Adam Sandler is funny as the volatile hero, and the screenplay is just abrasive enough to keep the story surprising.

It may smell awful from a distance, especially if you have low tolerance for lowbrow humor, but up close this yarn about an unlikely golf star is fairly painless.

Tells the story of a violent sociopath. Since it's about golf, that makes it a comedy.

Doesn't deliver.

A way-below-par golfing comedy.

Added together, there are about three minutes of funny material in Happy Gilmore, and pretty much all of them are in the trailer, leaving a sometimes painfully unfunny 90 minutes with which to contend.

Gen Z critics don't understand, neither do Gen Z, movie came out in the 90's, a cult classic.

Sandler was popular on SNL. He went into the movie business, but was not well received. I like Sandler's movies. I think his characters are interesting and fun to watch. But Sandler in this movie is still young. Maybe he is immature. Instead of a fun performance, he is angry and fussy. This is not good. The script is also stupid. There are a number of things that shouldn't be in a movie. But we can see them not as flaws, but as good points. Sometimes stupidity is necessary. Who came up with the idea of Carl Weathers being injured by an alligator, or a person being injured by a falling air conditioner? After all, we all like Sandler's comedy, no matter how stupid it is. I'm not so sure about Sandler's performance in this film, though.

Happy Gilmore has a decent story and some good comedy, but its also cliched and cheesy time and time again. Its an average movie good for some laughs.

This one's a pain to the neck. There's only a few minutes of funniness and that's the entire clown scene and then everything managed to go down the drain before and after it. Users are paid to 'hate' on the critics when they are actually hating on themselves for hating on them... because on Metacritic, you're the critic. It used to be 'great' according to the people who keep on telling me this was Adam Sandler's only great film, but then I never actually found it funny after seeing it (except for the clown scene again) because it's Adam Sandler. I wanted to give this one an 8, but due to the fact he's terrible in acting right now and he should deserve better, this one went down to a 3. Hey, at least it's better than Jack and Jill and both the Grown Ups installments.

This one is funny at times, but nearly enough to make it truly worth your time. There are worse ways to spend 90 minutes, but there are also much better ways. At the end of the day, the plot is highly implausible, but the feel good aspect of it helps bringbthe film out of the gutter completely.
