deaths and a whole lot of gore. There are a whole bunch of problems with this movie two though. The acting is pretty weak through much of the movie, and the whole story and plot are kind of stupid. Overall if you enjoy bad horror movies and good gore then this movie is for you.

It's not a remake. It's not a sequel. And it's not based on a Japanese one.
